Yes!! I finally got my comet after all these years of trying. This was my first pinball machine I played when I was a kid and I would spend days playing it in the summer months. It looks great, but it does have some planking on the playfield. Luckily most of it is under Mylar. Are there any suggestions for fixing/preserving the planking areas that are not covered in Mylar?

Yep and I have the original stock as well.

Thanks. I got lucky and the previous owner already replaced both ramps and installed new display boards. There’s no wear luckily, but I can see the planking becoming an issue on the non Mylar areas in the future. Wow, the new hardtop looks great! I might end up doing that down the road as I don’t see this leaving my collection.

Ouch! What happened?

I’m finally going to try to get my comet working again. It was working prior to moving to another state (GI lights up, but doesn’t start up) so I’m hoping it’s just a loose connection somewhere.. here’s to wishful thinking.

Quoted from Philly76:

Is it in test or program mode? Are the flippers activated right as you power up?

Finally got it to work today after putting it off for awhile. Not sure what the issue was (flippers would not work and the gi would only light up). I ended up reseating all of the pin connectors and basically fiddled around until it finally booted up. Now I just need to figure out why 3/4 of my backbox lights and million points lights behind the jumper ramp don’t work, but I’ll save that for another day.

Question regarding the hardtops. Do you think it will help or hurt the value? My playfield has some planking and is covered with Mylar to protect it so I’m strongly considering biting the bullet and buying one.

Planking is not as bad as I’ve seen on other machines (have the mylar covering 2/3rds of it as well), but I’m sure it will get worse over time.

Tried to do a search, but didn’t have much luck. Running into an issue that hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Game has been working fine, but the other day the GI would light up and wouldn’t boot. Tested the fuses and reset the pins. After searching around more I noticed the connector on 3J9 was hot so I unplugged it and yep it was burnt to a crisp.

Does anyone know where I can find a replacement connector pin set? I have the part number (connector, 2 pin (H) 579-09436-00), but can’t seem to find something similar to it online.

Also, do you think there might be an underlying issue that caused the pin to get burned out that I need to look into? I’m not an expert on these types of issues unfortunately.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks! I’ve had this game for a long time with no issue so do you think it would be best to get a new board as well?

#1655 1 year ago
Quoted from midcoastsurf:

Are you capable of basic board work? If the rest of the board is good and you are up for a project, I would consider rebuilding the board (at a minimum, replace capacitors. You could also do header pins, connectors that go to the header pins, and any other bulletproof mods for this board. Search System 9 bulletproofing.)
For this specific burned connector situation, depending how bad the burn is on the board I would remove the connector on the board and solder two thick wires that go to a new molex a few inches off the board. I would then re-pin the wires going to that connector with a new connector. Always make sure you are replacing both header pins and corresponding connectors to reduce heat buildup.
Alternative is a new board, but you'd still want to re-do your connectors that plug into the new board IMO.

I have a basic understanding of board work, but not much experience doing it. I guess I can try it and if it doesn’t work then I can buy a new board. Would like to keep everything as original as possible if I can help it though. Thanks for the tips/suggestions everyone.
