From my Operator perspective.....1 of our best earning games ever. SW too.
From my player perspective......meh on both.

What a waste of a good theme.
I find them to be a chance for quick points. They take one hit each and then bank a Super. It's not like I play to get them, but I don't groan out loud like I do with Trolls! There's so much other stuff packed into the game, having the brothers not be a bigger part of the theme is fine.

After re-reading your post. I may have misinterpreted your meaning. Either way, I think I'm missing your point with the Scoleri Brothers jab.
When I’ve played Ghostbusters they seem to call out “It’s the Scoleri Brothers” constantly. Which is pretty lame seeing as they were a minor forgettable reference from the 2nd forgettable movie.
I own GB, but the OP's year-old thesis is flawed at best (sorry), and it might be argued that GB is as well. It is certainly not as "good" as the LOTR it sits next to in my game room. I would argue it's also not better as a game than the other Stern in the room, a Ripley's.
Now that I've gotten that out of the way it's time for a however. So, HOWEVER, I will argue that some of GB's flaws add to its substantial charm and unique game play. It forces me to play differently than I play any other game. I feel that optimizing my score is constantly in jeopardy not from missing the correct shot, but by MAKING the wrong shot. An obvious example is hitting the right captive ball to bring up the Scoleri targets. If you mishandle the ball on a skill shot and accidentally hit an unlit shot then you have no one to blame but yourself for squandering a significant opportunity. In almost every mode you have to plan your shot progression (at least the last two shots) to prevent starting the "wrong" mode next. Less obvious, do you collect a lit jackpot on ball 2 for, let's say 15M, only to get Loopin' Supers started on ball 3 with a measly 1M jackpot, easily costing you 100M or more? Or, let's say you light both multipliers and all three Storage Facility locks. Can you thread the needle and lock your balls without hitting a multiplier target on either side of the left ramp and risking timing out the multiplier to little gain.
GB IS frustrating. It is also rewarding. It is flawed in that the ladder modes do seem somewhat linear. However, it has several challenging, unique, and rewarding shots. But several shots can send the ball out of control, airborne, or even lead to an inlane to outlane jump. Then there is the amazing art package. Yes, it can be both frenetic and somewhat schizophrenic. At the end of the day, what clinches it for me is that it definitely has that "one more game" addictive quality. YMMV.
GB has really lackluster callouts. Ernie Hudson was great as Winston Zeddemore but he couldn't possibly sound more bored when lending his voice to the game. Awful flow. So many technical problems. Really sad because it is such a landmark 80's franchise.
I really think it’s the code thAt makes it not as good as it should of been. I love the shots the toys the creativity
It’s the code

I have to agree with this. I wish the game at least had more settings to customize the difficulty of things like ladder progression and left captive ball timeouts (ie: the timer can be disabled if I want). WCWS just wasn't fun and I had no interest in progressing to this, or the final wizard mode.

New code coming soon so hopefully it puts this game over the top.

Hope this is true. I love my Pro but can’t wait for it to really feel complete
Everyone plays differently! No one pin can ever claim supremacy, due to our diversity! My GB/Pre is a blast for me! All modded out and dialed in,mine flows very smoothly! After lowering that right tight ramp,It hits cleanly and doesn't back down the ramp any more!
I've gone through three "love it"/"tired of it" cycles since owning a Pro over the last 18 months. It is a good game, but the ladders can drag it down if you play it a lot. If I stop playing for a period and come back, I really enjoy it. The art, sound, and theme integration are top notch. If the code evolves into something new, and it's not just a bug fix, this could be one of Stern's best.
I was fortunate to buy an issue free GB. Very few adjustments and fixes. I can understand people hating this game if it's not set up right, but it really is a good game when things are dialed in. It doesn't deserve the hate it gets from a few loud people.

Hope so. Then maybe I'll actually turn it on.
Quoted from Guinnesstime:Q: "OK who brought the dog?"
A: Stern did. This pin sucked.
lol
There are several Sterns that I'd like to own yet. Given my finite space and funds, I'm grateful that Ghostbusters has not merited a spot on my list.
GBLE is a FUN awesome pin.
Being different is a good thing imo
Needs to be dialed in but I agree that code improvement
Which is why I should only buy Lyman, JJP and now maybe Elwin and Bowen games
My only experience with it was one where the operator never bothered to change (or set it up like that on purpose!) the kickout to prevent the ball from shooting sdtm regardless of what you do with the flippers. It's not totally Stern's fault that the operator set it up like that but the fact that it is possible makes it a big fat no from me.

My pro I have on route I lowered that left eject scoop to a dribble so it returns perfectly to the left flipper, added a shaker, and the outline guard with center drain bumper. The game really needs that center drain bumper and outline protector to make it fun, without it it can get really frustrating really quickly IMO. I love the theme and artwork, call outs are funny and decently done with Ernie. Wizard mode is blah, one last code update could make this a gem of a game but for me right now its super fun, but not the best Stern. Earns really well on location though!
