Here's the before:

Put some lights under my star posts......

20190210_180627 (resized).jpg20190210_180627 (resized).jpg

I also put them by the "go kart" loop
20190210_181046 (resized).jpg20190210_181046 (resized).jpg

Next up is wiring in the new LED ring things under the pop bumpers and maybe getting clear pop bodies and different colored caps.
I think once the pop bumpers are done and maybe some apron lights it should be good to go. Game was super dark but now its a lot more playable with the lights off. I have clear star posts on the way and some more star post LED thingies.

That looks nice all lit up..I’ve been thinking of adding led bulbs, but haven’t priced it out out yet..how many reds, greens, whites...

#603 5 years ago

I'm making all the GI lights white. I had a few color matching bulbs like green under the bottom left tree plastic and behind the dunk the dummy, but everything is getting changed to white except the gates where the 1986 roll over lanes are, those will stay red. Right now the only real dark areas are the unlit pop bumpers (obvi :p ) and behind the flippers. I may still add some directional LEDs like vid1900 did behind the ducks.

#604 5 years ago

Leds do wonders on this game. It's a very dark playfield and leds helped a lot. Unlike some older games, the bright white bulbs look great on it.

Imo, color match the inserts. Everything above the playfield looks best white.

Quoted from Jason43:

Agreed. Might be tough to tell through the pictures, but all the inserts are color matched. I think once I swap out the star posts for clear and put em up near the corkscrew that area will be perfect.

#606 5 years ago

You cant tell in any pics but I put 2 flame bulbs in the eyes on the comet coaster behind the backglass and they look pretty damn cool. Next time you put in a bulb order from comet grab yourself a couple and I think you will be pleased with the effect. I know I am for what its worth.

Transparent orange Cork Screw ramps back in stock tomorrow. Also have the transparent red Cycle Jump ramp available and the black ABS Cycle Jumps will be made on demand.

Does anyone know if CPR ever did a Comet playfield? I can't find any info on it, so Im guessing not. Trying to decide if I go the hardtop route or wait for the "on-demand" playfields to come out. Id rather have the repro playfield if I have a choice (though I have a space shuttle with a hard top and its an awesome product).

#609 5 years ago

Just got my Cabinet back from being stenciled, it came out Great. The playfield has a Hardtop installed, almost everything new on the top side, new Freeplay40 cork screw and jump ramp, new posts, plastics, Titan rings, Comet LED's. It's been a project sitting around for almost 3 years time to finish this project, i can't wait to play it. Time to reassemble the cabinet.

I had already done the LED thing:
20190210_170822 (resized).jpg20190210_170822 (resized).jpg

but I added some post LEDs:
20190210_174327 (resized).jpg20190210_174327 (resized).jpg
and swapped all the star posts to clear:
20190221_195259 (resized).jpg20190221_195259 (resized).jpg

and I added a trough light:
20190222_205050 (resized).jpg20190222_205050 (resized).jpg

and LED strips by the corkscrew, to the left of the skeeball ramp, behind the ducks, and behind the rabbits:

20190222_200410 (resized).jpg20190222_200410 (resized).jpg
I used vid1900 's technique of aluminum tape behind the ducks

The overall brightness is AMAZING

OK... working on a Comet I will have for sale soon... got most of the kinks out... except...

All sounds appear to be working except for the screams when the ball exits the comet ramp... it just makes a weird kinda clunk and the other sound stops... switch is working and points score correctly...

Silly question.... when do I know it's time to rebuild my flippers?
I have a comet... of course... and I rarely get the ball up the middle ramp.
Slow and weak.... like grandma..

Pitch of the table is good...
Cleaned and waxing a month or so ago...
Newer rubbers on the flippers....

When I do rebuild, what's the easiest way to do it?
Do I need the kit that Marco sells or do I need to just replace the coils?

Thanks,

MM

#622 4 years ago

I'd bet the coils are fine. Plungers, links, switches etc more than likely are due for a change. I sourced the parts instead of going with a kit, but that was just to save a few bucks.

#623 4 years ago

When I had trouble making it up the center ramp my flippers were just fine. For me, the screws holding the ramp entrance loosened and fell to the bottom of the cabinet. It made the ramp unstable and only a pure center hit would make it up. I’d take a peek there before spending money.

