Well, shut my mouth. Another thread on the virus. I think I'll lurk for awhile.

This is now my go to for reasons I can’t mention. I am going to change my location to Texas and see what happens.

#78 4 years ago

Check back in a year or so all of the nothing to be concerned about crowd. I hope you’re right!

I wonder why the prez signed a 8.5 billion dollar aid package for Coronavirus?

#91 4 years ago

Ok. Couple days ago, none in Colorado...then some guy up skiing that flew in from Italy, then a guy from a cruise, then a lady from another cruise...NOW a parent from the school near my kid’s school, they closed early today...that parents kids hang with a kid from my kids school...JACKPOT.

From none to less than a Kevin Bacon away from my family. WTF?

#92 4 years ago

Mildly freaking out.

#93 4 years ago

Mainly because I am picturing the schools closed and my kids all being home for god knows how long...that and a bunch of kid’s grandparents getting seriously ill

#94 4 years ago

Need soup and bullets!

Quoted from cottonm4:

Means you get to keep it all in the family

Man, I was thinking we were weeks away from anything as nutty as school closings. Bam! Literally out of the blue on our doorstep...

#99 4 years ago

Wait until they start testing. Old ebola czar was saying job one would be testing every pneumonia patient like yesterday...healthcare workers probably exposed now.

#101 4 years ago

Yeah, the economy is toast...they will have to do a stimulus like Bush did when he sent every taxpayer $600? or whatever.

#106 4 years ago

Amid a coronavirus outbreak in the United States, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is encouraging older people and people with severe chronic medical conditions to "stay at home as much as possible."

#108 4 years ago

President Bush on Wednesday signed the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, calling it a "booster shot" for the American economy.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_Stimulus_Act_of_2008

Maybe you’re thinking of automotive bailout?

#111 4 years ago
Quoted from chad:

More
Read through it and I could of swore it was out under the 2009 administration.

Were you a taxpayer at that time? Everyone remembers Bush sending out the $300 and $600 checks.

Anyway, the economy is going to tank and nothing spends like money. I had my doubts when Bush did it but studies since have shown people actually used the cash and it had a temporary boost effect. I’m thinking we’ll need that even more pretty soon.

#117 4 years ago
Quoted from okayestpinballer:

Early data suggest older people are twice as likely to have serious COVID-19 illness.

Wonder what final numbers will look like. I am seeing several deaths of people in their 50’s reported from this, which I had not considered older...

Quoted from pinmike:

Very simple look at were they say the outbreak happened in China. Its part of China where majority of our ingredients for medication comes from to the U.S.

So, let me get this straight, the pandemic was created on purpose to cause a drug shortage and drive up prices?

Prices for drugs that don’t do anything to treat or cure covid?

He was joking

#142 4 years ago

The virus has no cure, no vaccine, no drug treatment. The economy will tank, the vaccine will be ready in a year or 2 at earliest. How does this benefit anyone?

#148 4 years ago
Quoted from pinmike:

They will have something very soon you watch,

I hope so but still think it’s impossible that this was done with a long game profit motive.

#164 4 years ago

Nobody’s trolling you...just looking for some evidence.

You realize the outbreaks ended with containment and a vaccine essentially? They solve it medically...they haven’t had time to do that yet. It will end with a vaccine that’s incorporated in to yearly flu shots and we’re back to anti vaxxers etc. It’s the lag period that people are concerned about.

#178 4 years ago

The other school shut early. CDC says if they sanitize the whole school they are good. The family from that school definitely has it and are quarantined. My kids head of school says today that the rumor that kids from quarantine family and our school hanging in last few days is false. Hopefully that’s the case.

They are saying the parent that has it hadn’t been on campus recently. I am a bit fuzzy on the status of their kids...they had to be on campus so maybe they tested negative so far?

They are sending emails/texts with updates daily with all the goings on and precautions. So as of today, we’re a go for launch on Monday!

I think you might have bigger problems if you have enough “hard alcohol “ coursing through your veins to kill a virus. Probably die of liver failure first.

#220 4 years ago
Quoted from Mike_J:

It’s a serious virus that the vast majority of U.S. citizens will not contract.

Low end estimates are 40%.

