I just got this today. I bought it NIB and from the original buyer, who had Two of these.
Made in 2018 and now the clear has had time to dry and evaporate.

I can't install this garbage. Now I have to wet-sand and re-clear in an attempt to fill the low spots and make it look flat again?

This has more waves than the Atlantic Ocean! I've had 40yr old EMs with better looking playfields.

Looks like total SH1T! Or am I being too picky? I think not?

Makes the new Sterns look much better now! lol

#3 4 years ago

I wonder what caused that?

How much did it cost? How did the seller's other one look?

#5 4 years ago
Quoted from galaxian:

Likely how it was stored. Temperature fluctuations and high humidity can cause the wood to expand and contract which makes the wood grain visible

#6 4 years ago

1k I paid to Pirates Life for this.

#7 4 years ago

Have you contacted the seller?

-2
#8 4 years ago

I will fix it myself because it took me many months to find an earthshaker playfield.

I probably would not have bought this if the seller described this situation or sent me close-up pics.

Ah FOK!!

The back of playfield looks same, minus the art and clear of course.
Just the wood grain showing through the thin clear coat on the face side?

#9 4 years ago

It would be showing through if it were just painted too. The clearcoat has actually amplified what you're seeing within the playfield.
It's one thing to look like an ocean but if you run your finger across it, does it feel like the ridges of a potato chip?

This is the natural grain of the wood coming through.
The ink and clear have absorbed into it like sponge. This is exclusive to the wood which is why you won’t see that in the inserts.
It is a real tough thing to predict.
The playfield likely looked as slick as glass when it was fresh and over time the wood has reclaimed the materials.
Sanding and polishing will help.
Reclearing will reset it but there is no guarantee that it won’t look the same in another 6 or so months.
I have redone ones like this numerous times over the years. Sometimes it can be fully eliminated others it can come back in time although never as bad.

#11 4 years ago

MY ES Gold has a variety of defects which make me question how it ever got graded as a Gold, but it sure doesn't look that bad. Id advise anybody, forget their grading and ask for detailed pics when buying second hand.

#12 4 years ago

Wow my earthshaker silver looks nothing like that its smooth as glass. something definitely went wrong with the process on that!!

#13 4 years ago

Does if feel rough to the touch?

#14 4 years ago

There should be a grading mark on it. Are you sure it's a Gold?

#15 4 years ago

Its a GOLD! Of course they all have marking on the back. Says, "Gold".

Yes, it feels like a potatoe chip.

The seller told me it was not like this on Wed when he shipped, which I find hard to believe.
No water damage to box, and has not rained near me in a while.

#16 4 years ago

Gold.....pfft.

I think this was a Brown.

I have a Cyclone playfield that they wouldn't even grade as a Bronze (and I got a great deal) that doesn't look that bad. I'm pretty sure your seller is full of it.

Did the seller supply you with hi res images? Should be easy to tell if it was like this if they had. Unless they were taken at the time THEY got it.

I can paint and clear. Made this yesterday.
Used 2-part Auto Clear on top of the decals.

Has some boogers and lint in it, but it was a fast project based on spare wrinkled decal and a $20 skateboard deck.
I can do better in a clean room.

#20 4 years ago

That's my last order from Pirate man.

Dude must think I'm an idiot or something?

He's trying to tell me this JUST happened AFTER he shipped it to me on Wed.....Two days to me. I got Friday Morn.

What a load of shit! I'll fix it, and post my story and never buy again from him.

#21 4 years ago

I'm wondering if you can even sand that. The paint under the clear in a high spot may be higher than the top level clear in a groove next to it...

Why don't you just return it to the seller?

#23 4 years ago

I know! Just a light scuff with 1000 to break the gloss

I totally hear ya bro. I make things very very small for a living.

I work in microns.

#24 4 years ago
Quoted from Deez:

Why don't you just return it to the seller?

Because I paid as Family and Friends, and he is saying it was not like that when he shipped it to me.
He did offer a return, but what if he says now I don't get refund when he gets it, or UPS shipping damage, or ??
I paid for shipping with $1k insurance to me when I bought it a few days ago.
AND, this is something I think I can fix and I need One.

I don't trust this guy now! Fork him!
My mistake for not asking for high-res pics.
Of course this looked like this 2 days ago!
He knew.

