The problem is that the average untrained ear can't tell the difference. They've become used to lossy compressed digital mp3 formats and are fine with the sound quality. The ability to cram 1000 songs on a jump drive won out over high quality audio formats. I think there will always be a small minority of younger folks who will appreciate high end audio much as there will be some who appreciate a real pinball game over an online video game but I doubt it will ever become mainstream again.
