Hello all, I just looked at a Close Encounters digital machine and found several problems are preventing game play. When powered up the machine goes through it's self test and displays "outhole switch stuck closed" although there is no ball in the outhole and the switch contgcts are open. This is a aftermarket mpu made in France, I can't remember the name of the manufacturer. Also, when put into the coil test mode the outhole coil is not energized although the other coils and sounds are tested properly. In addition when powered up the tilt relay is energized preventing the playfield illumination from working. The normally closed door slam switch and tilt ball roll over switch are closed and the normally open tilt pendulum switch and playfield slam switch are both open. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate whatever help you may wish to offer. Thank you in advance.

Look in your manual and see how the switches you’re having problems with are related in the switch matrix.

Also consult the Pinwiki: https://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Gottlieb_System_1#Switches_Stuck_Closed

If you don’t have a manual or schematics Pinball Resource will have them.

Does it have the original or a replacement mpu in it? If original does it have any battery damage?

The original does not display any error messages at startup.

Quoted from Icarustwo:

the normally open tilt pendulum switch and playfield slam switch are both closed.

Can you adjust them to be open?

If the original mpu had battery damage (replaced for a reason right?) It.is possible the connectors were not recrimped. This can cause all sorts of switch issues

Yeah it sounds like you have a problem with the connectors. Repin J6 J5 on the MPU, the power supply and the interconnect harness at a minimum. Do ground mods on all original boards in the backbox.
