Quoted from PinballManiac40:

You realize it has been recently colorized?

Does anyone else think some of the colorizing on PotC is kind of...weird? It's the first one I've seen where I say "that's not right" on some of the sequences. Like the Kraken with green tentacles with blue highlights? Looks totally wrong. Same issue with the Kraken where it explodes - green/blue tentacles and bright pinky purple blood? No. The light blue lines would have been better in a darker green or black. As it is now, it looks weird in both those sequences. Also, the Skull with the headband is kind of a mess, especially on the one where its looking down a little.

Like I said, I've got a few ColorDMDs, and I lust after many more, but this is the first one where I wasn't totally onboard with the color choices.

Quoted from PinballManiac40:

Got color? Just installed my new LED ColorDMD. Can't say my scores will be improving with color.

The only ColorDMD I have a gripe with is PotC. They went crazy on the coloring choices. The Kracken green and bright blue is just too weird. There are other weird choices, too. An unusual miss, IMO, which is sad because easily 85% of it is solid.

Post #34 is where the colorist talks about the colors he choose.

Yeah, but green and bright blue Kraken is just nonsense. The Kraken plastics on the game are green and dark green, which would have been perfectly acceptable. There's creative license and then there's whatever you call a green and bright blue Kraken.

Like I said, PotC is the only Color DMD I've seen/owned that I have a problem with, mostly because it's so far out of bounds artistically. I'll definitely think twice about getting any others done by the same person.

All that said, Randy at colorDMD did tell me they would "take a look at making some adjustments In the future." and asked for a scan of the game plastics as a color guide. It couldn't hurt to email him if the Kraken coloring bugs you, too, to say you'd support a change to a more rational coloring scheme. His email is [email protected]. Maybe if he hears from enough customers, they'll "front burner" the change.

You should put this at the end of your original post on page one and update it there. It's super handy, but when I have to go looking for the latest one, it's a pain. If it was on page one, post one and just updated there, it would be very EASY to find!

Obviously they're illustrating the randomness of fate in battle as you rise to fortune. Clearly Wheel of Fortune.

#1396 7 years ago
Quoted from phillymadison:

I agree. My initial guess was and still is Royal Rumble. It wasn't until I image searched the picture and saw that it was from Game of Thrones.

If it is that's another low-sales-potential release. I know they're bound somewhat by their colorists, but you'd think they'd try to balance the releases more with higher potential sales targets.

#1399 7 years ago
Quoted from phillymadison:

I disagree the Royal Rumble community is bigger than most think. It's not TZ or anything but WWFRR is loved my their owners. Wrestlemania is a different story lol. But it's just my guess and my guess doesn't make it confirmed by any means. But when you think about it what is left that's a high selling title that's code is complete enough? TWD only comes to mind.

It's a low-dollar, low desirability pin. I don't think a large amount of people are going to drop $400 on it to get color. You have to think of the Color DMD as a percentage of machine value. The larger that percentage, the less likely the upgrade will be bought.

#1401 7 years ago
Quoted from GravitaR:

Every Low Dollar pin colored brings in more sales for ColorDMD, win - win.

At some point, though, opportunity cost comes into play.

#1403 7 years ago
Quoted from gac:

I will respectfully disagree. If someone owns the game and really likes it, they will spend the money on the colordmd. Just like they are willing to spend $350 on a Pinsound board for the same machine. As an example, I wouldn't consider Fish Tales much more valuable than Royal Rumble (I own both so I'm not biased) and I'm pretty sure colordmd sales for FT were very strong. I bought a colordmd for my FT and I would buy one for Royal Rumble too. Just my 2 cents.

I'm not saying SOME won't, just that on a (relatively) cheap machine, there's not a large crowd that will drop $400 for color. On the list of un-colorized pins in the OP, WWF RR would be around the mid-bottom for potential color DMD sales.

But none of that matters because this next one is for Wheel of Fortune!

#1406 7 years ago
Quoted from gac:

Or Wheel of Fortune. Never seen one in person.

That's the joke. Wheel of Fortune is probably Stern's most unfinished game that will never be completed. Sold like crap, has terrible resale value.

#1409 7 years ago
Quoted from Taxman:

There was not a lot of love when it came out. There was some company across the boarder in Canada that bout a crap load of WOF and WPT machines on close out. They were selling them for $2,500 NIB + shipping. I called and they quoted me $300 shipping but I still could not pull the trigger on buying either.

You made the right choice. I had trouble unloading a MINT one for $2200 a few years ago. The missing code is SO obvious it ruins the game (and the "voice acting" is terrible, too).

