ColorDMD: Aargh, Game 36 Be 'Ere!

ColorDMD's is excited to announce Pirates of the Caribbean as our fifth title release for 2016, and to preview the game at the Texas Pinball Festival later this week!  POTC is the 36th game to be supported by the ColorDMD pinball display platform.  Let the ale flow!

POTC_Title_(resized).PNG

Pirates of the Caribbean is the debut release for Jeff Collins, a programmer and avid pinball enthusiast based in Kansas City. Through POTC, Jeff has been able to blend his hobby and professional talents.

Growing up in the town of Joplin, Missouri, the local arcades were Jeff's favorite childhood hangouts. Pirates was one of the first few pins Jeff acquired about 12 years ago before slipping down the slippery slope of "Surely there's room for just one more in the game room"

POTC_Compass_(resized).PNG

Jeff resides in Prairie Village, Kansas, with his wife Kathy. His daughter Maddie attends Kansas State University.  Max, 16, enjoys Dad's hobby, and has helped Jeff carry and position more the 50+ pinball machines that are currently setup in the basement.  (Jeff's slope is very slippery.)

The ColorDMD for Pirates pinball machines leverages the company's easy-to-install ColorDMD SIGMA platform and supports six different rendering styles.  Multicolor operation is enabled through free download and installation of a game-specific ROM using a USB drive. The display may be reconfigured for use with any supported title.

Displays are in stock now for immediate shipping, The color ROM for POTC is targeted for release on Friday, March 25. Thank you for your continued support!  For additional information, including upcoming game previews, please visit us at www.colordmd.com.

EDIT: Video Preview Added

Now bring me that horizon.

Thanks Jeff!

Ugghh....crap...I'm still behind. I need one also for TZ, Dr Who, and TOM still since I put Sigma displays in Stern Indy and Indianapolis 500, which look amazing by the way.

Thank you! Ordered!

#6 3 years ago

Ordered!! Third of three for me! All color. All the time!

#7 3 years ago

Nice work, Jeff!

#8 3 years ago

Man so many games I have I could like to add color dmd to. I could drop like 4K just upgrading. I think this one would look really good in color.

#9 3 years ago

Awesome work Jeff!

Looks great

#11 3 years ago

Looking forward to the video, or failing that I'll see it at TPF!

#12 3 years ago

Hope to see lots of POTC owners at TPF!
I'll be there in search of my missing Dead Man's Chest !

ColorDMD will preview the new POTC ColorDMD at TPF! Thanks to Paul Danis for allowing us to use his game at the show. I think the game will be located in the Back Alley Creations Booth at the show.

We will also have a ring of ColorDMD games hosted by Paul McKinney, Craig Hassell, and Kim Keist (Kimball's Pinballs) including TRON LE, Metallia, Iron Man, Avengers LE, Flinstones, and CV, including a preview of our recently announced LED product offering.

Brian Foytik will be bringing a TZ, and a Corvette with a SIGMA display. A number of other games hosting ColorDMDs will be located throughout the show floor.

#14 3 years ago

Will it be using the new LED display?

#15 3 years ago

No, we plan to demo POTC with our standard display that we are currently shipping. The LED displays will be in the ring. One will be placed in CV and the other in one of the SAM games.

Friday, right?

I wish the Kraken was a little less bright green and blue, but otherwise I love it. Nice work!

Thanks for the feedback. Recording video in a dark room and trying to get all the colors to show up accurately was beyond my skill set. I stopped adjusting once I got the yellow score numbers not to show as white.
The 'blue' on the Kraken is actually a dark purple - it showed up quite bright in the video.
And the brown ship boards (when you attack/sink a ship) aren't that dark or orange - they're a nice 'woody brown'
Hopefully you'll get a ColorDMD and try it out !

I'm going to swap in my LOTR CDMD tonight! Can't wait to play through a few games with it. The screen shot above does indeed look much better.

Wouldn't brown over the blue be a better choice? Did you try that combination?

#28 2 years ago

I am happy to see yet another game colorized. Definitely, not an easy task.

#29 2 years ago

I have a few friends who've worked on ColorDMD titles. It's like sewing buttons onto jellyfish. A whole army of jellyfish.

#30 2 years ago

Definitely I am liking the yellow text on that Kraken screen shot.

#31 2 years ago

The color display is in and waiting for the code. More like guidelines.

Thanks for the comment/feedback.
Coloring certain things are easier than others.
Jack the monkey is brown, skulls are white, ships are brown, water is blue.
After that, it's a balance of what's accurate to the movie (and images on the machine) and what looks good on the ColorDMD.
We knew it would be important to be as true to the movies/franchise as possible due to how passionate POTC owners are.
I spent a lot of time Googling images to build a library to consult.

In the movie, the Kraken is grayish and slimy. A lot like most of the crew and Davy Jones and his 'beard of tentacles'.
I felt a ColorDMD with a bunch of gray characters would be a waste of color pixels and POTC owners would be disappointed in the end product.

That being said, I tried not to add color for the sake of "just adding color" either.

Install your ColorDMD so you're ready to download the ROM Friday. I think it looks better in the machine than any of the video or screen shots.
Only have to wait a little longer to see it in action and fight Davy Jones !

I just ordered 2 more ColorDMDs, for POTC and JM. My reward to myself for ignoring TWD, GOT, ST and GB.

#36 2 years ago

Looks awesome, do we really have to wait until friday

#37 2 years ago

Ready and waiting!

Looks great. I like the warm white on your ship - mine is green . Might have to change that after a much needed cleaning I have planned. That's when I'll put the new speaker panel and speaker LEDs/acrylics in also. It's a great game!

Nice pics all. And I'm looking forward to seeing this with the LED display.

#40 2 years ago

I put green on my ship spotlights for a while, but after switching back, I think the green really washes out the detail of the ship. So.......midnight Thursday night is technically friday- just sayin'

I agree on the white vs green. Plus I think white will let the 'cannon LEDs' show up better.
Like I said, mine is scheduled for a much needed cleaning and some different LEDs.

I'm not the gatekeeper on when the ROM is on the site - I'll post something here when it's available.

#42 2 years ago

I pulled out all of the colored GI when I bought mine a few weeks ago. I've got warm white CT premiums now, except for the exposed bulbs (like the right side of the shooter lane). I went with #44s there. I do need to add a few spotlights.

I can't wait until Friday. I want color NOW. That KEY looks great!

That KEY looks great!

If you like the key - wait till you see the other pirates.
And the cow!
