Looking to get a color dmd for IJ Williams. I'm trying to figure out which to go with- LCD or LED. Can someone help? I simply prefer the dot look over the cartoon look, if that makes sense.
Thanks

Well, if you want to read through 400 posts of opinions, this is your thread:

But based on your statement that you like dots, you want to order the LED.

Is one easier to install than the other on this machine?

I didn't think I'd like the led but got it for cv and I think it looks great. I have a lot of the lcds and they just are not as vibrant as the led versions. I think it's all personal preference though.

I just put an LCD color DMD in my IJ this weekend. To clarify previous comments, LCD has multiple options, including dots (dots xl setting is what I use). My understanding is that LED only has 1 mode and it's a smoother/cartoon like display. As far as brightness, it's adjustable 0-9, mine is set on 4.

Additionally, I think colordmd uses the same video on their website to represent LCD and LED. So don't be fooled into thinking you are watching 2 different products.

Both are basically the same install, but the LED is the same form factor as your existing DMD. The LCD is much larger and sticks up above the speaker panel.

Here was a post I made in the LCD v LED thread with pro/cons as I see them:

I like lcd better, has more options.
Tile and smoorhing look great, you can even set to dots.

Agree with this. I have LCD on mine. It's a no brainer if money is not an option. Even then... it's not much more.

Opinions abound on this subject. I had an LCD in my Indy and switched to LED when it was released. The LED is brighter and looks exactly like a plasma; you can see each dot even when the screen is off, versus the LCD which is black like a computer monitor. The LCD is still a cool product and the smoothing and tile modes are neat.

If you have the older jackpot board installed, the bigger LCD may not fit.
I have the newer, thinner jackpot board and the fit is tight

I haven't changed anything on the machine. So does that mean the LCD won't fit?

The jackpot board is an after market light board installed on some machines that is installed underneath the DMD. By the sounds of it you do not have it installed so the LCD will fit.

The LED screen should fit with either jackpot board installed
