You are the reason Redbox can exist. I would love to know the average rental charge Redbox brings in.
This thread made me think of Apple. It's been recently discovered that they purposely slowed down their older cell phones so their users would be forced to upgrade to newer ones.

Talk about consumer ripoff...
Quoted from Mike_J:Are really talking about a $1.98 rental?
What is the actual cost?
We are talking about principles and practices businesses are using to take more money or give you less product and not being upfront about it.
Quoted from Bud:You are missing the point. I know I can YouTube, I know I can buy used disc, and the tons of other sources to get the info I was expecting. The whole point of this is simple and a matter of principle. If a product is sold/used/rented etc. the distributor should be upfront about the products quality/quantity/or any lack of, especially when an "upgrade charge" is applied and the features are the upgrade aren't included. Sooooo, what was the upgrade in this case and why was I charged extra?
You were charged extra (what, 50 cents?) to enjoy the 1080p version of the film. It's always been that way with Redbox. You pay more for the exponentially better picture quality... just as you pay even more to buy a UHD disc which has higher resolution (but, more importantly, wide color gamut and high dynamic range) in a retail setting. It's really as simple as that. You weren't taken for a ride, you saw the BD version of the flick. If you want the extras, you have to buy the flick or go online and watch it for free.
I'm fairly sure you wouldn't have access to the extras via a significantly more expensive iTunes rental.
Quoted from Mike_J:Are really talking about a $1.98 rental?

Blurays are $2, DVDs are $1.50
You know, in a year or so all these red boxes are gonna go the way of the iPod and cheapskates ain’t gonna have to worry about deceptively being screwed out of 48 cents when they rent a dvd of police academy 2.
We are nothing more today than a nation of CONSUMERS!! Here to keep the company's growing and taking more of our money!!
Look at how the drugs today just keep people living older, to buy more stuff and keep the company's growing bigger!
Sound familiar?
Ever seen the movie "THE MATRIX"? Think about it.........................
Quoted from vid1900:Blurays are $2, DVDs are $1.50
Thanks, I really didn't know.
I only found out what Redbox was in the last 24 hours.
Quoted from Buzz:Anybody ever see a little unknown film called "1984" ????
Lol
I think it was a book first?
The movie is comparatively unknown.
Quoted from Buzz:Anybody ever see a little unknown film called "1984" ????
Nope, but if I do I won't rent it from Redbox. Hahahaha
Quoted from CrazyLevi:You know, in a year or so all these red boxes are gonna go the way of the iPod
iPods are all the rage with kids again.
Kids are replacing the old iPod hardrives with SD memory cards, and are now having a gig of FLAC storage on a 15 year old pod. No phone can give you that lovely 30 hours of playback battery life.
And even though phones are banned from school hours, the iPod slinks through the metal detectors unconfiscated .
Alright just nobody tell me that the price of Pins is going up. Because if that was the case I would go crazy. Could you imagine if the price of pins started going up and the amount of features implemented gets fewer?
Naaaa. Never Happen. That's crazy talk.
Quoted from John_I:People actually watch the extras on the Blu-ray? That is news to me; I just watch the movie.
Uh... yeah... that's why they put them on the discs.

That’s nice. Regardless, this week Apple
Stopped selling old-fashioned iPods. They are officially a thing of the past.
Like dvds in about a month.
Quoted from ASOA:Could you imagine if the price of pins started going up and the amount of features implemented gets fewer?
They come incomplete already and then you're going to add in fewer features too! Wow that would be a deal, think about it, incomplete code, fewer toys (unless you order the LE), thank god you still have the incomplete code should you go that route.
I remember my brother going off on a rant a few years back when Stella Artois beer changed their bottle size from 12oz to 11.2 oz.
"God damnit, that's .8 oz X 24=19.2 oz or 1-1/2bottles per case less and the price is still the SAME!!!"

Nope, they are going to replace service rails with pegs, make cheaper boards, move power switches to save cost, make plastic aprons........

Just the Nano and the Shuffle were discontinued.
Regular iPod is still made, and they recently doubled the memory, for the same price.
Apple sold 4 million iPods in 2017, so it's safe to say it's still a product in demand.
(but if I were you, I'd buy a used HD model and put some SD cards in it.....)

Regular iPod is now just an iPhone without a phone. Exact same thing except you can’t make cellular calls.
The kids can’t get that into school!!! The traditional iPod is dead.
I haven’t owned an iPod in 10 years. Just another thing to carry around and it’s already in my phone. I’m listening to it right now! It’s sweet.

Of course they can

The only phone that can exceed the iPod for SQ is the LG V20.
But, the V20 only has 6.5 hours of audio playback on a full charge.
-
It's like saying a phone is a guitar tuner. A phone can tune a guitar, but it's garbage compared to a dedicated tuner.
What really pissed me off was when some of the ice cream makers transitioned real ice cream to 'frozen dessert'.... Tastes like garbage and forms into a chemical glob because it doesn't melt. Nasty stuff.

