How do you tell when coil stops need to be replaced?

I got a new coil stop from PBR and it looks different from the old ones that are in my game.

The first one is a replacement from PBR and the second/third ones in the photo are from a 1953 Williams game. Was this a different design back then or are these coils damaged in some way?

I got the answer from an FB group that this was the original design for these coil stops and that they're fine. (I'd never seen what they look like new for this era game)
