Quoted from TopMoose:

That would be hilarious - teasing "zone-zone-zone" when TZ is one of the most-anticipated releases and then revealing that it's Party Zone. You'd hear the screaming from TZ owners miles away.
A small part of me kinda wants it to happen.

Party Zone, like Gilligan and some others is a mounting problem. The DMD window is integrated into the translite art, and I believe mounted on the light board, isn't it? So mounting large colordmd display is an issue.

#36 8 years ago
Quoted from kpg:

According to a couple people, Randy at ColorDMD said TWD isn't even being worked on currently, as recently as 2 weeks ago. I am hoping he was just BS'ing to throw people off, but it doesn't sound like it.

He wasn't wrong ... when he said it.

#90 8 years ago

I have to be honest, I'm a little disappointed by the apparent lack of freaking out here. I mean, it's Tron.

#96 8 years ago
Quoted from Whysnow:

has blue dots which actually work much better than color

No. Just, no.

Quoted from Slim64:

How does that fit with today's clue?

You've never heard hulk hogan refer to his arms?

#140 8 years ago
Quoted from TopMoose:

Seems pretty clear

Holy understatement, Mr Brownstone.

Quoted from TopMoose:

It's only a week since their last release and we're getting more hints!

Randy did say he hoped to "make it rain" once displays came in back at the beginning of the year.

#162 8 years ago
Quoted from TheLaw:

Look like he's gonna make it rain with 3 releases at once!

That's the only thing I'm sure Randy won't do. He likes to do one at a time, so each has it's moment in the sun.

#194 8 years ago
Quoted from DCFAN:

I believe I saw on facebook that two new ColorDMD titles will be at TPF.

Tis true. So I guess by the letter of the law, I'm a liar. But there is more to the TPF news. The double announcement is a very special case

#200 8 years ago

Yes, they're releasing a color dmd for a game you can't even get yet. That seems reasonable.

I just figured that kid was from a Hilfiger ad, lol.

Quoted from bigbadmiker:

Well, this is disappointing for my dad who was looking forward to his first ColorDMD for Twister...
I thought for sure that's what it was going to be. Oh well.

I'm sure it'll get done someday.

#246 7 years ago
Quoted from bigbadmiker:

Yeah, he's going to sell his Twister.
ColorDMD was going to sway him to keep it for awhile...

I so can't get into this mindset. Sure, having a color display on a game is an awesome upgrade - but it doesn't affect actual gameplay. The decision to buy or sell a game based on color being available baffles me.

I think Congo now holds the title of "most-anticipated Color DMD release."

I thought that was easily Star Trek

#275 7 years ago

I love how far people are willing to stretch to make it fit the game they want, no matter what the clue is

#291 7 years ago
Quoted from Whysnow:

I think you can remove Cactus Canyon? Eric already colorized that one for CCC.
That B/W list of uncolored games icludes most of my B/W colleciton, LOL
Congo; Corvette; Dirty Harry; No Fear;

CC Should stay on. There are far more CC's than run my junk. I'm sure there are owners waiting/hoping for CC to get colored.

Quoted from chubtoad13:

Just brothers, but so are Mario and luigi, right?

"Created by prominent game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, Luigi is portrayed as the slightly younger but taller fraternal twin brother of Nintendo's mascot Mario, and appears in many games throughout the Mario franchise, often as a sidekick to his brother."

Not sure how you can be "younger" AND a "twin brother" -- thanks wikipedia.

#376 7 years ago
Quoted from MK6PIN:

Damn....have to buy another one....appears this one has newer engine? wonder if this should have been used in TRON, as I had an older Sigma in mine? Does anyone know if IM is the new version, as well?

The only difference in the display board currently, is the amount of storage. SM is just bigger, data-wise. Nothing else "new" there.

3 weeks later
#446 7 years ago
Quoted from Suicyco:

But most CC owners do not have CCC. I wonder how hard it would be to colorize plain ol' Cactus Canyon based on the CCC colorization...

There's nothing from CCC color that can be used on colorDMD, its an entirely different method. CCC uses a dmd asset format that pyprocgame understands, and the color is actually saved in the assets themselves.

#451 7 years ago
Quoted from PinballManiac40:

Well...Stern just dropped v1.70 game code for Metallica. Looks like someone has some ColorDMD updates to do!!

