I think it's probably more of a surge issue than a waveform issue. PC's are much more stead-state loads. Pinball machines have huge current surges...whenever a coil fires. I'll bet you get a minibrownout whenever you hit the flipper button - the UPS cannot maintain the voltage during the surge.

Nah. The surge has to go thru the inverter section of the UPS -- I would guess it is this section that can't handle the surges. I think the surge time period would be too large and adding caps the the Pin's power section won't bridge it. Plus, adding much higher value of caps adds to the 120Hz surge currents through the bridge rectifiers.