This sounds nice, right?
“ The new coronavirus causes little more than a cough if it stays in the nose and throat, which it does for the majority of people unlucky enough to be infected. Danger starts when it reaches the lungs.
One in seven patients develops difficulty breathing and other severe complications, while 6% become critical. These patients typically suffer failure of the respiratory and other vital systems, and sometimes develop septic shock, according to a report by last month’s joint World Health Organization-China mission.

The progression from mild or moderate to severe can occur “very, very quickly,” said Bruce Aylward, a WHO assistant director-general who co-led a mission in China that reviewed data from 56,000 cases.“

Being clever and flippant is great. I hope you’re not in the 40% and if you are I hope it doesn’t get in your lungs.

#225 4 years ago
Quoted from cottonm4:

How many kids and how many parents in that school? What about the teachers and their families ?

That school staying closed for 2 more days at least for cleaning.

Another separate HS has 2 students in self quarantine because they were exposed to a positive person. No sign of infection though

#227 4 years ago
Quoted from Honch:

How are the local stores in your area? Is panic buying in full swing yet?

I don’t go to the big box stores so not sure. Amazon local delivery has limited items and quantities available if that’s any sign! I get all my big stuff automatically delivered from them.

#232 4 years ago
Quoted from TheFamilyArcade:

I’ve been reading some sobering articles in the Atlantic today. The US was really cavalier in their preparation for this. We are flat out not ready to absorb the full impact of a mass infection. It’s really kind of shameful. I hope it doesn’t come to pass

Weeks late and still sending mixed nonsense messages. Small example, go ahead and dock 3,500 people...we’re not sure yet where you will be quarantined though

The jet set crowd in Aspen may have it:
CDPHE said it was aware of a confirmed COVID-19 case in Australia with ties to the Aspen community. One woman in her 20s who was visiting Aspen returned home to Australia earlier this week, where she tested positive. The woman had contact with Aspen residents and visitors at social gatherings, CDPHE said.

2-week mandatory quarantine for all arrivals to Israel now.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-51809818

"They will have to prove they had adequate accommodation to be quarantined during their stay in the country."

This is a whole new airbnb category...

So, Israel is effectively turning off tourism. Not sure how big that industry is there but nobody is booking a vacation or even a business trip to Israel now.

#267 4 years ago
Quoted from roffels:

It's a pretty big deal. Imagine booking a trip to go see the Holy Land, only to get there and be quarantined.

I hope they communicate it to the airlines/travel sites. That would be a huge bummer if you fly there not knowing.

All of Italy?

Mr Conte described the measures as "I stay home" - with people forbidden to assemble in public.
"No more nightlife; we can't allow this anymore since they are occasions for contagion," he said.
The restrictions are similar to those earlier applied to the worst affected Lombardy region, and 14 other provinces.
The government has said only those with a valid work or family reason that cannot be postponed will be permitted to travel.

Cross posting this from prez former security guy:

In an op-ed published by The Washington Post on Monday, Bossert also stated, “officials must pull the trigger on aggressive interventions,” later adding, “Aggressive interventions put off and ease the peak burden on hospitals and other health-care infrastructure.”
“We are 10 days from the hospitals getting creamed.”
Bossert specifically suggesting that “School closures, isolation of the sick, home quarantines of those who have come into contact with the sick, social distancing, telework and large-gathering cancellations must be implemented before the spread of the disease in any community reaches 1 percent.”

Kid’s school goes on 2 weeks spring break this Friday. My prediction, that’s it for going to school this year. They all had to confirm wifi access for “potential” online learning. If they do go back after spring break, I see a 100% chance that someone brings it back to school after traveling.

#333 4 years ago
Quoted from adborto:

I’m leaning towards doing that as well. I’d rather be cautious about this.

Yeah, that’s why I wish they’d just call it already. I’m pretty sure it’s going to come to that anyway.

I’d be more cavalier about it if I didn’t have young kids while at the same time being an oldish guy...I don’t want to kick it and leave them hanging.

#334 4 years ago
Quoted from Wickerman2:

The jet set crowd in Aspen may have it:
CDPHE said it was aware of a confirmed COVID-19 case in Australia with ties to the Aspen community. One woman in her 20s who was visiting Aspen returned home to Australia earlier this week, where she tested positive. The woman had contact with Aspen residents and visitors at social gatherings, CDPHE said.

