If you prefer the look of grey, go for it. But if a CPR playfield doesn't have a grey backside, it doesn't mean it's not sealed. It most certainly is. We roll on either Varathane Diamondcoat (water based) or MinWax polyeurethane (oil based). Depending on what stock we have on hand. It soaks into the grain, later give it a 220 grit buzz to smoothen the swollen grain, and that's the backside.

No CPR playfield has ever had an unsealed backside.