#1474 7 years ago
Quoted from TopMoose:

I've just updated the yet-to-be-colorized list on post 1 and have a question for the group:
Does Sega Harley Davidson have different animations than Stern Harley Davidson? I've never played either, but know that they spanned the transition when Sega became Stern. Aren't they basically the same game?

Same game, can use the same roms. Not sure if they tweaked it for 2nd and 3rd editions.

#1475 7 years ago
Quoted from epthegeek:

TWD rom will work in all existing ColorDMD displays.

Might want to have a look at Eric's bio, specifically "Wisconcin's" area.

#1484 7 years ago

Okay, what's next? Game of Thrones?

#1485 7 years ago
Quoted from epthegeek:

Safecracker would have to be LED only, due to space.

Quoted from Taxman:

Almost, but not quite. Addams + Playboy is indeed AP, meaning Austin Powers as any simpleton can deduce, HOWEVER, the trail does not end there. Austin Powers has a toilet prominently featured, so this is quite clearly leading us to the color DMD for Game of Thrones.

#1843 6 years ago

Well, now there can be no doubt.

As we know, Addams + Playboy is indeed AP, meaning Austin Powers as any simpleton can deduce. That led to the fact that Austin Powers has a toilet, or THRONE, prominently featured.

And now there's promotional photo of Rex Harrison ("Hairy - Son") standing next to a horse. This is quite clearly a reference to Jon Snow, with his famous "mane" of hair. The fact that Rex had a grandson named Sam just as Jon Snow's best friend is Sam seals the deal. HBO also does extensive promotional photos, just like this one. There can be no other conclusion since these baby level clues have given it all away. Game of Thrones is the next Color DMD.

1 week later
#1873 6 years ago

We know it's video, so TV or movie. And it's on a hero - like, say, Jon Snow. They've given it all away already. It can only be Game of Thrones.

#1893 6 years ago

We know it's video, so TV or movie. And it's on a hero - like, say, Jon Snow. Then we have a pic of this hero flying up a wall and into the air. Very Jon Snow/Wall. This is totally Game of Thrones.

#2040 6 years ago
Quoted from TopMoose:

Hooray and congrats, Rocky & Bullwinkle owners! This is going to be spectacular. Can't wait for the video preview!

Fingers crossed there are no weird color choices like the neon blue and green Kraken in Pirates he colored. Pirates is the only ColorDMD I thought missed the mark.

#2043 6 years ago
Quoted from Micky:

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this!

I actually sent them scans of NOS plastics of the Kraken to show how off base the color choices were when they said they'd look into it. All that Kraken coloring is just plain wrong and looks dumb (which is very uncharacteristic for ColorDMD output). Hopefully Rocky and Bullwinkle has nothing like that.

#2045 6 years ago
Quoted from J85M:

If someone is willing to look a POTC on their own time surely ColourDMD would give the okay? No reason a game can't have two coloured versions to choose from is there?

I don't think they'd want to split the release like that. It's not a good precedent. Pretty sure everyone would just want the "better-colored Kraken" version in the end anyway.

#2047 6 years ago
Quoted from Dmod:

It's being looked at. Vic, do you still own this game?

That's great to hear, with just a few tweaks it could be right up with the best of the COLORDMD releases. I don't have the machine I had last year anymore, but that's not to say I wouldn't get another at some point. Here's the screens I sent you about a year ago...

#2049 6 years ago
Quoted from PinballManiac40:

I still have my POTC. While I will agree, the Kraken looks better without the blue, the yellow text perfect to me.

The Kraken coloring is the only thing that is 100% without a doubt, indefensibly wrong. Everything else is taste, and I would have no problem if they only addressed the Kraken coloring. It would bring the release in line with all other ColorDMD games at a specific level of quality.

#2118 6 years ago
Quoted from Dmod:

On behalf of ColorDMD and the developer group, I'd like to thank everyone for the continued support. It's truly appreciated!
At any moment, ColorDMD has been supporting more than a dozen active projects with as many developers. Most of the popular titles are in progress. Some projects take time, or face delays, for technical or personal reasons.
Often, less popular titles have been easier to complete and move through development more quickly. We'll continue to help fund their development, provide support, and introduce titles (popular or not) as they reach completion.
In the end we hope to make everyone happy and provide a lasting contribution to the hobby!
Randy

Would not consider leaving a ColorDMD off a machine for which it is available. You guys have ruined "traditional" plasma displays for me.

#2483 6 years ago
Quoted from Sinestro:

It will be a significant milestone to close out the Bally/Williams titles. Something to be proud of.
That does leave an awful lot of Data East/Sega/Stern titles to keep them going for years.
I also have to think that they have ideas for something else down the road....a new revenue generator for existing customers....some kind of newer display that will make people want to upgrade. I'd be shocked if they haven't kicked some ideas around for how to stay in business after everything is colorized.