#624 4 years ago

I'd start with a good parts cleaning. Pull the parts off give everything a good cleaning, use a q-tip inside the coil, i like to use a magic eraser on the plunger, soak the linkage and clean the moving parts, check the coil sleeve if it slides out smoothly and you don't have an extra one just clean that also with a q-tip. Years of use and carbon dust build up can slow everything down, if you have access to a sonic washer toss the whole flipper mech in there. They are cheap also from Harbor Freight.

Finished the rehab on the Comet I picked up a couple months back, it now looks right at home.

Thats awesome looking side by side with its older brother Cyclone. Now all you need is a Hurricane and you will have a very sweet trifecta of fun!!

#628 4 years ago
Quoted from jaytrem:

Quite a bit, but a lot of it was just busy work:
• power board repair and a couple transistors on a strobe circuit.
• restored the transformer board
• fix some backbox sag
• considerable paint work on backbox
• rubbers, flippers, legs, glass, target decals, bulbs, etc., etc., and a few mechanical fixes where needed. Standard fair as the game had sat for almost a decade in a storage container.

Just needed some love and I wanted to rehab it. Far from a true “restore”, but back to 100% playing and looking pretty good.

Forgot about the speech board... most speech was missing (except explosion) but replacing the two small IC’s and resocketing the ROMs fixed it. So many little things I forget half of them.

Thanks for the advise but I decided to replace it all....... Flipper Kit and New coils. I'll rebuilt later this week.

More to come.

Anybody know the dimensions of the Comet translite? Thanks

2 weeks later
#632 4 years ago

Hey everyone!

Getting my Comet up and running...it's getting real close (the big thing at the moment is, I think, just the pop bumpers being sluggish), but there's also a problem with the sound. I get the "hey, Turkey!" guy taunts, and the train sounds on the left outlane, and the coaster sounds and drumrolls...but no music!

I do believe there used to be sound, back when I played this game in my grandparents' basement in the 90s...where should I start, to figure out what might be wrong? Thanks!

I can measure the glass, but its not a translite. Its printed on the glass itself.

I think I found it at 27x18. If you can confirm this it would be appreciated

Yes, you should have music playing. I suspect it's something more, but there is a knob on my sound board that controls something like the voice/music ratio. Can't hurt to check that.

THANK YOU!

Mines 21x28.75, roughly. I didn't take it out to measure.

#639 4 years ago

I was feeling the need to make Comet a tad more challenging and decided to remove the one way gate next to the left flipper. It makes a BIG difference in gameplay - much more challenging!

Can I get a little bit of help; please.
The gate leading out of the corkscrew it not tripping the switch. The switch is working...I can trip it manually.

The arming leading to the switch it fine.... and arming is sitting correct. It seam like there is too much "movement" in the arm, for the arm to pull up on the switch. Any help would be great.

Thanks,

MM

Do you mean the center ramp?

#643 4 years ago

Thanks guys!

#644 4 years ago
Quoted from Jason43:

Do you mean the center ramp?

No...... to the left of the center ramp there is the exit to the cork-screw. Just pass the exit of the cork-screw there is a wire form (a gate).
That gate works on the same principles as the center ramp gate in which the ball passes under the wire form and triggers the switch from below.
It seams like the center ramp as a good amount of tension on the arm and triggers easy, as to the cork-screw gate arm has very little.
I need to a adjust this arm but I'm not sure how.

I hope this helps.

Finally finished my Comet Restore, turned it on for the first time in 3 years on Wednesday. Thursday morning finished getting all switches adjusted and a little extra lighting installed (another set of post LED's And a strip in the apron) then preceded to wrap it up and take it straight to the Atlanta Southern Fried Gaming Expo SFGE.
It Won Best in Show Restoration award also.
Glad people enjoyed it. Very positive on the Hardtop install also. At the show I picked up an orginal Signed flyer by the late Great Python Angelo and Barry Oursler also to go along with the pin very happy with that.

Recently replaced my ball with a lighter ball from Pinsound (they do sell their own balls) and feel it plays a lot better. I find this ball is a bit easier to make the various ramp shots and likely does less damage to the game.