I’m looking forward to arguing about this thing neither of us cares about till the end of time.
You vidsplained that Kids can’t take an iPhone into school. That’s what an iPod is now. The fact that it has no cellular component is no issue.
Since you are down with the kids, you probably know that you can make phone calls with what they now call an iPod. You can text with it. You can FaceTime.
Allow me to Vidsplain for you:
If schools won’t allow you to bring your iPhone, they won’t allow you to bring your “iPod,” which - now that all of the traditional, ACTUAL iPods have been discontinued as of this week since there is virtually no market for them, is the same thing as an iPhone.
Trust me. I’m hip. I know the kids. We cool. We cool.
Quoted from CrazyLevi:You vidsplained that Kids can’t take an iPhone into school. That’s what an iPod is now. The fact that it has no cellular component is no issue.
You really don't know the difference between an iPhone and an iPod ?
If it says **IPOD** on the back of the case, you can bring it into school.
It is considered a "personal entertainment device" like the Switch, and is allowed.
Quoted from CrazyLevi:I know the kids.
If you are really down with kids, then you should make some iPhone backs that would disguise it as an iPod.
That would make you some friends....
Quoted from 27dnast:To the OP: this is nothing new. For the last few years a couple of movie houses have been featuring discs with lesser audio encodes through Redbox.
This one drive me crazy. Many blu ray disc rentals (Netflix, too) only have Dolby digital, offering DTS or higher (DTS-MA or TrueHD, Atmos, etc.) only on retail discs. Of course, retail discs often have various copy protection schemes complicating either legal or reasonable backing up.
Gotta love this stuff. I tell my wife about things like this all the time, then she gets mad at me, saying its "conspiracy theory" talk. Then, like clock work, within a couple days she will complain about something, like the iphone slowing down, and the article comes out, and I say "see, I told you so!" The cycle never ends, and I end up being right ever time.

A zizzle is called a “pinball machine” but come on man, we all KNOW it isn’t a Pinball machine!
If I put an iPod back on the back of my iPhone - it’ll fit - does that in fact make it an iPhone?
It’s a strange world we live in. Lots of ins and outs. Just because “they” want you to think it’s an iPod, doesn’t mean it is. I mean come on, we know what an iPod is.
You seem to be losing your enthusiasm for this. But look, I’ve decided this is very important and I’m never giving it up. And since you’ve never given up on one of these pointless arguments, ever, I guess we should all just settle in.
I’m getting lots of pms of support here. We all know the real iPod is a thing of the past, like plasma screen TVs.
Vid: “well, actually, there is a small lab in Taiwan producing 2 plasma screen displays a year to satisfy a 20-year service contract with the Uruguayan government....also teenagers these days are really into plasma because they are creating burn-in art blah blah blah blah...”

So much a thing of the past, that Pioneer, Onkyo, Colorfly, Chord, Astell & Kern, FiiO, Sony, Apple, HiFiMan, and of course Xiaomi have all come out with new portable music players in the past year.
There are over 7 billion cell phones in the world, yet the demand for high quality portable audio continues.....
......but you already knew that, smart guy like you.

Yep...and I bought one of those. I like my music separate from my phone and in the FLAC format.
I lost interest, but this thread brought me back in when I was educated about getting rid of my old iPods hard drive for sd memory.... headed to research now.
This is a good article on the remaining market for DAPs. Check the comment section for lots of ZUNE diehards if you can believe it.
https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2017/3/27/15072550/digital-audio-player-pioneer-onkyo-why
Can't imagine not using Spotify anymore, it takes away all the work of acquiring, managing, transferring music on top of providing access to almost anything for what used to be the cost of a single CD a month. The value/effort proposition is astounding.
I still have a first generation Zune kicking around. I always liked that device--it worked pretty well. I haven't used it in years, though--not since I started using a smart phone.
Quoted from westofrome:Can't imagine not using Spotify anymore
About 2/3 of all those new players I showed above can run Spotify.
But Spotify is only a **convenience** app, it does not play back anything with quality. (even when you choose HQ in the settings, it no better than a mp3).
If mp3s are good enough for someone, they might want to get the hacked Pandora client from the Bay. It's free, has no commercials, and whenever you give a "thumbs up" to a track, it automatically saves it to your SD Card as a mp3.
So instead of a virtual library that you lose if you cancel the service, you get a real mp3 library that you can share with friends, copy to your ancient iPod, email to grandma....
Quoted from westofrome:This is a good article on the remaining market for DAPs.
It's not even an article.
The author copied a bunch of specs from the manufacturers, but did not do any actual research.
He admits he's not seen any portable music players in 5 years, and clearly did not listen to either of the 2 he mentioned.
He throws around lots of terms like MQA, but never explains what they are to the reader (because he does not know).
He says they can use Tidal streaming, but does not explain how it is different than every other service.
Sheesh........you could learn more about portable audio by reading a pinball forum....
Quoted from vid1900:Sheesh........you could learn more about portable audio by reading a pinball forum....
I have an iPod for the gym. Recently bought a 5, and it SUCKS. Only the album artwork that I bought from Apple displays. Since most of my 60gb is from my cd collection, that's a lot of blank spaces. Plus the navigation is shit. Hate having to hit 5 buttons for what used to be intuitively linear. Any ideas on artwork Vid? I've tried everything. Going back to 4.
I have to admit that this thread is an education for me.
I have no experience with anything being discussed save for a smart phone.
Quoted from Electrocute:a bad habit of not returning the movies and wind up
NO, no, no, no, no,
you aren't required to wind them any more.
That's one of the big improvements. : )