So she hung out with 18 people in Aspen, they put them in quarantine. 13 of them have tested positive.

#338 4 years ago
Quoted from arcademojo:

Or can you catch it just by standing close to someone?

I wonder if she gave it 2-3, then they gave it to 2-3...sounds like a group traveling together.

#346 4 years ago

Neighborhood Elementary is closed today. Parent tested positive, interviewing everyone to see who was in contact. My kids go to next school over. It’s closing in! Wish they’d hit the eject button and get it over with.

#348 4 years ago

I read an estimate of an 8 week shut down would effectively stop this thing. I’m down with an 8 week chill out. This is what governments are for, dealing with societal crisis.

#350 4 years ago
Quoted from Wolfmarsh:

Shut down of what?

Schools, public events, sports, any unnecessary travel, the whole deal. Pull an Italy was the gist of it. Quarantine in place, let cases resolve.

#351 4 years ago

When should you get tested?

Wife flew on several flights in last week to East coast. She now has a fever and fatigue, no cough.

Called Doctor, they said call health dept. Called health dept, get a recording and then a hang up.

There’s a drive up testing but you need Doctor authorization.

“If you’re sick, stay home”. OK. Do I quarantine? What about my family? Co-workers?

Seems impossible to get tested unless you have 1 foot in the grave. Meanwhile you interact with your family, kids go to school ... probably nothing but this seems like an example of why this is spreading.

#355 4 years ago

Lol...it seems like a long time ago but waaay back then, there were only cases in CA/West coast. We both thought it’d be fine. Her job requires in person meetings with State government officials around the Country.

Now, a week later, it’s coast to coast. This is why I wish they had the balls to recommend limit travel and go hard at this.

So she’s sick, who knows? Flu, random fever, other virus, corona....apparently the kids, myself, co-workers just have to go on with life and hope it’s nothing!

Great plan USA....see also: Italy.

#356 4 years ago
Quoted from Wolfmarsh:

A local teacher was quarantined and is now sick, yet sent her kids to school during her quarantine. Parents are not happy.

That’s for sure crazy.

I’m just puzzled. What do you do if you have a fever? We want a test and can’t get it. Of course we haven’t been to China! You know who else hasn’t been there? A bunch of other people with the virus. Insanity.

#359 4 years ago
Quoted from Xenon75:

Testing will only say yes or no, it will still be up to you/her to overcome it.

I am more concerned with my kids spreading it to 2 different schools...co-workers spreading it god knows where etc. That’s what a test will stop. Everyone getting it right now and slamming the healthcare system....also dying etc

#366 4 years ago

94,000 cases, 50,000 recovered...not sure those numbers mean much. That would mean 44,000 haven’t recovered which seems high. Of the 50,000 we don’t know the severity of each case either.

#368 4 years ago

Local news just did a fact check on that stupid doctors office white board meme...100% false. All the years wrong, covid facts wrong...apparently adapted from a tweet by a radio host.

#369 4 years ago

University of Colorado going to online classes for remainder of year.

Warriors playing to an empty stadium....seem to remember predictions that would never happen.

#381 4 years ago

And now, just got the email from my kids elementary school. Parent/family from school has been exposed to a positive person. They are in 14 day quarantine. Somehow they don’t qualify for a test either....yet they are 100% sure they were exposed.

Not sure what course of action to take here.

#384 4 years ago
Quoted from mcluvin:

If you can do it, I'd consider keeping the kids home for a week or 2. Once it gets in the school, it's gonna spread.

I’m actually trying not to overreact but I’m getting sort of pissed in general. 2 Elementary schools in my hood, 1 closed this morning and then our school announcing exposure this afternoon? WTF? Nobody can get tested?!

I am probably going to keep my son home tomorrow...though it’d be nice to know if my wife has it! I disinfected the house as best I could.

ramifications of shutting everything down for a period of time

This is shutting down NON-essentials...nobody is saying walk away from the nuclear reactor . We need to slow it.

#410 4 years ago

School is going to give parents info on what to do if we “choose” to keep our kids home later today.

Every pandemic movie/book I’ve checked out—a lot, I love those—always have a room, usually at the CDC filled with people staring at screens and talking to every state, telling them what to do. I wish movie pandemic were happening.

#424 4 years ago
Quoted from okayestpinballer:

What the hell happened there?

