Just got a package from Comet. Lot's of great stuff I can't wait to get to install to my TS. One problem though: I ordered a bunch of post lights but now that test them with my posts I see that the lights don't fit into these posts. The hollow space diameter for the lights should be something like 13.8mm but my posts only have 12.4mm space in them.

Where could I find compatible posts? Or are posts usually compatible and I just happen to have some non-stardard ones?

#52 7 years ago

I have probably bought a thousand or so bulbs from Art and Comet this year.
Everything has looked and performed amazingly well.
Art is a stand up businessman who cares about his products and his customers.

I am about to change over my JM, as I have decided to give up the dimming effects in favor of an overall brighter experience.

I am including some photos of my games that now have Comet bulbs in them.

I really like the star lens bulbs from comet, spreads the light nicely. My only complaint is the yellow bulbs look a little too orange.

Indeed, there are many different types of posts in the myriad of games and time.
We replaced our posts, with standard ones from Marco Specialties, and Id imagine they are the same from PBL, and others.
They fit right inside, and for some needs, some have dremeled a small notch for the wires, but most times this is not needed.

New posts also will make the lights that much brighter and Better! I did Purple posts in my Shadow.....But all colors glow sweetly!

Yes, the yellow color, inherently in the visible light spectrum, our eyes, and a powder doped diode.

So when they are made "yellow" people complain they are "too light in color"
to make them darker, they will lean towards orange.

So, its taste great, less filling, less bright or towards orange.
The answer is to depend on the insert for the color, and if the plastic and bulb is not the hue you wish, change to warm white.
For GI, or above the playfield, you can go clear, and get more "yellow" but it will be half as bright as most people want.

No exact answer that solves the need of "bright yellow" other then yellow capped lens, with a warm white Diode, for GI.
The bulb itself will look the right color, but still the distance spread of yellow will be diminished due to the surrounding white,
and our eyes in the light spectrum

These unsuitable posts of mine are from Ministry of Pinball (Netherlands) just from couple of months back.

I'll try other ones from Marco. I was anyway thinking that this original red color might not be optimal for this illumination purpose.

Have been a loyal customer of Arts for quite a while, always a gentleman to deal with.
Hey Art before you retire please make this bulb in a flex ! The single flex just is not working for me!
All the best!

My apologies that I am not aware of their product specifically, but if you wish to post or send a link, Id like to see this for myself as well.

Standard Williams Posts should be uniform across all vendors globally......very curious to learn to!

Oh, Flame Bulbs in 44/47 are in and matrix #555 Sockets too!

I just bought a bunch of LEDs from Comet for my JP I recently bought and they are amazing! I did get a few red frosted 44s when I had ordered unfrosted, but I'm not worried about it because they were used for inserts so you can't even tell. I am new to LED-ing a game so still learning. For example, yellow LEDs with yellow inserts don't go very well together. I've found that white LEDs go better in yellow inserts. I should have ordered some warm whites as well just to see how those look, whether it be inserts or GIs. I'll probably place another order soon anyways because I forgot the DMD glare eliminator from my first order. Definitely doing business again with Comet.

I'd like to thank OLDPINGUY for the terrific service he is doing for pinball, and for the terrific product. Saying I will be ordering again soon from him after only one order a few days ago should say a lot about his products and service.

Yep, yellow is the hardest color to match.

It was this set of posts: http://www.ministryofpinball.com/en/game-specific-items/bally/the-shadow/the-shadow-starpost-set.html

But I already visited Marco's, ordered purples and blues. Let's see after "2-3 weeks"...

#64 7 years ago

Oh Boy, I want to make sure Im helping you correctly.

The Post lights you purchased are designed to sit flat under the post, not the smaller kind, with dimmer lights, that fit inside the post.
These posts in the link appear to be the same....were you looking for ones that are inside the post and not at the bottom?

No, I was looking for lights that are flat under the post. My assumption was that smd leds itself would fit inside the post. Which they don't with these posts in the link above. I'm not even aware of any post lights that go inside the post altogether.

Is this Marco post suitable for the Comet post light: http://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/03-8319-18 ?

