I recently acquired a SS Bally Mata Hari from some one who had bought it sometime in the late 70's or early 80's who moved from the States to the UK in 1989 and had it rewired for 220v in the UK. He moved back to the states in 2000 with a supposed working pin that was never rewired for 120v and has sat unloved (and never plugged in) in a basement for the past 15 years. I'm good with playfield, cabinet, and backglass restoration, but I'm an idiot when it comes to the electrical side. I'm afraid that I don't have the money to hire someone to rewire and want to attempt to do the work by myself (with a little help from those willing to help).

At first glance the transformer wiring does not appear to look like either the 120v or 220v wiring diagrams. There seem to be several other wires soldered to the transformer. Do I leave these in place or do I remove all wires and only re solder according to 120v? Should I attempt to do this by myself or am I being stupid and should I let someone else assess what has been done to wire this machine for 220v? Thanks.

Looks like it was set for 240v. Just do what the manual says for 120v. The varistor should be changed as well.

1. Remove that jumper wire between terminals 3 & 5.

2. Install an 18 gauge jumper wire between terminals 1 & 3.

3. Connect the heavy red wire to terminal 1.

4. Install an 18 gauge jumper wire between terminals 5 & 7.

5. Connect the heavy yellow wire to terminal 5.

6. Install the correct AC power plug on the end of the power cord.

7. Turn on machine and play!

Kenlayton! thank you. Leaving out modifications to jumper wires, I essentially keep all wires as they currently are (leaving heavy red on 1) and move heavy yellow from 7 to 5 like so?

Thank you so much. What is a varistor, where is it located, and how do i get a new one?

Like i said, i am totally dense.

Yup, that's right.

Okay found the varistor location online... its connected in the lower cabinet to the power supply. Is this the right one to get? :

On another forum it was suggested that I use 60/40 resin core solder and 18 guage wire. A trip to my local Lowes yeilded only one kind of electrical solder (resin core with no mention of 60/40) and the only 18 guage wire they had was thermostat wiring consisting of 2 insulated wires that appear to be copper. I'm assuming I'll have to strip the wire and only use 1 strand. Is this the right equipment for the job or should I search a better Mom & Pop hardware store?

The wire is a solid core. It's going to be more difficult for you to work with and solder. Better to buy some 18 gauge stranded wire. Much easier to work with. If your town still has a Radio Shack they will have it.

While at Radio Shack, pickup some 60/40 rosin core solder. It's easier to work with and flows better (I've tried the stuff you have shown, and did not like it)

You can use 16awg. My Lowe's had 25ft stranded spools in all the primary colors. If you need 18,20, or 22 awg, I order those online--jameco seemed to have the best price for 100ft spools. Don't use solid core. It's harder to use and snaps easily.

I order solder online. You don't need flux if you get rosin core solder. Typically, I use .062" for lugs and .031" for board work. I'm currently using 60/40, but some folks recommend 63/37, which is supposed to solidify more quickly.

Don't use a cheap-o soldering iron. I use a Weller WES51 with a temperature adjustment.

Okay. After a year of laying dormant on this... I'm back at it. Had a friend help me solder the transformer last night. Looking for a local place to buy the varistor. Marco's specialties doesn't give any specs. Any idea what I'm looking for if I drive over to my local electronics store?

This worked by the way. Ordered the varistor and plug from PBresource. Took about an hour, since I had never done anything like this.