I think they requested covid testing and were denied and in the interim it spread. All this shit is the tests. South Korea has 200,000 tests for fuksake.

#428 4 years ago
Quoted from Isochronic_Frost:

How could you think 200k would even be enough for 50 million people...?

I didn’t think that. Several factors here, the speed of the testing, the availability of testing. S. Korea doesn’t have 50 million people suspected of having virus, we don’t have 300 million suspected.

We have tested maybe 7000 people. Look at the numbers for korea, taiwan etc. they have their shit together.

If you are in korea, taiwan etc. and have a fever and have traveled sure as shit 1 of those 200,000 tests is available for you.

Here’s what’s happening in the USA. Listen closely, unless you prove you have direct contact with a known covid person YOU WILL NOT GET TESTED. Emergency rooms have people come in with the symptoms, NO TESTS, so what do they do? They test for strep, run mass viral panels, pneumonia....they have to rule out EVERYTHING ELSE and THEN they can “request “ test from CDC.

What I have described is happening in many areas of the Country.

Do you understand ?

The ER’s are sending these people home while they request the test. Doctors refer you to health dept who won’t test unless you fit their narrow definition.

We are sending sick people in to our communities.

Get it?

#429 4 years ago

PS the US said we’d have a million tests at the end of LAST WEEK. They are full of shit. Do not believe it.

Just look in to it a bit, honestly. We tried all day to get a test. It’s impossible.

#438 4 years ago

Do you understand how the disease spreads?

We knew about this since January and MARCH 11 we are ramping up our testing?

This is how community spread happens. I think you’re missing the basic logic the disease and epidemiology experts are giving us.

Did you see the government’s lead Doctor on this testify today? Dr. Fauci? Would you believe him?

It’s not fear mongering to state obvious facts. This crap has been allowed to spread. It was in a small area on the west coast and now both Elementary schools in my hood have parents with it.

If a dangerous disease is spreading, wouldn’t you want to test people quickly with symptoms? Wouldn’t that prevent spread?

Dr. Fauci, governments main guy explained this is at least 10x more deadly than the flu.

#441 4 years ago
Quoted from Isochronic_Frost:

Unless you’re elderly you’re better off just staying home and riding out the symptoms, and that’s coming from the infectious disease specialists.

Ok. Do you keep your kids home? Do you keep your spouse home? Do you tell your coworkers? Do you tell your school.

If only there were some way to be sure.....I don’t know, like a TEST!

#446 4 years ago
Quoted from LukyDuck:

South Korea has TESTED more than 200,000 people. The US has only tested 7,000.

Quoted from arcademojo:

Then stop trying to make it one.

When? Where? If our current governments response is slow and incoherent, it’s slow and incoherent! I don’t care who is running the show. I’m complaining. I don’t get to at least complain? You can’t get a test and you can’t complain about it? Tough shit. I will continue until they get their shit together. Sorry if that hurts anyone’s feelings...not intended to.

So far, no. Reports that someone didn’t want widespread testing because that would make numbers go up and look bad. He knows this is in for the long haul, they all need to get on his script:

Anthony Fauci, one of the top U.S. health officials leading the country’s response to the coronavirus, urged Americans on Sunday to “hunker down significantly more” as the virus continues to spread across the country.

“Whatever it takes to do that, that’s what I’d like to see,” Fauci, a medical doctor, said during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” adding that elderly and immunocompromised individuals are not the only people at risk.

“Younger people should be concerned for two reasons: You are not immune or safe from getting seriously ill,” he said. “So protect yourself. But remember: You could also be a vector or a carrier. ... That’s why everybody’s got to take this seriously.”

Earlier Sunday, Fauci told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he would prefer the U.S. be “overly aggressive and get criticized for overreacting” rather than see the spread of the virus continue to jump.

#1152 4 years ago

Fauci said it could take “several weeks to a few months” for life to return to “normal” across the country.

We might have a Washington State type situation coming:

Colorado’s first death was an 80 year old lady from the Springs area. Before knowing she was “really” sick she attended a Bridge tournament down there with 284 people of the same demographic. 1 person has already tested positive. They are trying to track down all of them.

“An alert has been issued for anyone who played at the Colorado Bridge Center in El Paso County between February 27 and March 3 - but especially in a tournament on February 29 and March 1 - to contact officials over fears they might be infected.
At least one person who attended the center has already tested positive for the virus, while two more have been hospitalized with symptoms.