I think you mean like these?
http://www.pinballlife.com/index.php?p=product&id=1995

#67 7 years ago

Yes, these I already got: http://www.cometpinball.com/4-SMD-6-3V-LIGHTED-POST-LIGHT-p/mtxpost.htm

I assume both of these products are meant to fit similarly under a star post. If just the said post is spacey enough.

#68 7 years ago

Ill have to try to research for you.

I have all the different post lights, and only one fits inside the post, and not below. The problem with them is they arent very
bright at all. Flex heads in the GI or OpMax, will have the posts glow almost the same without the work and expense.
Now, i havent tried all the colors, and all teh combinations from other vendors...just a couple samples, but Im happy to recheck.

It may take a few days, as they are packed, and I am retiring in 2 days, but I will check.

The posts from Ministry and Marco are the same. You are looking for a different Post light, in this case.

Its from one of these:

Pinballlife, Cointaker, Pinballcenter.eu and Great Lakes Modular.

http://www.greatlakesmodular.com/

http://www.pinball.center/en/search?sSearch=post+lights

http://cointaker.com/products/post-light-leds

http://www.pinballlife.com/index.php?p=product&id=1995

It appears all vendors are using the newer, bases, rather then board, which is the sample I have.
This sample is a couple years old, and each post had to be notched.

I have heard from customers who "sharpied" or painted them to make less visible, and I have heard, like in
the getaway thread, I believe where people had posts that fit better, and notched to hide more of the wires.
Perhaps someone has posted on how to make them fit in the manner that you wish.

Perhaps some of the threads based on a search like this might have some additional info, or start a thread on
this, as if it is important to you, it might be for others, and since several vendors offer, it would help everyone.

Other answers might come from that post.

Art, congrats on the retirement. I take it you must have had a buyer. Hopefully we'll hear all about it soon. You have been awesome to deal with the few times I have had the opportunity to order from you.

You don't need to give up the dimming effects with the LEDs - get an LED OCD. I put LEDs into my JM and actually missed the GI dimming. I ordered and installed (easy) an LED OCD and got the dimming back. They custom programmed one and built custom cables for the controlled lights of my Black Knight that I have a set of Comet LEDs going into. Highly recommended!

They are?

The Capcom ones are out of stock while I get feedback on the first batch, but everything else is in stock, and nothing is discontinued.

On first read, it sounded like the System 7 install went fine, but then I saw "going into". So that others can follow along, I modified a set of cables from a System 11 kit for Gogojohnnyquack to test in his Black Knight (System 7). This will be the first attempt at anything earlier than System 9.

I have 2 clear inserts that I am trying to get colored as yellow. I installed Comets' 2 smd yellow lamps and the look is more like orange. Who makes a true yellow LED? or referring to the capped lens above, where do I get those and can I "cap" a warm white lamp and use it in my inserts to get a better looking correct yellow color. Thanks!

Most folks end up using natural white or warm white under yellow inserts.

#82 7 years ago

Yeah, yellow is really hard to do. In fact, even if you were color matching, we don't recommend using yellow (because, as you mentioned, they're a bit orange). I'm not sure anyone has a good solution to this at the moment...

I was trying the exact same thing yesterday. I put green, yellow, and orange bulbs into the fuel gauge inserts on my MET. Yellow looks almost exactly the same as orange. I know there was a mod to put colored lenses under the inserts. Probably have to do something like that.

How do the flame bulbs work? Do they cycle through the 4 LEDs? Do they pulsate In intensity?

#85 7 years ago

I know Mezel makes the gel insert mod for some of the fuel gauge inserts. Does anybody know what material this is, probably yellow silicon, but where I can get some to just make my own? The inserts I am trying to get yellow are the 2 amp suite clear inserts on my Avatar pro behind the drop down target assembly. The amp suite mode has yellow associated with this mode and I want to match those inserts to yellow, not clear. Thanks guys.

#86 7 years ago

Going to be tough.

The request is for a yellow bulb, that is light in color, yet bright enough to turn a white insert a light yellow.

An Optix Bulb, gives off a very nice yellow hue, and is designed for inserts, and Id try that or a 4 SMD, even a 1 Watt.
If either of those are too dark in color, or night bright enough, a gel is the next step.
Every yellow bulb that is a doped diode, will have different hue, but a COB (1 Watt Magnum) and a Piranha Superflux (an Optix)
are different fabrications.

