It's a safety feature. All the high voltage stuff is disabled when the coin door is open in order to prevent accidental shocks.

Which game ? Some games have two switches. One kills high power when coin door opened, the other lets you know the coin door is open.
If you have the coin door open, a message that says coils and flashers disabled, but they work. You might be missing the switch, or it's broken.

Or someone may have modified it intentionally.
On some Gottlieb games, I've seen the interlock switch moved and mounted on the inside and to the left of the coin door. Maybe someone did something similar here?
