Quoted from Pin_Fandango:

not sure what ribbing is, I do not know what I am looking at at the picture.

Ribbing or Graining is where the soft rings of the wood telegraph through the finish

Cratering is when there are not yet enough dimples to level out the field, so the sparse pattern of deep dents looks amazingly tragic

This playfield is 25 years old, and still has not yet leveled out behind the flippers:

Quoted from Pin_Fandango:

the lighting in my basement is anti dimpling, lol...

The games themselves had anti dimpling lighting - some of them only had 13 GI lamps from the factory

Quoted from pinballwil:

One thing for shure, Stern playfields are dimpling more than 99% percent from the 90's.

You are the expert, that's for sure

Sometimes you can tell who made a playfield, even before you see the logo....

Quoted from Kiwipinhead:

This operator has found out how to avoid pooling

Not only are posts missing allowing the balls to smash metal on metal, other metal posts are missing their rubbers - roughing up the balls further

Instead of tightening the screws to bed the ramp entrance below the wood surface, why not just put a piece of tape over the lip?

I'd love to see the balls themselves...lol

Quoted from Max_Badazz:

New populated LZ playfield arrived today. Easy to plug back in (three connectors and a cat5). Smooth like glass, not even a hair of a warp. Now to update the code and get back to playing it (I tried one game to make sure everything was working and its like a different game .... no more watching the ball curve into the outlanes LOL)

Nice!

You know we need pics of the unboxing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quoted from dts:

I figured thin fiber under the washer wouldn’t raise it too much. JJP used washers directly to the playfield on my last one, which seemed to work. This is an earlier run before that modification. If too high, will try the fiber alone.

Sand down the bottom of the post, removing as much material as the thickness of both washers combined.

120g sandpaper makes for very quick removal - so don't go too far.

Post are cheap, don't worry about cutting them down.

#8022 3 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

How about painting the washers black or to match the playfield, so you don’t see them?

For Pirates of the Caribbean, I'd want to drill through a gold doubloon instead of a washer

I mean, at least try to class the joint up a little....

Quoted from rotordave:

Washers look a bit ass though ... My JP (early run) came with washers factory, I cringe when I look at them.

For Guns N Roses, you could drill a hole in some guitar picks and not have it look so crappy

With the environment being a bigger concern and moving to water based crap

What company is making playfields with water based clear?

#8078 3 years ago

It might just be time to return to silkscreen playfields..... you remember, when the ink actually stuck to the wood.

#8080 3 years ago
Quoted from Haymaker:

I still believe this is the main problem despite a lot of people trying to say otherwise.

I mean, anyone can see that the ink has lifted away from the substrate on the majority of the digitaly printed problem playfields.

I have an inbox full of horrendous photos

#8085 3 years ago
Quoted from Syco54645:

so am i safe to order a JP Premium or should i just move on?

Use a credit card, that gives you 120 days to do a chargback when the ink starts lifting.

#8096 3 years ago
Quoted from Syco54645:

Wouldn't that hurt the distributor? Or is this a sort of fu to them when they don't help? I may just hold off and buy a nice used one...

No worries.

Nothing will happen to the distributor. They simply won't pay the invoice when it comes due.

#8097 3 years ago
Quoted from PanzerFreak:

Notes on Diamond Plate I found in a link from an old Pinside thread. Are the chemicals used in Diamond Plate now banned?
"Diamond Plate is a hardcoat for pinball playfields that was developed in the mid 1980ies by Sun Process.
Ken Fedesna, Vice President at Williams asked Sun Process to research if pinball playfields could be made more dureable. Their answer was Diamond Plate. This was based on Imron, an automotive 2-component urethane hardcoat developed by DuPont. There were minor changes to its formula and application (thickness, drying time, ..) so it could be applied to the wood of playfields."

Dupont still makes it, it is not illegal.

Quoted from Spyderturbo007:

I've been fighting with my distributor for almost 2 years and haven't gotten anywhere. I told them about the issue about 45 days after receiving the game. It's always "I'll check with Stern and get back to you". Then I wait a few weeks, email them again and I get the "I'll check with Stern and let you know".
I'm really pissed off and half tempted to throw them under the bus because they appear to have hung me out to dry. I've bought 3 games from them and would have bought a JP Premium shortly after they were released, but since no one has stepped up to fix my issue, I'm not buying shit.