John Dukellis, a director of the center who is self-isolating over fears he may have the illness, said at least 284 people - 98 per cent of whom are over the age of 60 - attended the tournmanet and are now at risk.
'This group is going to be hard hit,' Dukellis told The Denver Post. 'This is just the beginning.'
It is thought the woman had some symptoms at the time she attended the tournament, but not ones that she was concerned about.”

Estimating Risk for Death from 2019 Novel Coronavirus Disease, China, January–February 2020 - Author affiliations: Georgia State University, Atlanta, Georgia, USA (K. Mizumoto, G. Chowell); Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan (K. Mizumoto)
"In conclusion, our estimates of the risk for death from COVID-19 in China as of February 11, 2020, were as high as 12% in the epicenter of the epidemic and as low as ≈1% in the less severely affected areas in China. Because the risk for death from COVID-19 is probably associated with a breakdown of the healthcare system in the absence of pharmaceutical interventions (i.e., vaccination and antiviral drugs), enhanced public health interventions (including social distancing measures, quarantine, enhanced infection control in healthcare settings, and movement restrictions), as well as enhanced hygienic measures in the general population and an increase in healthcare system capacity, should be implemented to rapidly contain the epidemic."

Unless you list a specific item, I’m just not on board with both side-ism either. To generalize, both side-ism, for example gives an equal platform to pure bunk like climate deniers. So, you’ll have the media saying this “side” SAYS this and this side SAYS this...in lots and lots and lots of cases there IS a factual truth. So instead of saying, all the science or Doctors say this and you are denying it, they present stuff as more or less equal opinion.

#1904 4 years ago

Not to fan panic flames but HHS and UK equivalent reports on crisis have been released and they predict a very bad outlook....much worse than either government is stating publicly.

Waves of outbreaks for 1-1.5 years, no real end in site until vaccine...they’ve lost too much time already. Very restrictive lockdowns for better part of a year are needed.

And:
“Supply chain and transportation impacts due to ongoing COVID-19 outbreak will likely result in significant shortages for government, private sector, and individual U.S. consumers.”

So, the TP nuts may have been on to something.

But, seriously, bold big, yuuuuuge, action. Listen to the epidemiology guys.

“Governors are supposed to be doing a lot of this work,” he said. “The federal government’s not supposed to be out there buying vast amounts of items and then shipping. You know, we’re not a shipping clerk. We’ll help out wherever we can.”

“ announcement on Wednesday that he had signed the Defense Production Act (DPA) as part of an effort to ramp up U.S. production of emergency medical supplies. On Thursday, he said he would only utilize the DPA if it should be absolutely needed.”

Quoted from wolfemaaan:“You know you young people! Begone with youth, I’ve always been a 89 year old grumpy from Ohio even when I was 16”

I was an uninformed, sheltered, small town moron at that age. I imagine back then I would have possibly taken a similar view.

The world was a lot smaller 40 years ago though. Three TV networks and print news. I could give myself a pass on not realizing how serious something was to the planet.

Today? iPhones? Social media? 24/7 info? These kids are fucking morons...that Desantos guy is the bigger effing moron though for allowing this shit. We have idiots and zealots in charge in a lot of places...looking at you Texas and the other 5 states that haven’t restricted anything.

Quoted from Djshakes:

I think the problem maybe that you find anyone that doesn't adhere to your philosophy is a moron, which is evident in a majority of your posts. Perhaps a little tolerance and understanding of other's perspectives may be helpful.

Respectfully, you’re way off. I don’t think anyone that doesn’t adhere to “my philosophy” is a moron. Again, you seem to ignore this in your responses, I am talking about a specific situation, a specific event, a specific set of measurable outcomes....I honestly have no idea what you are referring to. It seems like you are trying to say something but don’t actually want to say it? No idea. Be specific.

List of members of Congress that dumped stocks after a Coronavirus meeting is growing....it’d be awesome to have that kind of “insider” info. Is that legal?

Quoted from titanpenguin:

The virus has been here the last 3 months. The infection rate is not going up exponentially, only the numbers of those being tested. Yes the virus is spreading, but not at the rate of the positive tests.

What numbers are you talking about?