Going the AFMr way of offering jumbo LCD screens with re-drawn, higher-res graphics would be awesome.

#2486 6 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

I hope Jackbot is coming soon but it was such a low production game it might be last of the 8.

Lower than Champion Pub? Congo? World Poker Tour? I don't think the size of the run absolutely determines the order.

And Jackbot would be nice to have in color.

#2488 6 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

Well those HD displays would be a good way to go but then someone would have to completly redraw everything wouldn't they.

But it's one and done. An in a lot of cases, the elements on screen are moving and would only need to be drawn once, then moved for the next frame. Each frame would not need to be drawn from scratch.

I'm sure they could fetch a premium for high-res large format graphics (although that would require a new bezel, too) for older, popular B/W games.

#2490 6 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

2450 I think, how many for the other ones. I know the size of the run doesn't matter but there are so few JB's out there compared to those that the chances of owning a JB and coloring it are pretty slim.

Champion pub was just a few hundred over 1000, so probably 1/2 as much as Jackbot. Congo and WPT were less than JB.

#2492 6 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

I thought the HD screen was the same size as a regular dmd.

In the case of AFMr, the screen on the SE and LE is about 40% bigger (wider/taller) than a regular dmd AND has re-drawn hi-res graphics. Looks fantastic.

#2494 6 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

A year or two ago I thought someone showed a HD lcd screen that was the same size as a regular dmd. They said it had 4 or 8 times the rez or something like that.

I'm sure they exist, but after seeing the oversized AFMr color ones, that's all I want on all my DMDs!

#2500 6 years ago
Quoted from Sinestro:

ColorDMD would definitely have to license the ROMS for that, then re-draw the dots at a higher bit rate. Same as MMR.
This could be one of the options they are considering for the future.

For original themes, would they? A LOT of Bally/Williams art for playfields, backglasses, etc was never registered.

Any IM / SM / TF owners care to share how video clips look like on their LCD with Dots XL and scan mode? Would love to see the difference, as I'm trying to decide whether to go LCD or LED myself.

I see that Pharmacy link on google too but when I right click and "copy link address" it's a long convoluted address and not the simple "www.colordmd.com/support.html" address that it shows when you mouse over it.

That's google's referral address they use for tracking. It's that way for everything you click in google search.

If you click on "show more results from colordmd.com" and then find another on that list with a pharmacy heading, you can click the small green arrow on the right of the title to load the cached version of the page, which will show you the pharmacy page that was loading.

Looks like these pages on your site were affected:
support.html
support_firmware.html
faq.html
colorchange.html

I also didn't realize you had a colorDMD forum, but google indexed it.

EDIT: I have plenty of volunteers now! No more needed.

Anyone in the US buying a ColorDMD for one of the newer Sterns with the angled panel that requires the standoffs - if you want to test out some die cut foam spacers I'm working on that enclose the display borders, covering the gap from the spacers, PM me. I'll send a few of you a set for free if you document your install with pics and let me know how it works for you. I've always hated the electrical tape solution, and this is a very quick and clean install.

Wait? Until when exactly? The Stern of the Union today said "mid summer" for the start of the updates that include GB. Lots of GB owners have money ready today for color.

Given how many pins are ganged into the mid-summer (which is probably August) start of polish/finish updates, it could be the end of the year before GB or KISS has more code. I wouldn't hold my breath.

#3123 6 years ago
Quoted from epthegeek:

Not sure how much detail I should get into, but essentially an amount of compensation is offered up front, and the person offering to do the work can take it or leave it. It does vary by title, but sales after the fact do not affect it.

What do you think of the way AfMr is handling the colorization? They have quite a few ugly and abrupt palette swaps (most notably during Martian attack when something else happens - the Martians turn orange briefly). It seems like that could have been smoothed out, but I don't know what their system is. It's almost like instead of native color, they're doing what you're doing, but not quite as well, since when there are issues orange is what is seen briefly.

Edit:Here's just one example. When the score is static, it's colorized, but as soon as it begins scrolling up off the screen, it turns to solid green for that entire animation. There are examples like this all over the game in many of the animations that I don't think we would ever see in a ColorDMD release. Seems really sloppy.