Looks like the bulk of it won't affect things, but some of the update notes definitely point to things that will need rework, like:

- Removed "casket" text from coffin multiball start effect.

- Added super jackpot stage to snake multiball. After collecting 3
(adjustable) snake combo jackpots, all shots are lit for super jackpot
until the end of the multiball. Playfield shots disappear when
collected, and reappear when all have been collected or the snake
eject is scored.

- Fixed the player up display effect so it does not end with blank text.

- Fixed stray (bad) pixels in the BATTERY mode intro art.

#453 7 years ago
Quoted from j_m_:

I'm not seeing any graphic chances in the rom. I think all of the changes are simply programmatic

Text changes affect the display but would not be apparent just thumbing through the graphics in pinball browser. The lack of "casket" on one screen will likely need adjusting, and if the snake super jackpots are labelled as such, they will also. Not that these are major changes, they'll just require some time to do and test.

#469 7 years ago
Quoted from Grinder901:

[Crying Elvis]

I was actually going to look into maybe trying to borrow an Elvis, for um, no particular reason ... but then I watched some video of the game on youtube and I see that it's got video parts from lord knows what source.

#477 7 years ago
Quoted from Taxman:

Junk Yard would be cool. But one of the color guys has to have access to one and there don't seem to be a lot of them.

I know of one I could borrow

#478 7 years ago
Quoted from Grinder901:

Well the fact that you are considering/considered it, means a lot.
Does the source matter? Couldn't you just chose colors as you see fit for the video parts?

Hand coloring video (depending on the scene) is extremely hard to make it look good, rather than blotched on color.

Quoted from Grinder901:

Ok so it's been over two weeks. Seems like enough time to find out the newest colored release by E.

Next release isn't one of mine

#497 7 years ago
Quoted from PinballManiac40:

How soon you think the next release will be?

No idear, I just work here.

#504 7 years ago
Quoted from PinballManiac40:

No!! It was just a typing error because he was up too late colorizing DOTS for Slugfest!!

Oh please. Like that would require staying up late.

#516 7 years ago
Quoted from EricHadley:

Have they ever released color for a game that is still in production?

Like SMVE?

3 weeks later
#640 7 years ago
Quoted from Grinder901:

Ok and now E likes my comment....hmm... I'm starting to get:

Sorry, I thought it was amusing - I'm not confirming anything.

#646 7 years ago
Quoted from Taxman:

For starters the code should be finished before it is colored. We just saw new code for Met come out so who knows.
Also, the person coloring the game has to want to do it and have easy access to it.
Then with the newer games it is best to own the LE or premium and have someone who can test it on a pro.
Also, the oldies are great.

Also, the oldies, in general, are less complicated to do.

#664 7 years ago
Quoted from awarner:

Ask someone who went to the ColorDMD Talk at this year's Southern Fried Gameroom Expo...

They would be wrong.

#668 7 years ago
Quoted from danczaz:

I figured it out... But since I did a title for Colordmd it would be inappropriate to guess... Look at the last clue.... It's a give away for the game! Not sure how someone hasn't figured out title based on last clue alone!

Randy had to feed me hints on every clue to get me to the right answer. I are dum.

#670 7 years ago
Quoted from Ericpinballfan:

NO FEAR... Its No Fear!!!
Does this guess count? I'm not on facebook, well, I hate facebook.

It doesn't count because A) You didn't provide an explanation for each clue, and 2) You're wrong anyway.

Still no winnah. Step right up and make your guess. What about you sir? You look like a smart man?

missed-target_(resized).pngmissed-target_(resized).png

You guys need to stop trying to shoe-horn in what you want it to be and try to figure out what it actually is.

#726 7 years ago
Quoted from Mudflaps:

WTF? I guess I'm bad at these clues, because I have no idea how those translate to DE SW.
Either way, good job guys!

Yeah, I didn't either. It helps if you think of the first and third as generic pictograms, and not so much the specific people. The second one is entirely about the movie title.

#732 7 years ago
Quoted from herg:

Ali - Fighter, as in Tie Fighter
"Soldier" in the Rain, I guess
Walker
Maybe?

He's wearing a tie. A fighter in a tie.

What are the only soliders in Star Wars?

And where is that guy doing is walking?

