What's he using for logic boards/etc for these conversions?
The TI-99/4A was my first back in '82. No disk drives(That was 1986). Yes, I used the cassette to load & save programs.
What would a modern-day EM from scratch machine be like? Something something Gottleib. No P-ROC, Aurdino, RPi, or any processors. With today's manufacturing abilities & wisdom from previous EM machines, it would be interesting to see.
No sound processors, so you will have to use the tech of a See & Say for soundbytes.
