Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:From me before PPS told me I couldn't make them anymore.
Wow, that's a shame. Your cards are top notch. Glad I got my set for my Comet when I did!
Quoted from panthera:Hi, I just installed my PinScore and found this ... bug? I traced out the schematics which seem to be:
comma 1+2: CPU board C54 to connector 1J3-10 to 10749 connector 4J10-10
comma 3+4: CPU board C55 to connector 1J3-11 to 10749 connector 4J10-11
I metered both lines out and they go to the correct places. I guess I could try switching them. Has anyone tried or been successful in fixing this?
FYI, if anyone runs into this, just swap the wires on 4J10-10 and 4J10-11, commas work like a champ after that!

Thanks! I'll give that a try and report back. The game is at my mom's, so I might take a bit.

That did the trick, thanks again! Now just need to pick up a couple ribbon cables to take care of some ghosting.
Does anyone know who sells a replacement lockdown bar receiver that fits Comet? Mine is shitty. The one pinballlife sells (below) fit my sys 11 Pinbot like a glove, but they are not sure it will fit sys 9. Maybe not.

I can tell you that System 9 and 11 are different, but only by the location of the mounting holes.
Quoted from dmieczko:Mine does not have "COMET" below the door. I think that's pretty rare.
Mine has Comet below the coin door, but no fireballs/flames on each side. Maybe they were painted over?
DC1EB48C-DE5E-41BA-A84A-ABFC2C121FFB (resized).jpegFirst Pin picked up a Comet two weeks ago so far love the game. And have done a few fixes already.
First I had a light not working found diode was in backwards wonder if this light never worked? looked to have all the same numbers as other diodes just installed backwards flipped it and the light now works.
Also had a burnt TIP122 that i fixed. robbed Q85 to replace Q83 and replaced the coil and all is back to working.
couple of questions
1. where can i get the "1 Million sign" at the back of the cycle ramp mine is competently missing. There is one on Ebay but its missing the housing that covers the bulbs. anyone have a spare that they are willing to part with?
2. anyone ever order the translite form EBay ebay.com link: WILLIAMS comet pinball machine backglass translite replacement my backglass seams faded but you tell me does it look too bad?
Thanks for any help !

Welcome to the club Comet is a great pin.
BGResto just got a good one to scan and can reproduce something better than a translite.
Welcome to the Comet club!
Are there LEDs behind your backglass? They do seem to wash things out on the Comet. Mine came with LEDs and I ended up replacing them with 47s, looks much better.

Warn white led's look much better.

I did manage to grab a new backglass, so no fade. Figured I'd try some warm whites at some point.

Hey Jay were these the displays from Marco. I hsve a replacement set from him and the commas don't work on mine. Was wondering if this trick would work to fix mine as well.
Mine came with the machine, so not sure where they were purchased. The brand is Pinscore. I know some of the Pinscores have a jumper that lets you turn the commas on and off. See post 453 in this thread.

Seems like I checked mine back when that was posted and I don't recall mine having that jumper. I will check again who knows I might have been half in the bag when I checked. It's very annoying not having the commas show up. Thx

My experience is that the displays for Comet from Marco do not have commas. They know this and hope you don’t care or notice, unless something has changed. I returned mine and went with Xpin. Much better product all around.
So looks like my displays are Pinscores and are Revision "E". I don't see a jumper anywhere on the board. All I see is a push button switch in bottom left corner labeled segment test and a small dial style switch in upper right corner with no label. Can someone please post a pic of this jumper so I can see if it's something that i'm missing? You can see in the pic commas are there they just don't light up.

I should have been more clear. Yes, the commas are there (mine were the same), but they didn’t work with Comet. I’ll be interested to see if you figure something out. I had Marco contract their engineer for these and he basically said no dice. But again, maybe something has changed....
I have PinScore's in my Comet and I think the Comas work. I will check tonight. I thought there was a fix for this where you had to swap 2 wires.
Just put Wolffpac Tech displays in my Comet this weekend and was happy to see the commas. Only slight issue I had was not knowing some Comets have pin connectors instead of edge connectors on the master display PCB. A little rewiring and the displays were working good.
So glad I got the chance to join the Comet club.