#738 7 years ago
Quoted from DeathHimself:

Storm Troopers, and title was soldiers in the rain.

Yep - so to sum up:

A fighter in a tie = Tie Fighter
"Soldiers in the Rain" = Storm Troopers
A tight rope walker in the sky = Skywalker

Sorry, not a Brit.

It is not ColourDMD.

Fun fact: Colourdmd.com forwards to colordmd.com

2 months later
#881 7 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

Why not, DMD can always update their code.

Depending on what changes display wise, it can really be a PITA to restructure the logic for the new graphics. Avengers was a huge PITA to re-work to get all the gameplay changes fixed (and BFE still isn't finished) when the updated it a month after the ColorDMD was finished.

#904 7 years ago
Quoted from stevevt:

Rearrange "Rob Reiner" and you get "I err boner". It's obviously Woah Nellie.

they're both quite complex, TWD more so.

He's not wrong.

Edit: about the complex bit, that's all I'm commenting on. Just covering my butt here.

#1070 7 years ago
Quoted from DCFAN:

Yeah. Likely a Walking Dead red herring. Most likely BSD.
Doesn't BSD have a red DMD screen protector that would have to be replaced or engineered? Would that be easy to replace with clear?

There was a guy that made speaker panels with a clear window at some point. And another person posted that you could get the red tint off without killing the artwork with some kind of solvent, but I don't remember what that was.

1 week later
#1151 7 years ago
Quoted from Whysnow:

time for more hints!
It sounded like there could be one more before the end of the year???

At least wait for BSD to be released. Geeez.

#1153 7 years ago
Quoted from Whysnow:

lol. I am hoping 1 more gets announced I want so I can save up to just order 3 and get the free shipping

Quoted from Edenecho:

new hint, with text: STRAIGHT OUTTA WOOLY!
Hmm..Straight outta Compton = black people = NBA Fastbreak?

Whoa, boobs. Clearly it's Stern Playboy.

#1224 7 years ago
Quoted from snakesnsparklers:

Avatar was correct. This one was pretty easy as of the second and third clues IMO. Looks like this will be a nice one, very complicated and it was 3 years in the making!

Hah. Misreading for the win. Wrath of Olympus is three years in the making -- not Avatar ColorDMD.

1 week later
#1242 7 years ago
Quoted from snakesnsparklers:

I bought a Met and I think Randy subconsciously planted the idea in my head that a Met without color was doing it a disservice. That bastard.

He's not wrong. Metallica without a Colordmd is a damn crime.

#1254 7 years ago
Quoted from Whysnow:

Any chance of Godzilla getting color treatment? Looks like it would fit no problem.
I know it is a lower production run, but what a great set of animations.

Isn't sigma green pretty much all you'd need?

#1256 7 years ago
Quoted from Whysnow:

nah, Godizilla has great animations. I wuold be happy to capture for you if you want to do it Eric!

Not doing any other titles where I don't have the machine locally. Too much bother.

Quoted from WJxxxx:

I think it'd look great in black and white, with just the occasional splash of red for the blood - similar to the playfield artwork - rather than in full multi colour

This is actually kind of an interesting concept. Not sure most would agree with you, but it's an interesting idea.

1 week later
#1338 7 years ago
Quoted from Chitownpinball:

So T2 needs all the red changed to grey? What "colors" would you use? The world is very dark and dirty and grey. Im still not convinced.

Yeah there's not a lot of color on that game. Just the hot pink around the inserts. Oooh, do all the text in hot pink.

#1342 7 years ago

The first picture is a picture of burnouts. The second picture is ratchet. This one seems pretty easy compared to most.

That is the Honey Nut Cheerios bee, so not TF. Thank goodness.

I'm confused by the logic here. Is there a Honey Nut Cheerios game? I'm not sure how this disqualifies it from being TF.

1 week later
#1412 7 years ago

Avengers.

That was a complex game to start with. Hadn't had an update in years. Resources were pushed really tight to get the game done. Then a month later they released a new update that has a whole new battle for earth section, some of which is ridiculously complex to work with. It's still not 100% as of today.

But hey, enjoy your armchair.

#1453 7 years ago

Every picture *did* have lethal weapons in them.

#1467 7 years ago
Quoted from Groo:

Are all TWD pro models the same? The speaker/dmd part is metal, so I'm assuming I need that extra kit.