Much like the work done on Purple....A Dark color bright, this request is for a light hue in the spectrum, to be light in color, and
bright in intensity. Its tricky, and doesnt always work, but I have been happy with an Optix yellow when in the same situation.

I cant say how you personally will find the hue of yellow from this bulb, but have not found any other way.
(It doesnt mean their arent any lighter yellow, or a different solution, just that doped diodes with either be light yellow, and then not bright enough)

Quoted from dothedoo:

How do the flame bulbs work? Do they cycle through the 4 LEDs? Do they pulsate In intensity?

There is a video, and these cycle through red, Amber, and warm white, while keeping one red always lit.
2 Bulbs in the same use, create the best illusion, so they arent "in sync"

If you are looking for a fire creation that varies in intensity, I dont believe they can fit that all in one bulb base, so this would likely be a board based solution.

Some hand made ones have been made in the past that will give a programmed degree of intensity change and randomness, and because of production costs in small numbers, Id expect a $10-$25 product could be made to achieve your needs.

This bulb does a nice job in a backbox art situation, or in a MOD, but likely isnt the "Perfect" Solution for everyones needs, imagination, or interpretation of fire and explosion. Worth trying, very affordable, but when I was testing many friends were pleased,
others wanted the bulb to have a programmed display.

#87 7 years ago

If you are wanting to test gel colors without spending much money, have the colors printed to transparency paper with a color laser printer at some place like Staples. You can layer different colors and color strengths to get the shade you want.

This is what I did to color correct my camera flash to match the rest of the ambient lighting. Blue and green for flouescents, yellow and orange for incadescent, etc.

I would try a cool white bulb with gels of yellow and orange to take the blue tones back down vs a warm white led with blue and green gels to kill the orange tones. That way if you happen to see the gels through the insert they are closer to the color you want.

Here are some examples from Lee Filters on using colored gels with cool white leds to get the desired color output: http://www.leefilters.com/lighting/led-02.html

I have ordered many hundreds of LEDs from Comet, but I am still an incandescent lover. In the old days we had colored bulbs and we had colored bulb condoms. Can't you put one on a bright white LED?

#89 7 years ago

Sill hoping that comet can make the 4smd in a flex in both 44/47 and 555 ... I'm a heavy user of this bulb and when I need to use these in a horizontal application the single and double flex do not keep the same consistency !

Quoted from Taxman:

You could do the same on an LED. I like the color from the LEDs better than the condoms or the colored glass bulbs. The main difference is when the bulb is off, the condom or colored glass bulbs remain that color, but I can't think of an application where that makes a difference.

#91 7 years ago

I think the condom is the answer you're looking for when it comes to yellow; that's just a very difficult hue to get "right" (and then who's defining "right?") when it comes to LEDs.

If I have an insert that is yellow I prefer warm white since the color balance contains less blue spectrum, which will tend to lighten the insert color too much for my taste. For *most* inserts I prefer "natural" white, but not for yellow ones. On the other hand IMHO natural white looks garish in GI use and I'd actually like "warmer white" than the usual "warm" color temperature that is available, as incandescents are typically underdriven a bit in GI use and thus tend toward a warmer temperature in use than their spec states.

#92 7 years ago

Use a white bulb and get a color set of sharpies; color it until you get the right yellow.

pasted_image_(resized).pngpasted_image_(resized).png

sharpies_(resized).jpgsharpies_(resized).jpg

#93 7 years ago

That unfortunately is not reversible but would probably work.

#94 7 years ago

Getting the sharpie method to be even across the entire emitting face of the LED could be a bit of a challenge too.

Well i just placed my first order since comet changed hands. Placing it was just as easy as it was before, but i must say, the confirmation email made me happy i spent my money on their company! To answer your question, these bulbs along with a stock of comet bulbs i already have, are going in a class of 1812, data east time machine, data east simpsons, roller games, and strange science. I just finished doing a rocky and bullwinkle with a mixture of 2 diode clear bulbs on g.i. under the plastics, frosted single diode clear for the g.i. that can be seen, and 2 diode color matched to the inserts. Looks amazing! Those pics are before i did the inserts. Thanks comet!
