Quoted from lordloss:

How many different wire colors would there be in a WPC cabinet for example? Anyone?

This is an example of wire colors used in a TAF (From BOM and PBL Parts Lookup) The first # designates the total number of inches. 18 gauge and 22 gauge.

Has anyone recreated a wiring harness in any of the 'build from parts' projects?

Seems like the layout complexity and assembling all the connectors would be the most time consuming part of the build.

Not having a donor harness would be a deal breaker.

Wpc 95 wire loom is made in layers.
Switch, coil power , inserts, gi, all are single looms.
My MM clone (Medieval Castle)
cost my 1850 euro to make from a nbaf.
The nbaf donor cost me €500.
Total €2350+€500 for the color dmd = €2850.
And 18 months design and build.

Quoted from mamawaldee:

I am in a similar boat as you, TOTAN is on the list of games I want. It is effectively the new Monster Bash for today. I won't pay $10k for it.
Although not on CGC's published list, at this price level that can change.

Wait, is there a published list? I have a couple games I've been thinking of trading out, which I would strongly prefer to do before they get remade, if that's happening. Does anyone have an official or unofficial list they could share (or send me in PM)?

Not from CGC or PPS.

I thought he meant his private list and since MBr is coming out, TOTAN is taking its place as a sought after game. Makes sense, there's only around 3,000 of these beauties out there in the world. I do see CC coming out before TOTAN in terms of remakes.

My bottom line is this - without a donor game it's not that it's impossible, it's just highly impractical.

I've built a few simple ones. Black for ground, red for 5v, white for switches, etc.
For the stuff I'm designing myself, I use twisted pair 4 conductor wire with RJ11 plugs to clean up the wiring to my i/o boards. Then it's a short run to the switch or solenoid. Easy to isolate and replace.

So after doing that, would you consider assembling all the wiring for a TOTAN from scratch using only a schematic?

Yes, assuming that I had sourced the rest of the machine. It's not easy, by any stretch of the imagination. But I approach tasks like that in stages. Pick a section, wire it, test it, move on.

Assuming I have a good resource for all the wires needed for a WPC harness, how much would you spend on a new harness?

I wired a playfield.. i think it was close to $400 in wire (matching colors)

Did you buy from pps?

#63 9 months ago

yeah from PPS/bay area amusements

Looks like that wire is 22 cents a foot, I can get it much lower than that. So theoretically if I were to invest in a set of WPC wires I could make it worthwhile for both customer and maker.

Selling harnesses would most likely see a surge in demand for all the other parts... from there, either we'll get more licensed stuff supplied from Rick, or a price spike :/

#66 9 months ago

I doubt wire harnesses would be cheap to assemble. I did mine in about a month, run a couple every night. Williams documentation is great.

We do wire harness' at my place of work, so I would be able to make a harness board and recreate these somewhat fast.

This was definitely the consideration I had, was the wiring harness. It's not like you can pickup a crappy TOTAN and scavenge the harness. There is a lot to build if you're doing it from scratch, not to mention the cost of that wire. That seems to be the biggest hurdle, if someone made them it could be a big business. Would be excellent if someone had a TOTAN they could pull the wiring off of and build a jig for each set.

I am assuming there is no other method of getting a wiring harness that will work? Or could you grab harnesses from other machines and modify to suit? I know one end (at the board) would at least have the right connectors and colors. Could you splice the playfield ends easier than building from scratch?

Yeah if somebody did wiring harnesses, that would be a pretty high demand business. I ended up grabbing a TOTAN and it’s actually much more of a simple parts machine compared to IJPBA. So doing it from scratch is possible except there are some unique parts going for a boat load and pretty sure you’d cross $20K. But it would be HEP at that point

cosmokramer could very well jump in on this and have the answers, or very close to the answer of cost.

#71 3 days ago

You could buy a used harness from another wpc95 donor and repin as schematic calls for