Yep.

#1473 7 years ago
Quoted from bemmett:

Question I have for the ColorDMD experts. I put a ColorDMD in my TWD game like a year ago or so and have had it in there since on just Sigma, does these new hardware specs and whatnot coming out affect what I'll be able to install on my existing one as it relates to Walking Dead, I don't have to buy a newer one do I? I'm hoping not cause that would really suck!

TWD rom will work in all existing ColorDMD displays.

#1483 7 years ago
Quoted from Cheeks:

Is there any possibility of putting the LCD version in a Safe Cracker, or only the LED display?
Hoping it's getting full color some day soon either way.

Safecracker would have to be LED only, due to space.

#1490 7 years ago

If anybody wants to loan me a WOF, I'd do it. Kinda like that game.

#1506 7 years ago
Quoted from PinballManiac40:

Randy, I believe everyone is ready for a new set of hints for the next release.

Man. Dropping a bomb like TWD doesn't even buy a guy a week?

#1548 7 years ago
Quoted from TopMoose:

Going on four days between clues. You're killing me, ColorDMD.

Randy was intending to announce today - but it looks like stock may have sold out over the weekend. So that's a bit problematic.

Edit: My bad - I had clicked on TWD from the front page of the store to check and it said unavailable. But that seems to be an anomoly. I checked a different title and it showed up available.

#1558 7 years ago
Quoted from DCFAN:

Now you have done Ripley's??? Holy smokes you are on fire!

There's another locked and loaded and I'm on to the next after that.

WPC transitions are, to put it politely, a shit show.

Ya'll are like the Apple faithful before a Steve Jobs press conference. Getting all whipped up about fantastic crap you hope will be announced, so that when that information is wrong, the let down is EVEN WORSE.

#1773 6 years ago
Quoted from Meegis:

Im putting money on Jurassic Park.
Seems to have been leaked at a recent pin event I attended.

That wasn't what you think it was, actually.

#1776 6 years ago
Quoted from DCFAN:

Also, the ColorDMD announcement says "releases" (note it is plural).

That part isn't wrong. It would only be wrong if they only released one more game ever.

#1780 6 years ago
Quoted from Ericpinballfan:

Have they done Pinball Magic yet?
Really would like that title, but dont think they have touched Capcom titles?

Capcom currently "works" in sigma, if you figure out the mounting yourself -- but it's not officially supported. The signal isn't 100% correct (I think some of the brightness levels aren't shown correctly), and because of the mounting situation, they're not officially supported for installing at this time.

Several people have worked out ways to run a display, but no games are colored. Yet.

#1787 6 years ago
Quoted from PinballManiac40:

The LCD display colors seemed to get a better color match to the colors on the game than the LED display.

Palettes kind of have to be tuned for each display to really make the colors right. That's not really done. But, for example, I colored TFTC on an LED display and tuned the palette so the colors looked good for the LED because that's what I had. It probably doesn't look exactly as intended on the LCD because of that. Not that it would look BAD, just different.

#1791 6 years ago
Quoted from Darscot:

I am so tempted to order right away

Highly advisable. Then there's no worry of a sellout ;P

#1796 6 years ago

Here's a hot clue for the next ColorDMD release: It's one I didn't do.

#1797 6 years ago

Oh, hey look, there's an ACTUAL new hint:

Quoted from j_m_:

I waiting for when the clues are references to the colorDMD guys going back and re-releasing prior colorized titles using all of the tricks that we've learned over the years and making the titles look even better
what I wouldn't give to see some of those early B/W titles reworked to level of what ac/dc is

Some of the issue is that in the old games there sometimes just isn't much to work with. The stern stuff at 12 levels of brightness gives a lot more shading to pick out with color.

Quoted from DCFAN:

It appears they are going quickly towards knocking out the last of the Bally/Williams titles.

There's still a lot left (even if the next one is No Fear). Dirty Harry, WCS, Who Dunnit, Jackbot, Gilligan, Indy 500 ....

#1949 6 years ago
Quoted from wcbu64:

Yes, the first clue is photo of an old Packard Bell radio, the second is a photo of a coconut cream pie, and the third a photo of my big grin because they finally did Gilligan's Island!

