I recently picked up a TZ that needs a lot of care. I got a tumbler/vibrating polisher to take care of my of the rusty, dull metal parts. There's a few parts with significant corrosion that I thought about using some spray on CLR (calcium-lime-rust cleaner) and polish off my hand. Posted a picture of a ramp switch that's pretty bad below. I wanted to make sure it wasn't too strong and that it won't damage parts. Any thoughts?

Try it. Won't make it any worse.

Wow, was that thing in a flood? I have a pin from '66 that doesn't have corrosion like that!

Now THAT is what I call corroded.

How does the rest of the machine look?

pictures?

That part should be cheap enough and available.
I'd like to know what CLR does to it, but if it really is available, I wouldn't spend the time/effort trying to restore it.

Removes similar crap from jones plugs nicely. 50% CLR and 50% water.

My understanding is it was stored upright in some guys basement. Cab has water damage on the back end.

Pretty much every metal part on the PF is rusty and/or dull and will need a good run in the tumbler. The switch above is the worst example of corrosion. Except for a couple switch errors, a shooting lane diverter issue, a couple DMD columns out, and a little general WPC reset silliness, it works great. Just needs a REALLY deep cleaning.

I use C-L-R all the time for cleaning all kinds of metal parts.

Can you use CLR in a ultasonic unit 50/50 mix

CLR works great! I just had a remote with leaking batteries in it, poped
The crappy batteries, submerged the remote in for (you can watch the old battery gunk bubble away like an alkaseltzer tablet) 15 mins. When it is dome wash in clean water, and then dry with alcohol. Tales rust off of screws, etc. It does warm against using it on aluminium for any length of time, but it works great!

Thanks for the input. Just wanted to make sure I don't make things worse when fixing this thing up.

Are there any common pinball parts that are aluminum? I guess I can always do the magnet test if in doubt...

Not really I just reminded you just in case you had battery damage on something (circuit board etc.) And you were dipping it in a container of CLR. I didn't want you to submerge any electrolytic caps in the stuff and ruin them. I have had tv remotes where the batteries have leaked, dipped the remote in a dish of CLR, and you can watch the corrosion bubble away. Same goes for rusty screws, hardware etc. Try it, it is cheap and easy to get, plus you can use it to clean the bathroom!

EM Chime Bars
Heat Sinks on Circuit Board Transistors

CLR works great to clean Jones Plugs and sockets in EM machines. Lamp sockets too!
