I'm looking for a reasonably priced printer that will allow me to print the occasional waterslide decal, but that is also just an overall decent printer to use for the kids' school work, etc. I've scanned through Vid's guide and see that laser printers seem to be the way to go. I am a bit cost conscious here. Do you guys have any recommendations for reasonably priced printers?

Had an epson for a few years with no issues...i am convinced that most printers arent built to last though.

Get a laser or a dyesub - everything else seems to fade faster than a stepmother's kiss.

Industrial printers must be the only ones able to last (I assume). I have never seen a laser printer and even then they require a replacement on the laser cartridge. Canon makes great printers and I have an all-in-one. It's all about replacement cartridges!

With Epson inkjets you have to regularly print with them. Since the heads are non-replaceable, once you get dried ink in them it's a nightmare to clear out the nozzles.

HP inkjets you get new heads with every cartridge, along with a fresh mortgage it feels like. Ink costs a fortune with HP due to the heads being part of the cartridge.

I honestly went back to B&W laser. But with the prices more affordable, I'm considering color laser for the next time around. Though again you run into the same issue with toner being uber expensive for the better printing HP machines. They love to change toner/ink designs with every new generation of printers. This gives them time to rake in the cash before the generic refill companies come out with affordable refills.

I have an old HP B&W laserjet for printing everyday stuff.

For pinball I have a dedicated color laser printer. It's a Xerox Phaser 6010N.

Before you buy, always go on Meritline.com and make sure that the color toner for your possible laser printer purchase is available

You don't want to buy some orphan printer than you have to buy OEM toner @ $150

    - you have probably noticed that for any given printer, the price of the 4 different color inkjet cartridges is exactly the price you paid for the entire printer.....

Personally, I look for a 1 year old or 2 year old HP Color Laser. Found most at Office Depot or equal, when models change.

Depending on the market change both the printer and the cartridges begin to drop, and cartridge shopping and yield can
    make a huge difference.
As an example, We have HP2025DN, if memory serves, and all 4 cartridges with their "2500 page print" are $50 shipped....
Thats $12 a cartridge compared to $100-$200 each in some cases. I think we have around 8 in use, no printer issues, and some of the
generic cartridges will screw up, but a low cost business and home solution without having to worry about liquid ink costs, cartridges, low yield.

Thanks all for the advice. I like the idea of looking for a deal on last year's model. I'll also be sure to make sure toner is available at a good price.

Right now, I have a black and white laser printer that works well and a color ink jet that's a piece of junk and doesn't really work. I mainly need something for the kids, but I would like it to be good enough that I can start playing around with water slide decals and stuff as I look to spruce up my older pin.