Now that the 'older WMS' display signal is working well, Gilligan could get done. The mounting even with the LED is still sketchy. I put one in a gilligan at my house as a proof of concept. LED hung where the DMD was, new weather stripping, and mounting the ColorDMD PCB on the back side of the light board worked pretty well, but I'm not sure if that's the install Randy wants to officially support.

4 weeks later
#2005 6 years ago

The way they have done games such as Gilligans Island and such I wouldn't doubt this. My money is on this one.

There's always at least one guy.

Bahahahaha

#2092 6 years ago
Quoted from Sinestro:

Spider-Man Vault.

Enh, that's not really fair - the code in SM Vault is the same as SM - just with new art. So it was "done".

#2123 6 years ago

Yeah, jack*bot has a decent amount of stuff, and the bold colors of the playfield would make it look great with a color display, I think.

#2144 6 years ago

I've got a standing offer of a loaner WOF. Just sayin'

#2148 6 years ago
Quoted from Tuna_Delight:

How's Mustang comin' along?

#2334 6 years ago

Short memory ya'll got there.

#2362 6 years ago

Randy was expecting a lot more people would still have September 16th 2014 fresh in their memory. It's ONLY almost three years and 50 (or so) releases ago. I mean, come on people.

#2364 6 years ago
Quoted from DCFAN:

So are you saying it is Indiana Jones again instead of Gilligan's like then?

From facebook: "..well this is going to kind of be like the opposite of that...."

So it is Gilligan's.

#2369 6 years ago

Going to be a good show for ColorDMD.

#2475 6 years ago
Quoted from PinballManiac40:

I hope that means 3 titles being shown.

Why that number? Seems arbitrary. You know ColorDMD releases drop one at a time.

#2478 6 years ago
Quoted from InfiniteLives:

spiderman and spiderman ve!

That's a special case. We actually held the release of the original Spiderman until the VE was ready so as to avoid any possible friction with Stern by making the old game look better than the one currently selling (not that Stern ever said anything about it, just did things that way on the off chance that they would mind )

#2518 6 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

Maybe it's not the wording but the background picture we should be looking at.

When has it not been?

Good luck with the fireworks on that knockoff stuff.

No. No spike support yet.

There's spike "support" - you can put a sigma display in a spike game. There are no games colored yet for Spike, but only because they're not done yet, not because they couldn't be.

There should be a WHOLE lot more "HOLY F#($#K STAR TREK!!1!" given how much bitching there was every time it's NOT Star Trek.

Or maybe people just enjoy bitching.

#2622 6 years ago
Quoted from 0geist0:

Problem is that they don't know if it will work on all models of Star Trek
I just asked them and it has only been tested on a Premium.

Generally the pro models are just lacking some things, so there's LESS graphics -- usually if it works on the premium it's fine on the pro. But it's ColorDMD. If anything turns up that isn't coloring right, it'll get fixed.

#2629 6 years ago

I've posted this a few times, but I'm going to do it again -- for Stern games, especially spike, the LCD will give you a lot better contrast. Spike uses 16 levels of brightness. On an LCD, those are 16 distinct levels. With the LEDs, the dimmer it gets, the less differentiation there is between the brightness levels -- it's not a straight ramp. So you loose detail on the darker bits.

#2655 6 years ago
Quoted from DCFAN:

They said they are working in it. You should be rejoicing. Most newer games have to wait much longer.

Maybe those others you're thinking of are being worked on too. It's all a matter of whether or not someone is willing to jump in - knowing that if there are big changes, they'll be on the hook for the additional work to fix things.

I don't think that Jackbot has to worry about changes.

#2795 6 years ago
Quoted from Shapeshifter:

Does LCD fit flush in the games with tilted metal panel?

Not by default. There are metal standoffs in the center top/bottom that prevent that. You could modify the panel to change that, but that would be on the end user. The ColorDMD supported method of install is the set-back.

#2797 6 years ago
Quoted from Sethman:

whats the power cable situation going to be with Spike?
I see it includes a power cable with the panel (LCD). Is it a direct plug n play or do we need a power splitter to get 12v from somewhere else in Spike? I ask because that was mentioned quite a bit in the past.
Does ordering the LCD kit for GoT get you everything needed to install and play or is there something else we must buy 1st in order to provide the 12v?

