Williams, 1993Hello everyone,
The sound on my STTNG is extremely crackly until the game warms up - then it is not too bad at all
Is that likely to be a capacitor issue, and if so is it the two big ones that should be changed (C20 and C21) or something else?
There seems to be a lot of capacitors on this board!

The DCS sound board has the two big power filter caps and 4 1uf pass through caps.
The big caps are snap-caps and not easily removed without ripping through holes.
But yes...I'd start by replacing them.

Please keep in mind this is Chris saying he would replace them, he's not necessarily saying to do this as replacing one of these without damaging your board is right up there in skill level as removing your RAM IC intact.

Sure. I remove those caps from every DCS board that I repair.
I don't think those two ceramic caps are causing the issue that you note.
But go ahead and cut them off. It can't hurt and it might help.

If you "wiggle" the two big caps, does it change the behavior?

I tried wiggling the big caps but it had no effect (and there was no observable play with them when I did so)
I'll try cutting off the small caps
The sound quality starts really bad - a noticeable hum when the gam is first turned on, and really crackly sound when a game is started - but it improves very quickly so that after a few games it could pass as close to normal

Hello Incomer,
I had exactly the same problem. The crackly sound got better after a while. In cold condition it was very bad.
I exchanged the U20 (AD1851N) , digital to analog converter chip. I also changed the caps C20,C21,C15,C18,C19,C32, C41 (1µF63V) and C52 100µF but they are not the reason for the crackly sound I guess. I just wanted to renew everything.
After my change it is fine and running since 7 years now without a problem.
When changing the big caps, I had the problem that the small connection through the hole of the pcb was also coming out. be sure to have electrical contact on both sides of the pcb.
