Quoted from Tkaye:

Events are dropping like flies...
Concert cancellations (Pearl Jam, Madonna)
and now sporting events will play without fans...Golden State game after San Fransisco's 1,000 person maximum declaration and now the NCAA follows suit for the basketball tournaments to be played without fans. My guess is the Euro Cup and all North American based professional sports events are next...

It is affecting F1 auto racing as well...

Quoted from Wickerman2:

I think they requested covid testing and were denied and in the interim it spread. All this shit is the tests. South Korea has 200,000 tests for fuksake.

Your numbers are correct, but the wording is wrong.

South Korea has TESTED more than 200,000 people. The US has only tested 7,000.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/09/asia/south-korea-coronavirus-intl-hnk/index.html

Don’t worry...our government has said it has Millions of tests on the way. Just hold your breath until then.

Quoted from loneacer:

Maybe the powers that be secretly want 3-4% of the population to die?

Well, when it is the people who are collecting SS in the US that are most at risk, they might be thinking it will help the failing SS program.

#452 4 years ago
Quoted from Wickerman2:

Thanks. I’m flabbergasted that even this has to be a red vs blue Team War! For Christsakes ALL Grannies are in danger, not just certain ones.

Oh and get this, in South Korea the test are free. And if they have tested 200,000 people that means their government was prepared and had thousands on hand when the outbreak occurred.

#454 4 years ago
Quoted from loneacer:

A couple weeks of lost economic activity sure beats massive wealth destruction that takes years to recover from.

Exactly! But now that Wall Street has been affected, it is guaranteed they will have to step things up.

I just heard that Jared has been brought into this. So nothing more to worry about. He has settled the Middle East problems single-handedly.

Some people want to blame the media and in some cases I can agree with them. People have to learn to get their news from more than one media outlet. This will also explain why people are on opposite sides of the fence with their views.

Here is the hypocrisy of just one news media outlet. This is NOT a political video. Believe it or not, as one famous person used to say.

#473 4 years ago
Quoted from Honch:

Unfortunately you just wont get through to some of these people. Theyll be the ones in the ICU struggling to say, "but it's just a cold" as they take they're last breathe
You might as well just spend the rest of your night explaining exponential vectors to your pets. At least they could pretend to understand.

Sounds like you are describing my 85 yo father. He has several health related conditions and says the doctors are just after his money and are a bunch of quacks. Now take me home, he says. I love him. But his views of the world are a bit skewed if you ask me.

Oh and my pets could debate exponential vectors with you! That made me laugh.

Just heard the president say that domestic travel restrictions might be next.

https://weather.com/health/cold-flu/news/2020-03-12-coronavirus-updates-pandemic-us-confirmed-cases-covid19

It’s from The Weather Channel, so might be more media hype.

#642 4 years ago

The US has now tested 11,000 people. That is equal to the amount S. Korea is testing per day.

#660 4 years ago
Quoted from mcluvin:

Can I still fly to Korea?

If you feel like you want to get tested, sure! Oh and their government will pay for it. No copay.

#664 4 years ago

Supreme Court, White House and The Capital Building are now closed to visitors. But all is fine and Beautiful!

75,000 of the tests have now been made according to the CDC. So much for the million promised. Some people talk like they are trying to sell a Ponzi scheme. No, no...don’t listen to that guy. He works for a media organization. Listen to me.

#709 4 years ago

Well, since you brought it up. Some people are already speculating that the reason there is no travel ban to the UK and Ireland is because someone owns golf courses there.

#728 4 years ago

Just saw on the news that Italy has 34 hospital beds per 10,000 people and the US has 29 per 10,000. Italy supposedly has more beds and doctors per capita than the US and they are currently overwhelmed. More bad news.

Markets up 9% today. That’s progress towards people feeling better about this situation.

Hopefully, if the markets keep going up and they can slow down the spread, people will start wondering what are they doing with all this TP and hand sanitizer.

I have a prediction to make...in 9-12 months there will be a small baby boom from all the quarantined couples.

#903 4 years ago
Quoted from arcademojo:

It will take longer then that with all the people that are in denial.
Schools are closed but all the kids are out having meetups at the malls, bowling alley and other places. We just just had 3 people confirmed positive in the next county over and seems like most the people don't care.

My GF’s teenagers will be completing homework online so school does not really end for them even though school was shut down for 3 weeks I believe.

First week us spring vacation and the other two, online work.

Well, I am now in the camp of the “have people lost their minds”. Went to the store this evening to buy some things and the shelves are all half empty. Pictures were one thing, seeing it is different.