Probably if you order for GOT you'll get whatever adapter is needed for power - just like you get WPC / SAM hookups when you order displays for those. But I'm just ASS-U-ME-ing. Need Randy to pop through and confirm.

#3072 6 years ago
Quoted from pinlawyer:

For those in the know, is there any reason why Capcom games would be difficult to colorize?

Just haven't gotten to it yet. Needs a bit of work to get the signal 100% right. There's also the issue of mounting a display in those games. It's either a very fancy new bracket to be able to mount all the bits to, or you have to mount the display with the board essentially out of reach inside a metal box so updating and adjusting is impossible. We (some friends and I) mounted an LCD in a Big Bang Bar just to experiment with it. Turns out the LCD fits fine, but we had to re-loacate the ColorDMD board on some adhesive standoffs to be able to reach the buttons. Another bunch of guys engineered new mounting boards for all the capcom parts, but that's not an official ColorDMD product at this point.

TLDR: Randy has to tweak things for the signal to be 100% and the mounting is problematic.

Great Job Eric P! Congrats on your 15th Title!

Not gonna lie; wasn't fun to work on. Technical frustrations and REALLY crude pixel art to color on. Took longer to do than it should have because I kept dragging my feet on it.

#3087 6 years ago
Quoted from Sethman:

which was harder/worse? Gilligan's or Black Rose to colorize

Black Rose. By a mile. The displays on Gilligan are pretty basic.

The transitions in the attract mode were a huge problem. Took me 3 weeks to come up with a way to do those that worked well. That sucked. The explosions when the 'replay' awards and ship sinking animations play were very problematic. The game doesn't make much use of the 3 shades of brightness, most things are full bright for the foreground and dim for the back. None of this matters to the consumer. I just hope it looks good enough that Black Rose owners are happy with it. Ericpinballfan did beta testing on it and seems happy with it.

Re: that other thing, I've been dropping hints all over the place. Probably more than Randy wishes I would. heh! See you at TPF!

Quoted from kermit24:

1. I like to make sure that the person that does the work gets credit. I believe they do this by the display purchases, but could be mistaken.

You would be mistaken here. Sales of a particular title doesn't really matter. Letting whoever worked on a game know if you enjoy the results here, or on any other forums/social platforms is refreshing/nice.

Quoted from kermit24:

2. Randy has always said to not assume that a display today will work tomorrow in a future unannounced title.

This is very true. You shouldn't ever buy a display for what you hope it will do in the future. ColorDMD makes no promises about future support, so you should buy it for what it can do at the time you buy it.

Is it extremely likely that Ghostbusters will work just fine on the current display? Yes, of course. Will ColorDMD guarantee that? No, that would be silly.

#3122 6 years ago
Quoted from kermit24:

Interesting - So the colorizer is compensated the same if they sell 10 or 1,000 units for a particular title?

Not sure how much detail I should get into, but essentially an amount of compensation is offered up front, and the person offering to do the work can take it or leave it. It does vary by title, but sales after the fact do not affect it.

#3124 6 years ago
Quoted from PinMonk:

What do you think of the way AfMr is handling the colorization? They have quite a few ugly and abrupt palette swaps (most notably during Martian attack when something else happens - the Martians turn orange briefly). It seems like that could have been smoothed out, but I don't know what their system is. It's almost like instead of native color, they're doing what you're doing, but not quite as well, since when there are issues orange is what is seen briefly.

When the video of MMr's color first came out, I was *SURE* they were leveraging the fact that they're using an emulator to inject NEW assets in place of the existing DMD assets. Turned out, that wasn't the case. I haven't seen AFMR in person, but from what I know of the MMR display and what you're describing, they basically do the same sort of thing EARLY ColorDMD did to detect what's on the screen and basically draw over it with their newly created assets. ColorDMD has evolved a ton since those days and has a lot more capabilities that they don't seem to have. They mentioned at some point that they left the text in the original resolution as a style choice. That's crap. They can't detect dynamic items on the screen, so it stays in the original resolution with a color box overlay.

Restart game and the game boots but nothing on the display….I loaded the Kiss firmware as well and that shows up if I go into the display menu so I pretty sure I am good on the firmware…any suggestions?

If you get no video signal at all, but the menu works - likely the DMD cable is not connected, or connected backwards.
