I was playing gofers and it seemed extremely difficult to make it onto the second playfield. I checked the resistance of the coil compared to a brand new coil and they were identical. The coil itself checked out, the sleeve wasn't binding and everything looked normal. I recently replaced everything else on the flipper except for the base. I replaced the coil with a brand new one and holy crap what a difference. it was nowhere near as sluggish and I could easily make it onto the second playfield.

I know most games you probably wouldn't notice, or maybe it wouldn't matter as much. I might adopt a new rule about age.

Not unless it got hot. Coil sleeves, OTOH, are a wear item.

Coils don't get weaker. They either work or they are shorted/broken. There's nothing in the middle.

Resoldering the solder on the wires to the new coil may have been the difference.

    LTG : )

Perhaps it was a cracked solder joint at a terminal of the coil.

EDIT: Darn it, LTG beat me by 10 seconds.

I'll take all your worn out old coils!

The only time an owner should consider replacing coils is when you cannot replace plastic coil sleeves inside them.

This is caused by repeated overheating and stress. This can sometimes indicate other problems that need to be checked.

The coil may not fail but a plunger as part of an assembly can get stuck in the forward or activated position.
Even coils windings or leads that were damaged can often be repaired.
