My Reproduction CPR Whirlwind Playfield is missing the slot for the shooter lane switch. Has anyone else this issue. Unfortunately, I did not notice it until the Playfield was mostly populated top and bottom. I am a little nervous to try a router - ideas?

Oh no! I feel your pain, man. I’m not a woodworker, but what I would do since you have a good portion populated is to find a buddy (or local Pinsider) who knows about woodworking to help. You need reinforcements. If that’s not an option, watch as many YouTube videos as you can and make sure you have the right tool for the job.

On a positive note, looking good so far. I’d recommend replacing the disc decals though or that will bug you later down the road. The repro ones are pretty good and will make it look brand new.

    Damn I miss my Whirlwind.

    #3 1 year ago

I have not rebuilt the discs yet so they will get new decals soon. The discs are in for fit purposes only. Most of the dimples are not correct so it is easier to fit everything with the harness off the Playfield.

Gotcha, sounds like you know what’s up. I remember the ball launch in particular being a pain to dial in when I did this swap to a CPR.

That’s good thinking - wonder if you still need the slot cut or if that tech is strong enough to work through the wood?

It should but it might need to get a little closer to the ball.

If you contact Sonic , Matt and Dan might be able to create something custom for you. My shadow has a switch on one of the ramps that actually mounts above the ball path and detects it from above.

wow, how fakin ridiculous is that. pathetic actually

I will contact sonic, this might be the cleanest solution. When you sell a game everyone always wants pictures of the shooter lane so I don’t want to dick up the lane with a router it I don’t have to.

I remembered seeing this issue in a restoration thread. The op in that thread shows his procedure for routing the slot. Hope that helps.

Let us know the playfield thickness where the ball will sit in the shooter lane. We can probably make a switch with enough sensitivity to detect the ball through the wood.

I would have to say that as a major mistake by CPR.

    #13 1 year ago

Looking at CPR Whirlwind pics on their website doesn't show it either.

I did the same thing on a swap I did for a friend. I had to remove a few pieces to make room for the router.

If the slot was missing on one, it was missing on every single one. I doubt the CNC burped on this one and forgot to cut it out.

Even though it'd be a real pain in the ass, you might consider pulling everything off the playfield and sending it back to CPR to have them cut the slot. As long as you get this exact playfield back you've already done the hard part of fitting everything in the right spot and there's no wiring to content with. Very frustrating though...

We believe we've got a solution... ArnieC it'll be a simple MRS that attaches underneath the shooter lane with 1 screw, I'll go ahead an PM you....

Pretty awesome of you. Guys like you that makes this hobby shine. We all need to help each other out, especially when a company makes a big mistake.

So Matt and I are researching this location for the MRS and I have a CPR playfield also. Mine has the slot. So CPR fixed this at some point although I think I bought this playfield early in the original production?

The newer runs are the ones missing the slot. I have one from year plus and it has no slot

    #20 1 year ago

    Ahh! Got it. Bummer

Well - Matt and I are working on this fix. If it works well, it would be an interesting thing since from the top, you won't see anything, but the switch will be working. Maybe help keep that groove from getting more torn up from ball ejections also.

I went ahead and cut the slot with a router. Thank you for all the ideas.

Check out the kruzman thread lately on the importance of clearing the edges so they won’t chip out.

That looks great! Nice especially working around the stuff you had installed already.

If you guys get a switch that works for the shooter lane, please post it. I would like to avoid the router if possible, when I get to mine.

We have something...we developed it for this purpose after seeing the post this weekend - if you don't want to router - hit us up when ready!

Any reason CPR is not doing this cut? I just quickly scanned the shop, and it looks like almost all playfields are missing this cut.

    #29 1 year ago

Most games before the mid-80’s don’t have a shooter lane switch, so a lot of the games they have aren’t supposed to have them.

I recently picked up a TOTAN playfield from CPR and it has the slot cut. Had me worried for a moment.

Everything is back on. The missing switch slot probably cost me a day of work/rework. I coated the route red slot with a water base product from Sherwin Williams call Diamond Plate.

Hard to say (is it from an old run - is it still happening), but I just got a call last week from a customer that was missing the slot...and was looking for an MRS solution...

Ok maybe I have been on hiatus too long but what is an MRS solution. Assume it is a newer tech that I am not aware of

Nevermind!!! I clicked through your profile. This is amazing

Teknotoyz is the man with the plan - once he receives the MRS - he'll be documenting what he does...and if the solution is viable.
