Such great game. With GoT off my radar now I might jump back into Spidey! Maybe wait and see if VE is more than a rumour.
Quoted from Invader:I got one too
Love it!
I got one problem, when I hit dr. Ock with my left flipper, the ball bounces out (back to the front and sometimes behind over the plastic).
Do you have this problem as well and how did you fix it?
(Pictures please)image.jpg
I believe this is a common problem, mine is doing that as well. Pinbits makes some padded circles(link). I just got my game a couple months back and need to order these as well. I think they go in the front and back (doc oc) to cushion the ball and stop it from bouncing out(although I'm not positive) ?Has any here installed these?

Maybe someone else will chime in but I have those padded circles on order and will get back to you regarding how they will out if no one else answers your question.
As quick fix I placed a rubber chair leg protector sticker right under the scoop.
That helped a lot, but not 100%.
I placed it not deep enough inside the scoop, because I couldnt reach it.
Will do it again when I received my cliffy protector and have to remove the dr. Ock figure.

will you little lightshow invention incorporate this wonderful machine? If so...shut up and take my money!

Oh yeah. It is definitely happening. Don't tell anyone but I'm also invading the clear inserts and will demo a first go at colour changing inserts.
Just updated mine to 2.61 and notcied some new speech and a few other changes. Mine had been on route and probably never updated.
Wow loving SM a lot right now. Ordered up the powdered coated hardware, alternate plastics, target stickers and the building and train mods with the lighting kits. Definitely a players pin.
Last night was one last shot on the third venom away from my first Super Hero!!! Then of course drained immediately... I will be back for more. 20150910_200428.jpg
Love this game! When I brought this home, it was clean, but the cabinet area under the legs was bugging me. I put on the newer Stern style metal protectors, did a little touch up on the black cabinet and topped it off with colored Nylon leg bolt washers in red. No worries about nudging now.
Here some pics of the biglaw mods I picked up (Sandman and Doc Oc). Just replaced the sandman plastic as well. It wasn't cracked just a bit scuffed. Can't even tell its there(aint she perty), cleaned up plastic ramps when doing sandman added flipper fidelity 10" sub and 10 external subwoofer, new shaker, cliffy's to cover up shooter lane, red and blue plastic protectors and removable stealth like protector over doc oc magnet along with Back alley train and building.
Quoted from WesleyCowan:added flipper fidelity 10" sub
How good does that sound on this game?
I think it sounds great(with the back box speakers and volume control) and gives the game some depth. I found that I like to turn the volume control down that came with the back box speakers so that I get more base with higher volume without the mids and highs being too loud. Helps me get into the game, and I can go fairly high volume with no distortion and real deep chest punching base. Enough that is shakes things two floors up(dishes and cabinets in kitchen). With that, external sub and shaker, when you hit the pop bumpers or sand man you really feel it. My wife really doesn't appreciate it like I do
All that said, stock speakers and external polk 10" sub is the most effective way to get a similar feeling. I have a 12" external sub on two rock pins(ac/dc and metallica) that I have and honestly they are too much.
I finished installing some addressable LEDs into SM. There is a set under the backbox and along the apron, and are tied into the gameplay using a Pinduino. I think it came out pretty well (and the end game sequence is nice at 7:42).
If anyone wants the code: https://github.com/elyons/professor_pinball_pinduino_sketches/tree/master/SM-Apron-Back
new to the club,
anyone with a Led map ? and advices on lighting this one ?
i would go with warm white i think to keep orinal colors and not make it a space theme, but i have doubts about intensity, will frosted be enough, or anything else better or too blinding ? especially in GI cause i feel the game is a bit dark aroud the ramp entrances.
more spotlights?
Who has upgraded the red or orange DMD with a Color led DMD? And is at the investment worth? Can anybody upload some video of a color DMD on Spidy, especially the movie scenes, will they improve?
I got a ColorDMD in my spiderman, I think it's worth the improvement.
The trick is to set the contrast to 1 (default at 5), then the movie clips will become much better.
I also replaced all bulbs with LEDs, except a few for the "modes/villain circle", because these lights use "dimming" (it gets brighter everytime you defeat a villain).
Even with good LEDs, it stills flickers

A friend of mine has LEDs in his along with the LED OCD board. It's so pretty it brings a tear to my eyes. If I do not decide to update to the possible VE, I will be doing the same to mine as soon as finances allow. This is one of those games I would not LED without the OCD board...the fading and dimming effects are way too important on this one, both aesthetically and usefully.
Yeah, I'm thinking of getting a LED OCD board too
Here's a short clip with my ColorDMD, color set on white and contrast to 1, hires mode:

The video looks good. Maybe I should start saving. That OCD board looks interesting, I haven't updated the playfield with leds yet, what do you all think? Can you start with leds and later add the OCD board? Or will that not work with the dimming issues on the field?

You can add LEDs before you get OCD. I had them in for years and sold my SM before I had the chance to put OCD in. There are a few dimming effects that are compromised, but really not a deal breaker.

Looking at the video again, you have the display set to black and white, certainly a nice look, especially with the blacksuit multiball. Just wonder if you checked with other modes? Is there a all color mode, or a red mode?
Yes, you can choose whatever color you like.
I tried red and blue for a while, but I like white the most.
Any one occasionally get ball hang ups in the lower pop bumper area? I've looked to see if missing any rubber rings or anything else and game is clean and kept well waxed. Pitch is 6.5 degrees.

