Yep not much to work with when considering other games. Fewer dot intensities = less shading. I would HIGHLY recommend tuning the contrast settings on your display for this game. It gives the skin tones much more depth. Note about that... the lower the number the higher the contrast it seems. Mine is at 3 and looks good.
