My understanding of ColorDMD is that it's like a color "filter". The same, unaltered graphics are coming from the CPU to the display, but the ColorDMD software just changes them from monotone to color.
If you change the text on the display, the ColorDMD won't know the difference and should just color it the same color it would have colored original text.