This is the best lesson for everyone.

If you don't get your $9k game repaired before 90 or 120 days (depending on your credit card), you need to file your chargeback - fast.

Don't let them make excuses to stall, and thus run out the clock

#8126 2 years ago

The credit card companies give the seller a chance to arrange return shipping.

If they don't respond or make arrangements in a certain number of days, you get to keep the defective item.

#8127 2 years ago

I made a mistake, you only have 120 days to file chargeback on Discover, AE, MC or Visa,

Made of Alcoa Aircraft Aluminum, these VSMBKPWs are guaranteed to outlast the finish on your playfield.

Counter-bored recesses in two sizes allow both skinny and normal posts to be used without raising the rubber, avoiding ball bypass.

Pooling Purple

Chipping Copper

Gash Gold

Soilent Green

Peeling Pink

Black Schwarz

Botched Blau

Attractively priced at $7 each (5.8€), your $12,000 game is worth it!!!!

An inconvenient Truth:

Absolutely nothing will change until they find a new playfield supplier.

#8496 2 years ago
Quoted from jimwe5t:

Even then nothing will change until JJP changes their formula and factory install techniques. They have to stop printing art under posts and order far less clearcoat, as to be thinner, and change undercoat tech, which improves DTS printing.

That is not fixing the problem.

Removing the art from under the posts is just a band-aid that does nothing to fix the ink adhesion problem.

Real playfields are sometimes stored for years in unheated garages. Can you imagine what would happen if one of these playfields were exposed to freezing temperatures for a season???

Quoted from cpr9999:

Would like to hear Vid’s thoughts.

All of us guys who have been servicing pinball machines for 40 plus years know that those metal mini posts are always loose on games.

Every time you go out to a new clients place of business it is guaranteed those posts will be loose.

Often times the posts are really loose, because someone has put a #6 post into a #8 hole

So you always have to loc-tite them and make sure that the correct post is installed

Never in the tens of thousands of games that I have serviced, have I ever seen 25 mm of paint chip away around a loose post.

The loose post always wears a tiny ring the exact diameter of the post. It does not lift all the surrounding ink and clear off, lol

Doesn't matter if it's an OEM or a CPR playfield, the results are the same.

These games have had millions of balls run over them, and the metal posts are inches away from the flippers:

IMG_20210613_181140__01 (resized).jpgIMG_20210613_181140__01 (resized).jpgIMG_20210613_181243__01 (resized).jpgIMG_20210613_181243__01 (resized).jpg

Crap playfields can't even survive a few thousand balls, let alone millions

#8797 2 years ago
Quoted from cpr9999:

Of course I would certainly say the new digital printing/ clear coats are way different today.

Quoted from fatbeerdrinker:

Keep in mind your comparing the damage on a screen printed playfield to a digital one.

CPR has been making digitally printed playfields for ~3 years now.

I have not had a single customer tell me that the ink has been lifted off with the clear or pooled up around the posts.

CPR has not had to remove the artwork from around the posts.

CPR has not had to make their mini-post holes smaller.

CPR has not had to tell customers to put giant metal washers under the posts.

If there ever was an acid-test, it would have to be the Rolling Stones CPR playfield with the 2 posts directly in front of the flippers, right?

Quoted from thechakapakuni:

If you could replace a PF in 10 minutes we would be talking about how expensive pinball toppers are.

You can swap any populated playfield in 10 minutes.

#8804 2 years ago

Some of you experienced pinheads will remember when you'd get a warped playfield and the distributor would have populated replacement ready for you the next week.

They did not even want the old one back.

If they made a Christine pinball, would it just repair its self?[quoted image]

All the paint would flake off because it was incompatible with the primer.

#8852 2 years ago
Quoted from GeekedOnPinball:

I would like some feedback from the group. Is this normal?

Yes it's normal (for a micro playfield)

The ink is not bonded to the substrate, and has now been lifted off by the clearcoat.

You need a new playfield. ☹

#8898 2 years ago
Quoted from Vespula:

, we could all accept responsibility for putting it together properly ourselves and save thousands.

You would still need to acquire a real playfield.

Maybe Outside Edge could do a Hardtop?

#8902 2 years ago
Quoted from Bublehead:

I can't wait to see the assembly instructions.

I've got the first few pages already
