I'm not typically a huge soccer fan, but I always enjoy watching the World Cup games. Especially the Women's Cup as the US team is always in the thick of it.

Congratulations to the US Women on another outstanding tournament and repeating as true world champions!

Awesome. Great job ladies! Inspiring on and off the pitch!!!

Now how about some pay equity in the World Cup? It’s getting embarrassing.

With a handle like that how could you not be into woman's soccer.

Woohoo! It was an exciting match too!

Yes I enjoy watching some of the world’s greatest athletes making the USA proud in front of the entire world by dominating the world’s most popular sport. A true dynasty!

    Amazing.

Puts hand up...watched for all the wrong reasons..

    #8 8 days ago

All poor humor aside. Yes it was an amazing accomplishment and maybe one day all people can be equal in the way they get treated. Strong team and good roll models.

Congrats to the USA, not to the actions of some of the players

Then again, that’s what they do to get the attention they crave

I thought FIFA was a bunch of Euro socialists?

Def part of the elitist most CORRUPT body in sports

The women get 60 million versus 440 million to the men

I'm going to have to call my buddy in Amsterdam and give him shit.
He's always going off on a tangent about Dutch women being better than American women.

Rumor has it a NYC victory parade this week?

Should I blow off work to go check it out with my babe?

Man I haven't worked a full week this summer. HEading to New Orleans to see the Stones among other things on Friday as well.

    @wikerman
    They just can't help themselves.

Go team USA and give 'em hell Rapino! I still can't believe the FIFA dolts scheduled concacaf the same day as the WC.

Here is an interesting article that explains the pay difference compared to the revenue coming in. The revenue difference was many, many times greater than I would have guessed.

    No it’s completely different actually.

I’d tell you to look into it but that would be pretty pointless I’m sure.

I’ll put it in terms you may be able to grasp - women’s soccer is making a shitload of money for a shitload of people.

    How so?

Men get paid more because they bring in the "revenues" from ticket sales, sponsors, merchandise and everything related.

    It's never gonna change.

Choose tennis or golf if you want to close the pay gap.

    #19 8 days ago

    Or....

    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/06/19/us-womens-soccer-games-now-generate-more-revenue-than-mens.html

U.S. women’s soccer games have generated more revenue than U.S. men’s games over the past three years.

That’s according to audited financial statements from the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) obtained by The Wall Street Journal. In 2016, women’s games generated $1.9 million more in revenue than men’s games. From 2016 to 2018, women’s games generated approximately $50.8 million in revenue, compared with $49.9 million for men’s games.

The Journal report notes that the “ability of the women’s team to generate gate revenues that equals or exceeds the men’s team is an important battleground,” and central to an ongoing lawsuit filed against the USSF by 28 members of the U.S. women’s national soccer team in March.

I’d love to see a list of things you said were “never gonna change” over the past 30 years or so and see how accurate it was.

So what, we are talking about FIFA here where soccer matters worldwide and is HUGE money.

Messi and Ronaldo each make $100 million a year.

    Nobody cares about "US soccer"

LOL, well there are just certain physical limitations that will never change and thus make things like men's basketball, football and soccer pretty much a given to "never change".

There is "reality" and then there is "fantasy land".

    Were the Roman gladiators women?

    #25 8 days ago

I think that may change in 20 years. Every weekend the fields are packed with little people kicking a ball. Definitely was not a sport of my generation. But it definitely seems to be gaining momentum these days.

Fields were packed 15 years ago too when my kids were growing up and playing Ymca soccer.

Soccer is a boring F ing sport to top it off Buzz!

    #27 8 days ago

I don't think it was as big then as it is now personally. To me it's boring but so is every sport except hockey and football.

Maybe the men should play the women and the winner gets paid more? Settle it on the field. Can’t get any more equal than that, right?

    Quoted from Blitzburgh99:

Maybe the men should play the women and the winner gets paid more? Settle it on the field. Can’t get any more equal than that, right?

    Didn’t we already settle this?

Billie Jean King could kick your ass!

But on the real, if you want to approach this in such a dumb manner, wouldn’t it make more sense to do it thusly:

Would you agree the US women’s soccer team are about 10X better at their jobs than the men? Shouldn’t they be paid much more instead of much less?

We are talking about fairness here!

    #30 8 days ago

I don’t know the economics of sports to say who should be paid what....but if I were a corporate executive, the best way to level the income gap is to lower all the men’s salaries down to women’s salaries.

I don’t know the economics of sports to say who should be paid what....but if I were a corporate executive, the best way to level the income gap is to lower all the men’s salaries down to women’s salaries.

Can you repeat that in English please?

    #32 8 days ago

if society wants all salaries to be equal, it’s impossible to raise them all up, so lower the high ones all down.

    #33 8 days ago

More money is spent on men's sports and they bring in more revenue.

This always leads to better success in the field.

It's why the Texas Longhorns win 10 or 11 games every year and are always in the national championship conversation with Alabama and Clemson.

    #34 8 days ago

The pay should be based on the revenue earned. Simple as that.

If the facts are showing women soccer is bringing in more money than men soccer then the pay should be revisited as well.

I'll be the first to say I have no idea how the revenue of men vs women is for soccer but I would want multiple sources to corroborate...not just the left wing media....

Glad to have you on board!

Rapinoe has given her team and womens soccer a black eye and has set the sport back into the stone age! She should be ashamed of herself!

Step1: Open a thread to congratulate the USA for winning on a big stage -- a big moment in time...
Step2: A few people find something to bitch about that has nothing to do with how well the team prepared and played this tournament compared to the competition...
Step3: Inject your stain onto what should ideally be a fun and celebratory thread...

The women's team had superior passing and ball control in each and every match... This was a blowout today... USA !!!

I agree with you mof....however, it is the star players that have made the focus into off field issues, so the conversation is going to go into those directions.

I follow soccer closely...love the World Cup men’s and womens. Looking forward to a classic Mexico vs USA men’s Gold Cup championship in the next hour or so. I was tremendously disappointed to pick up today’s Sunday paper when I went to read the game’s preview story.

There was nothing about the Rapinoe hamstring issue..was she going to start? Or would it be Morgan Press? Who are the top stars to watch for the Netherlands? How is their goalie? What were the roads to the title game for each team? Coaches and any title game experience? You know....stuff that affects the actual game to be played.

Instead, here is a snapshot of the only article printed in the Houston Chronicle today. A article on brandy chastain taking off her shirt 20 years ago in winning celebration, and how women athletes are sexualized in the media. Seems pretty counterproductive, doesn’t it?

Kneeling during the national anthem is disgusting enough, doing it while wearing the USA uniform is disgraceful.

Now i respect her right to do it, but i have to disagree with you here, a "true patriot" she is NOT. I don't care what kind of lame F ing excuse these self righteous over paid fantasy land athletes come up with these days.

Now the basketball team BLOWS and will as long as Smart is there. For reference on how to do it right see Texas Tech.

Ice ... ice ... ice. I like you man. Who-Dey too. You're both good pindudes.

We all know what the political common denominator is within this discussion. Let's not go there. Pinside doesn't allow it and we're not going to agree.

I'm going to leave it at that and instead appeal to you to celebrate our national team's WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. Something that we can all be proud of!
