I did hammer the guides in without grinding them and there was no cracking in the clear. I can post some pics if you like. I think I did redrill the holes so they were the same size as the holes on the original playfield.
you should be ok. Remember they pound posts exactly like this all the time in clear from the factory.
Absolutely the scariest part of my playfield swap was exactly this question. They just pound right in.

I ended up using one of the bits in Ron Kruzman's clear install kit. I used this super pointy one and barely touched the clear. The guides went in easily and didn't crack the clear. I also used a variety of his other bits on all of the holes to prevent the clear from cracking. I highly recommend getting his kit.