How are you liking the Wolfpac displays I’m going to order some from him soon.

This is my third set. I bought two red sets, one for Gorgar and one for Blackout and then an orange set for Comet. The orange looks really close to the originals IMO and it's really nice having displays that only use 5v.
Assembly is straight forward. The only thing to be careful of is how darn sticky the padding stickers are. There are some exposed sticky areas after you install them and if you accidentally have something touch there it's tough getting things unstuck without ripping.

That is great I have a blackout that I planned on getting a set for too! I think I'm just sticking with original orange. Did you buy from his website or from ebay. How was it to contact him and say you needed to Comet set for System 9

I bought directly from his website. Unfortunately I didn't realize Comet used a PCB with pin connectors instead of edge connectors until after I assembled my set. Luckily I had spare edge connectors and the wiring conversion chart is readily available online.
I did write him via his website contact form but haven't heard back yet(it's only been 4 or 5 days). Not sure if the form is broke or what but in the end I didn't need anything so it wasn't an issue.
If I really needed a reply I'd probably have written to him again via eBay since his auction tells you to ask him about Comet. (I just wish his website mentioned Comet was a different PCB.)
And I think I'd also go with orange for Blackout if I had it to do over again. Red goes great with Gorgar but it's only so-so with Blackout IMO.
Ok, I got my Comet working.
All seems well, but I'm a bit mystified by the backbox GI lights.
I've put in plain white frosted LEDs.
First of all : they work and the relay switches them on in coil test as coil number 13.
But - they're not on during attract mode.
The controlled lights and flashers in the backbox work.
When I start a game, at certain times the lights will switch on briefly.
Is this normal behavior - or is there a wrong setting or something completely wrong with my game ?
Quoted from Zigzagzag:Ok, I got my Comet working.

Sounds like a flaky relay.
Quoted from pinheadpierre:Sounds like a flaky relay.
Ok, so this is not normal behavior then ?
I'll take a closer look at the relay and associated transistors then.
Thanks

Check this relay next time your backbox lights go out. As they age they can get sticky. Often, tapping on it will be enough to get it to turn back on. It is a commonly available automotive part.

My relay worked, but previous owner had moved one connector from normal-closed to normal-open - your center contact.
Mine was connected to the outer lug.
I moved it to the center one, and now it seems to work as it should
How does everyone else’s kick-out from the ramp shot function?
I’ve replaced the coil sleeve, and it seems the solenoid works just fine, but I’ve always felt that the kick feels...weird. Like it SHOULD kick into the pops, but it just kind of dribbles down to the flippers.

That kind of kicker isn't going to do much more than remove the ball from the saucer. It's not meant to throw it far.

Mine kicks into the pops every single time.
My kickout from the funhouse however barely moves the ball. They look like the same part and looking at the manual confirms they are. I have never played another Comet so not sure how they usually kickout from there

I have this on my long term bucket list of pinball refinements. I plan to see what it’s like either with a slightly stronger coil or maybe unwind the existing coil two or three hundred turns like I do on old games with sluggish pops.
Potential Comet club member based on the current members thoughts on the condition of this game. Background on it, it was my buddies mother's and has not been played in 15 or so years. It was in her bowling alley and moved home after they sold the business. Things I am seeing with my limited knowledge, needs shopped badly, bands are falling off. It will turn on but not launch a ball. 3 of the displays do not work. If I move the cable from the working one the others will work but display segments are out. I found a number of connectors unplugged, plugged them in with no changes. Found a burnt connector on the board and gets warm when powered on. Also cannot find what this connector goes to. She wants 400 for it. I am not afraid to fix it but I don't want to pump more money in it than I could sell it for when I'm tired of owning it. See pictures and let me know your thoughts.

Yeah maybe but my knowledge is limited to what I learn on here. Don't want to get in too much over my head.
Quoted from Jason43:I mean, for 400 bucks, you'll get your money back easily if you can't get it going.
Any thoughts on that hot connector? Anyone see that before? Or how about that loose connector?
