I have an issue on my SM$M where it emits a constant tone after I turn it on and it enters attract mode. Then, when I start a game, the tones work normally until I lose the ball, that's when a constant tone starts up again until I launch the next ball and get some scoring going on. Any troubleshooting tips appreciated.

The sound board has a sustain circuit that melodies use to smooth note transistion. Your problem is the sustain circuit is not fading those tones out.
Check the sustain pot on the sound board - typically optimum setting is between 11 - 12 o' clock on the dial.
Put the game in sound test mode and tweak the pot.

Ok thanks, I will give this a try. I already have tried once, but I’ll do it again

I checked and found the sustain pot was a bit to high, so I adjusted it back to between 11-12 and now that corrected the constant tone. That’s the good news. Bad news is that even though the volume pot is all the way up, the overall volume level is too low. Any ideas?

Post a picture of the board.
Has the LM741 at U9 ever been replaced? Not all LM741 are equal and non-original National Semiconductor parts cause low volume. This is actually a board design issue and there's an update to fix it. Lets see the board first.