Not taking the chance to return it and loose everything.

calling major BS on Pirates Life, no way this thing was issue free Wednesday. dirty, dirty, pinball folks. There are some real scum suckers in this hobby.

#27 4 years ago

It should be obvious my intentions.

I said I was going to fix it and use it.

Just sharing my story.

#28 4 years ago

get your money back man. seriously...give that back to him and let him fix it.

#29 4 years ago

No, he and CPR want to pass this "Gold" crap off to us and then tell us it was perfect when shipped??

Trying to make me feel bad about it at the same time!

Trying to tell me this was a favor and I should be thankful?

He needs to learn that people don't like this type of sales.

What goes around.....

come on man, if someone sold you some garbage like that for $1000 plus insured shipping you wouldn't be upset? We all know the answer and we all know that playfield was not perfect Wednesday when he shipped it.

Quoted from Deez:

He is full of shit. Reputation ruined with me.
This is not a hissy fit. Just facts.
I'm not crying, and will fix it.
Just disappointed with another vendor in this industry.

Yes - I'd try and work it out with the seller we all make mistakes. Creating a drama thread on a forum just isn't the method I'd employ personally.

#35 4 years ago

Things I learned today.....

1) Ask for high-res photos when buying a playfield, even if it a NIB CPR Gold

2) DON'T pay PayPal Friends and Family for stuff like this!

Again, just sharing my story and what I have learned.

Things the seller learned.....

1) ??

2) Don't misrepresent something.

3) Don't Lie to customers saying the INSANE planking happened in less than 48hrs and that the playfield was perfect when shipped.

I'm calling him out in public because he is saying he did me a BIG favor selling to me in the first place, and that he is now going to get a ruined playfield back from me that was not like this Wed afternoon. Which is just bull-c0cky. Don't try to feed me BS or you will get called-out in public! Have a nice weekend ya Pirate bastard!

#36 4 years ago

While you are examining your playfield, do you have lots of what looks like contaminants in the dark blue and green?

#37 4 years ago

Yes, Shit in the Blue and Green.

Exactly!

#38 4 years ago

White is very thin layer and almost transparent. That has brown streaks in it as if someone laid a cigarette in the paint before pulling the ink.
Not impressed with the screen printing from CPR after being a serious collector of screen-printed Rock posters and a pinball lover.
I'm not sure what skills they exceed in, but screen printing is not One of them if this is a Gold.

Bamboo playfield with organic colors made by smashing berries and grass?

Its a "Green playfield"?

#42 4 years ago

You can’t wet sand that out. Just return it bro and save yourself some grief

#43 4 years ago

Same here. I was disappointed with that.

#44 4 years ago

Light scuff to break the gloss and covering with this....

Have done it 5x this year, and tried multiple times 2-part Auto Clear.

$169 for a little bag!

95% solid, where as Auto Clear evaporates up to 85% and only 15% solid.
It self-levels way better than sprat Clear!

I didn't like the Auto Clear. After 2 months drying time (Crazy long) it was such a thin layer!
Totally shrank and turned into nothing after 5 cans, and 5 days spraying/sanding/spraying
.

Unfortunately I’ve had this issue. Sanded and recleared. Looked perfect for a few weeks then the ridges returned. This doesn’t happen overnight. Sorry this got dumped on you. Good luck.

#46 4 years ago

I can fix with Resin that is 100x stronger and more solid particles than Auto-Clear.

20x stronger than Epoxy.

#47 4 years ago

I have ZERO protection for returns.

I paid via PayPal Family and Friends after he messaged me on Facebook saying he had a spare. (My mistake!)

I'm not in the mood to drive to him and get my money back.

Dude is a scam bag and now I don't trust him at all for a full refund.

#48 4 years ago
Quoted from turbo2nr:

To be fair, ES is the first playfield I've bought from them that had this issue. Unfortunately, it's also my first Gold. The others have been rock solid with the colors.

#49 4 years ago

"Polycuramine" is the word of the day people.

95% solid (5% evaporate when curing)

Waaaay harder than any paint on the planet and harder than traditional epoxy. Not cheap!

.

Auto Clear......15% solid.....85% evaporate and takes forever to cure and is not as hard. But it is a lot cheaper.