#3125 6 years ago
Quoted from epthegeek:

When the video of MMr's color first came out, I was *SURE* they were leveraging the fact that they're using an emulator to inject NEW assets in place of the existing DMD assets. Turned out, that wasn't the case. I haven't seen AFMR in person, but from what I know of the MMR display and what you're describing, they basically do the same sort of thing EARLY ColorDMD did to detect what's on the screen and basically draw over it with their newly created assets. ColorDMD has evolved a ton since those days and has a lot more capabilities that they don't seem to have. They mentioned at some point that they left the text in the original resolution as a style choice. That's crap. They can't detect dynamic items on the screen, so it stays in the original resolution with a color box overlay.

It just seemed...less advanced than I was expecting. And some of the transitions are jarring with the orange popping in. It seems like having a table and just swapping one original thing for a high res frame in another buffer would be a much better way to go. In the era of hotdog/not hotdog, it's not like they can't recognize the shape of dynamic things in the low res buffer and remake that in a high-res buffer dynamically.

#3129 6 years ago
Quoted from Cheeks:

This is exactly what I was going to quote. Hilarious!
Better question, does ColorDMD's superiority to MMr/AFMr technology have to do with your use of Middle-Out technology?

It's all about d2f ratios to get smooth hot swaps.

Just an update. After a LOT of testing with a LOT of materials, we finally have the final material for these ColorDMD gaskets to finish the slanted speaker panel installations cleanly.

The final design is black, heat resistant, fire resistant (will self-extinguish even if you start it with a blowtorch), spongy, and uv resistant. I should have production samples in a week or so, and we should have all of them made in about a month (material in the thickness we need is a special order at the manufacturer). Maybe a little overkill, but I wanted it to do the job well and also be as safe as possible.

I was thinking more "A. Williams" as in, it's a williams game. Not sure if the Get Out is significant, but probably so. Good news is, the Williams list is very short now, so not many candidates to guess. Could be Slugfest, too, with Get Out kinda mapping to "Take me out to the ball game".

Hi guys I need some help. Just installed a colordmd in my Jackbot and now the trough optos don't work, it's a known issue. I want to power the dmd with a 2 amp 12v wall wart and need to know which of the 3 wires are +. - and ground and do I need a ground wire if using a wall wart? Thanks
[quoted image]

Mmmm...did you clean the optos (send and receiver) and check the power level supplied to them without a ColorDMD at all? Usually it's just that the power supply needs to be rebuilt because the opto power is right on the edge and the little bit the colordmd takes pushes it over the edge. Cleaning the optos and/or rebuilding the power supply if the power is on the low side should fix your problem and is preferable to introducing a wall wart.

Do you have other mods that draw power in the machine?

#3508 5 years ago
Quoted from MustangPaul:

The optos were cleaned a few months ago so that's not the problem, I have an OCD and a GI OCD on the game, nothing else is drawing power from the board. The game worked perfect before I put the colordmd on that's why I just put a wall wart on it. With all led in the game I should be drawing a lot less through the board.

Yeah, but did you check the power lead that the ColorDMD was going to use BEFORE the colorDMD was plugged into it? As those machines age, it's not uncommon for them to fade in the amount of actual power vs their rated power. And if that connector was right on the edge with just enough to drive the Optos, adding the ColorDMD to it would push it over the edge, making the optos not work. You should at least measure the power there, because if it's on the edge, the optos will fail in the future anyway as that eventually fails to deliver even the minimum power to drive them.

It's not really an issue. ColorDMD support for Metallica was released before Stern came out with the final game code. At this point, a revised Ghostbusters code would be tweaks to the rules, rather than new animations. And if there are new graphics, ColorDMD can always release an update.

I’m looking at my first colourdmd purchase, what’s the main reason the lcd seems to popular? From the last couple of posts alone everyone is buying lcd over led.
Could a few of you guys with plenty of colourdmds chime in and give me an idea which way to go, I’m not really interested in the hi res where it merges the dots together, I like my dots to look like dots. thanks in advance.

LED brightness is too intense and doesn't have the smoothing and DOTS XL mode of the LCD. It's just less flexible. However, because it is smaller, it will fit in machines that can't take the LCD. But if there's room, I will always choose the LCD for ColorDMD with the current choices.

#3660 5 years ago
Quoted from camcamaro1991:

I have both LED and LCD. The LED was originally on my Harley and... still is, LED seems to fit the older style pins, I swapped my LED to my STLE just to test, found it too harsh, and you can see the individual colors fire to make the LED create color, but when all the on screen animations move its very noticeable and dont care for it, just seems out of place with all the colors of ST, the LCD with DOT XL is perfect IMO. Only issue the gap which is easily fixed with stick on foam. I have no issue with brightness on my LCD.

The gaskets I just released for angled Stern panel colorDMD installs is WAY better than weatherstrip, functionally and cosmetically. Cuts down SUBSTANTIALLY on dust behind the plastic and on the LCD surface, too.