Happens to me also, just a little bump to get things going. Sometimes the ball hangs on the lane diverter or when you shoot Venom. I just think that the speed of the ball is sometimes to slow.
I have to tell you guys a funny one:
I hooked up a shaker and it wasn't working. I thought maybe it could be the code. I checked and it was 1.4 or something like that. With up to date code it works great and I love all of the "new" callouts! Lol

This is true...but in my SM I had quite a few ghosting inserts along with the blinky blinky LEDs where SM uses a lot of fading on/off. The LED OCD is a big improvement.

Same for me...ledocd is a must for this game...

Totally agree. Was just saying could start experimenting with the LEDs before getting OCD. I personally would not do spidey again without OCD.
Quoted from Sinbad:for those of us who do not know, what is OCD?
Board to enhance insert LEDs so that they have the nice fade qualities of incandescents, plus individual tweaking, plus flicker and ghosting removal.

I think I'm falling in love with this machine! I visited my friendly neighborhood arcade again today. I find myself returning to this machine over and over. I get some nice long plays and very satisfying action. I find the colors, lighting and layout very appealing.
I may add this to my wishlist!
Questions:
1. Does this game retain your interest over time. Are there enough missions/challenges to keep me coming back? I have a JP at home now and still very much enjoy the game and its challenges.
Even with my limited number of plays an understanding of the SM rules, I completed many missions - mostly accidentally - was this too easy? Or, is there a deeper storyline that will hold my interest?
2. Are there various flavors of this game (Pro, LE, etc.)? Any significant differences between them?
3. Has this game moved into the collector's realm, any new units to be had?
4. Any interesting quirks about this game or its construction I might want to know about??
Thanks!
Quoted from markp99:1. Does this game retain your interest over time. Are there enough missions/challenges to keep me coming back? I have a JP at home now and still very much enjoy the game and its challenges.
Yes. It is very unlikely that for a while you will complete more than two or three objectives in one game. In many machines it may seem like any individual mode might be easy to complete, but completing them all, and stacked properly, is the bigger objective. SM has a very attainable but still challenging mini wizard mode, Battle Royale, that in itself is a pretty satisfying goal. It is more interesting I think than say Destroy the ring.
Quoted from markp99:2. Are there various flavors of this game (Pro, LE, etc.)? Any significant differences between them?
There is an LE, Black SM, with chrome armour, different translite and cab decals. Identical playfield and gameplay. Pretty much universally regarded as the lowest add on value of any LE.
Quoted from markp99:3. Has this game moved into the collector's realm, any new units to be had?
I doubt there are any NIB around, although one or two stashed examples surfaced a while ago when rumours of the Vault edition popped up. That rumour still has legs by the way.
Quoted from markp99:4. Any interesting quirks about this game or its construction I might want to know about??
The Venom sound effect gets old. The spider sense shot is rumoured to have been designed to feed back to the shooter lane, and can sometimes seem like it is redundant other than it is required for some of the biggest payoffs in the game. The right sandman plastic anchor nut always comes loose. Doc Ock is one of the greatest shots in pinball.
Quoted from Concretehardt:Anyone own SM and ST? How do they compare and which do you prefer?
I have had both. SM gone but will be back. I have two different ways of looking at it. First is shot layout. Given the layouts are so similar, I think the warp ramp is a pickup over the venom ramp and the away team shot is what spider sense should have been. I think there is more to do with the ST layout so prefer that over SM. Although Doc Ock is still one of my favourite shots ever. There is also the kick back on ST which is a big pickup. And punchits of course. Lots to do. ST > SM on layout.
Then of course code and gameplay. This is hard. Codes are so different. SM seems more integrated and holistic. I think the major goals of the game are visible from the beginning, like you can see the light at the other end of the tunnel from the start. The problem with ST is that to really get the most out of the strategic approach to the game you have to be able to complete vertical 3inarows before you even get started. This keeps most casual players from ever really being able to see what's coming. And then you end up back at the criticism that the modes are too similar. SM modes feel different right from the get go. I think generally SM > ST on code and gameplay for "most" people. Eskaybee excluded
Quoted from Concretehardt:Anyone own SM and ST? How do they compare and which do you prefer?
That is a tough one to compare. Owning a SM and not the Star Trek I would say Spidey. But I played ST a lot and liked it too. The themes are of course different, both movies but different. The shots seems similar but there are differences. Doc Ock shot is very nice with the interactive figure and the magnet. The Sandman shot is also different with the target bank before it. The call outs in Spidey are great (if a deranged scientist asks you to come to a product demonstration....don't go!). I played a ST LE and the machine is awesome, the leds and laser are great, the backboard of the playfield is also nice with the nebula. The toys are good. A true LE. The Spider-man I have is a red one, as I like Spidey to be red and not black. As stated the Black was one of the first LE's from Stern and really not much different. So If you like Star trek I would say pick up an ST LE, if you like Spider-man, pick up a Spidey, that will be cheaper too I think. Both games will not disappoint you.
For the first time, I finally got to Super Hero yesterday AND finished it with the Spider Sense 250M shot. I drained shortly therafter so I really did not get to make good use of the 2X scoring. What a blast though.

What about using premium non-ghosting LEDs instead of the ocd board?
Quoted from Lethal_Inc:What about using premium non-ghosting LEDs instead of the ocd board?
You will still lose the fading/brightness effect telling you what villain levels you are on. And the cool pulsing effect from the villain spotlights.
Quoted from Jediturtle:You will still lose the fading/brightness effect telling you what villain levels you are on. And the cool pulsing effect from the villain spotlights.
This is exactly right, LED OCD is the only way to retain fading effects that are actually important in this game... You cannot purchase an LED bulb that fixes that at any price.