Quoted from stumptown:

Yeah I really hope it leads to a sea change in attitudes toward remote work. It's ridiculous how many fully digital jobs still require a daily office presence as a matter of course. While the impetus for it is obviously terrible, it will be very good for managers to be forced to see that remote workforces don't mean the end of the world, and for all of their employees to get a taste of the benefits of remote work. Even sporadic remote work can be a big quality of life boost and grants people a lot more flexibility to work around life events. Like you say, it also has hugely beneficial society wide knock on effects if everyone does it.

My company loves remote workers. Less office space to lease, own and maintain. Lowers overhead costs.

#918 4 years ago

I am also being bombarded by emails from businesses that have my email address. All telling me they are taking precautions. Car dealerships, Best Buy, Comcast, etc. That at least is encouraging. They are being proactive.

I suppose every piece of mail that is dropped off at your house is a potential carrier, along with the usual suspects money and credit card terminals.

Not my mail. It sits in the mailbox for a week before I throw it in the trash. It’s all junk. I could let it sit there for weeks. Might just do that now.

#1285 4 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

I'm not so lucky. Mine comes thru a slot in the front door on days the carrier is feeling ambitious. Other days he just throws it on the front porch.

#1338 4 years ago

If people keep ignoring the recommendations, then we could end up like Italy. What some people do not understand is that by ignoring the recommendations, you are in essence asking to be placed in a curfew or quarantine. You are making things worse, not better. If you have ever been in the military or on a team, then you should understand this concept.

Keep doing what you want. If things get worse, then you only have yourself to blame when they start shutting down businesses, put curfews in place and then government forced quarantines. You are the one who is putting your friends and neighbors out of work.

Why not just be a part of a team instead of bucking the recommendations. How hard is it for you to stay away from other people for a few days? SMH

https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/16/business/airlines-bailouts/index.html
============================================
So, last go around, the banks got bailed out, but it was their own fault.
The airlines are getting hammered through no fault of their own. Bail them out? Or not? It will be expensive, but letting the airlines go bankrupt Chapter 7 style is probably not wise, even though it can be considered a socialist measure.

I am curious to what term the government ends up calling it. They hate using bail-out now.

For those that think this is not a big deal, I suggest you do a little more reading...

Estimating Risk for Death from 2019 Novel Coronavirus Disease, China, January–February 2020 - Author affiliations: Georgia State University, Atlanta, Georgia, USA (K. Mizumoto, G. Chowell); Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan (K. Mizumoto)

"In conclusion, our estimates of the risk for death from COVID-19 in China as of February 11, 2020, were as high as 12% in the epicenter of the epidemic and as low as ≈1% in the less severely affected areas in China. Because the risk for death from COVID-19 is probably associated with a breakdown of the healthcare system in the absence of pharmaceutical interventions (i.e., vaccination and antiviral drugs), enhanced public health interventions (including social distancing measures, quarantine, enhanced infection control in healthcare settings, and movement restrictions), as well as enhanced hygienic measures in the general population and an increase in healthcare system capacity, should be implemented to rapidly contain the epidemic."

This is the first wave of this virus. I hope there isn’t a second come fall.

During the Spanish flu epidemic, it was the second wave that was far deadlier. I am not saying it will be this bad. But are people going to become complacent just in time for a potential second wave hits? Will there be any type of vaccine by then? I don’t think enough people are taking this seriously enough now.

Quote from the History Channel...

“ After subsiding over the summer, a second, even more powerful wave of influenza swept across the United States after two sailors in Boston contracted the illness. The flu quickly reached nearby military installations such as Camp Devens before spreading to civilian populations across the country.

Working 16 hours a day, Grist saw patients who arrived with coughs, sore throats and high fevers “very rapidly develop the most viscous type of pneumonia that has ever been seen.” Within hours, mahogany spots dotted soldiers’ cheeks before their faces turned such a dark shade of blue or purple from a lack of oxygen in their blood that Grist reported it became “hard to distinguish the colored men from the white.” Patients bled from their noses and ears, gasped for air as fluid filled their lungs and eventually suffocated from their own mucus and blood.”

I am not promoting doom and gloom. It happened once and could happen again IF people become complacent and no vaccine has yet been developed.

Just remember...just like there will always be another recession someday, there will be another deadly pandemic someday also. Will we be prepared?

More evidence of younger people ending up in the hospital.

Might or might not be behind the pay wall.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/18/health/coronavirus-young-people.html

The report, issued Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that — as in other countries — the oldest patients had the greatest likelihood of dying and of being hospitalized. But of the 508 patients known to have been hospitalized, 38 percent were notably younger — between 20 and 54. And nearly half of the 121 patients who were admitted to intensive care units were adults under 65, the C.D.C. reported.

“I think everyone should be paying attention to this,” said Stephen S. Morse, a professor of epidemiology at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. “It’s not just going to be the elderly. There will be people age 20 and up. They do have to be careful, even if they think that they’re young and healthy.”