Quoted from jake35:

Dumb question but why are these so high in today's age? TVs are cheaper then ever before, 400 bucks for a tiny lcd seems pricey. I keep buying them of course (just picked up an LED for my Safe Cracker) but could get them for all of my pins if they weren't 400.

Labor intensive to color every frame and limited (relatively small) potential sales pool per machine. If they could sell even 5,000 or 10,000 of each one, the price per unit would probably be substantially lower. I'm reasonably certain that they have many titles where they don't break 1000, and probably some where 100 wasn't broken. The price keeps them moving forward in a relatively low-sales market niche.

#3892 5 years ago
Quoted from Scoot:

Can anyone explain as to why the lcd panels have to be larger in size? Also why can’t they be used in the larger Sega displays?
Not knocking the company, I have one on each of my pins and love them.

Assuming it's less expensive buying off-the-shelf rather than having custom LCD sizes created. With the number they sell, it makes no sense to spend more having custom sizes made for the LCDs (and may not be financially possible...)

You can make a low-voltage cable that plugs into the existing power supply in the backbox that will drive the low voltage display very easily. If you don't want to make one, Stern sells the cable. AP should look amazing in colour! Hugely underrated game once I have things sorted my end I would love to own another. Hell Stern just vault the damn thing!!

Given that it's on the lower end of resale value for a Stern (like 2k-ish) plus it needs a license renewal, I doubt they vault it.

That said, if the new Austin Powers really happens, maybe they'll reskin it...

#4134 4 years ago
Quoted from docquest:

When I was looking for one last year I would have loved to find one for 2k but they were much closer to 3k.
I dont think Stern could afford to vault this game it has so many mechs: spinning Austin Powers mech, mini me spinner mech, rotating time machine mech with magnet catch, fat bastard toilet, laser shooter with diverter magnet, rising dr evil bash toy. This game is packed with toys. With recent Stern's you get one or maybe two of those types of mechs in a game.

The bigger problem is they were using off-the shelf Austin Powers action figures on the PF and they're not available anymore at wholesale prices in quantity. The laser shooter was reused in Walking Dead, so it's still around. Other stuff is not that complicated or expensive (there's not row after row of drop targets like WPT). The main problem is the market doesn't care about that machine because it sucks. They'd never get $6k, let alone $7500 for new ones.

I sold a fully functional, good looking AP I rehabbed here on Pinside less than two years ago for $2k flat, and it was a slow mover. They're around at that price.

#4140 4 years ago
Quoted from hank527:

AP is not close to 2k. It's a 3k plus game.

Well, having SOLD ONE personally not that long ago right here on pinside (look it up) that did not move until it hit $2k, I would call that your opinion. And if I sold it at $2k, I got it for a lot less, so yeah, it's a $2k game.

Sure there are a lot of people trying to move it at $3k on pinside, but there's a lot of those with "not sold" and "decided to keep" unsuccessful sales at that price. Pinside recommends $2700, and that's even high.

It seems to be a very early machine.
EPROMS are still version 1.0 and all all the marking like serial tag, stickers on speakers and manual are all marked Data East. No mention of SEGA whatsoever even on the manual. Many manuals I have seen say SEGA on them.
The build date is September 1 1994.
What month did SEGA buy Data East?
[quoted image][quoted image]

Pretty interesting. Your machine confirms that the original Data East production start was actually probably October 1994. IPDB changed that to Sept 25, 1994, but your Sept 1st build date pretty much confirms Data East started making Maverick sometime in October 1994 and the original IPDB info was actually right.

You arent doing it for the relatively small amount of money you recieve. You are doing it because you love the game enough to put in the many months (sometimes years) of work needed to get it done.
I think the only reason KISS hasn't been done yet is because someone who has access to and loves the game enough to put in the time hasn't committed to doing it. It's as simple as that.

Quoted from Pickle:

This is a great option….foam gaskets deteriorate over time. I may get the actual gasket but get one printed too as it will probably never need replacing unless the plastic gets brittle…won’t happen in my lifetime most likely. Thanks for sharing!

The ColorDMD gaskets aren't regular foam, they are a flame-resistant neoprene blend. Neoprene degrades a LOT slower than regular rubber or foam, which is why neoprene is often used in gaskets and hoses where long-term durability is important. The oldest installed ColorDMD neoprene blend gasket from the early testing is over 4 years old now, and aside from the indentations from the screws, still looks and feels pliable and isn't shedding like urethane or other foams might by now.

However, the one thing that is sure kryptonite for neoprene is UV rays which DO cause neoprene to break down faster, so don't keep your pinball machine in the sun if you have a ColorDMD gasket in it.
