I'm brand new to the hobby and just had an X-Men LE shipped to me. Unfortunately I'm already running into issues. It's got a ColorDMD (1.3) installed and power is getting to the display, but there is no evidence of a video signal. Based on the ColorDMD support page I've confirmed that the ribbon cable is oriented correctly and I've also reseated it. I've reinstalled the appropriate ColorDMD code just in case there was an issue there.

Being new to the hobby I don't have another machine to test with or even another DMD to swap in for troubleshooting. Reaching out to ColorDMD support brought me to the conclusion that this may be an issue with the CPU board itself. I don't see any indications of damage to the board, but I'm not sure where else to focus.

Is this likely an issue with the CPU board? Something repairable by an expert?

Hey, thanks for the reply. Everything else in the game works just fine. Gameplay, lights, audio, etc. Just no output on the ColorDMD.

I really appreciate all the feedback. I've tried to answer everybody's questions and I'll attach some photos as well.

Also, I've discovered an orphaned plug with space for 6 pins and 1 blank in a 2-4 arrangement and included it in a photo. Anybody know where this should go?

Quoted from Guinnesstime:

I would backtrack through the install directions to see if there is a simple connection issue. In pinball, it's usually the simplest thing that's causing the problem.
Is there power to the color DMD board when the game is on? There should be some lights on the back side of it that come on.
If not, check the connection that is run to the front right side near the power supply near the coin door.
If you have power, then try reseating or flipping the ribbon cables to the color DMD.

I've backtracked a few times with no luck.
The ColorDMD is getting power. The 'Done' LED lights up on the back and I'm able to get into the menu system.
I've reseated the ribbon cable a few times and just tried flipping it just in case. No luck.

Quoted from PinballManiac40:

Please post a picture of everything connected. Can you post a picture of the screen when you press the menu button as well?
Did you install the Chroma file for Xmen? Should had been from this support page. http://colordmd.com/support_firmware_chroma.html
What size USB stick are you using?

See attached photos.
I've installed the older version of X-Men code, not Chroma, since this is a 1.3v ColorDMD.
I'm using an 8GB USB stick formatted to FAT32. Code installs (Sigma and X-Men) haven't fixed the issue but also haven't raised any errors on their own.

Quoted from PinballManiac40:

Also, did you disconnect the power cabke from the right side of the small DMD power board in the backbox? If so, connect it back and see the results.

I think you're referring to the DMD high voltage board that is required for plasma DMD displays. X-Men shipped with an LCD DMD so this board isn't included and isn't required (that I'm aware of) for installation of a ColorDMD. See attached photo of the contents of my backbox. If I'm misunderstanding, please elaborate.

Quoted from IceCreamMan:

Make sure you power connector (red and black) are oriented correctly.

Triple checked.

I purchased a stock Red LED DMD from Pinball Life to determine whether the issue is with the ColorDMD or the Pinball board. But to get power to it I need one of these cables, which I'm having trouble positively identifying or finding for sale anywhere. Any ideas?

Quoted from PinballManiac40:

Getting power to the ColorDMD does not seem to be the issue that you were having.

You're right, but I can't confirm whether the root cause is the ColorDMD or the Stern board unless I can power the stock Stern LED DMD. The cable used to power it is different than the one used to power the ColorDMD.

Quoted from PinballManiac40:

Can you snap a picture of the ColorDMD board so Randy can see if the chip is damaged?

Quoted from Dmod:

If you would like to send in the control board from your display, I can test it here and let you know if there's an issue with the board. Email info (at) colordmd.com.

I really appreciate the offer, sending a PM soon.

Randy was able to confirm the ColorDMD is functional and the fine folks at Marco Specialties were kind enough to cobble together the 5v cable I needed to power my stock LED DMD, which still displayed nothing. At this point I'm convinced it's an issue with the CPU board so I'm planning on calling Stern's support on Monday.

Just to circle back on this in case someone runs into a similar issue in the future.

Sent the CPU board, display, and ribbon cable to the fine folks at Game Exchange in Denver and they confirmed an issue with the CPU board. Initiating a repair and going from there.
