I love the LED in my TWD. But I'm probably more of a traditionalist in that I actually like the red DMD and the "dot" look. My LED looks just like my old red DMD except with color. Pretty much exactly what I was looking for in adding color.

I turned the contrast on my LED up to 9 and it seemed to reduce the dead space. But I agree, there is a bit more than a normal DMD.
