Actually, they're great, but the Stern Cliffy Knock-off is absolutely terrible. It's very thin and as you can see in the pic it broke off on the inside.

It was a PIA to install, plus noticed the guide had chipped off some of the artwork...put mylar down and shouldn't wear anymore as the ball doesn't go over that area. Don't know why Stern doesn't smooth out the bottom edges of these guides.

I'm never selling the game so I won't be losing any money on that little chip LOL.

That's because they are not real Cliffy Protectors!

#3 1 year ago

This is not a surprise....Stern, CGC (MB), and JJP (with DI) both have tried to make their own protectors, and they are horrible. Their all too cheap to actually purchase directly from Cliff whose product is far superior...

I don't think the problem is them being cheap, but cliffy can't keep up with the demand of supplying Stern, JJP and the community at the same time. I could be wrong, but it sure seems that way with people having to wait 2-3 months on orders.

Trust me its a cost issue....yes Cliff has some long lead times (although he's always been quick on my end), but he had a good plan to scale, but the manufacturers were too cheap so they went in another direction....

gotcha, i was out of pinball for a bit but seems like I remember talking to him and he did say something like this. I think JJP actually make their own in house. Why reinvent the wheel? Clif been doing this a long time and perfected it

I've never understood why manufacturers don't install these protectors at the factory, because some are a complete pain in the ass to install. Also the OP should change the title as its very misleading

#8 1 year ago

I vote for a change in Topic Title...Cliffys are awesome in every way... this title should read "Cliffy knockoffs" or Cliffy Wannabes".

#9 1 year ago

Please change the title of your post—it should read Cliffy knock-offs suck

I would agree. Cliffy is pretty sensitive about this stuff and rightfully so. I would change it to "hole protectors suck"

Stem playfield protectors (insert adjectives here)

Now that you have been educated, change the title already.

Done....I've had email Conversations with Cliff - Great guy and these other companies should have compensated him as it's his design, slightly modified.

I have Cliffy's on a SW (15 years old they are) and they still look Phenomenal. His end product is Great and no one can Compete!

#13 1 year ago

You need a Mantis style protector on that one anyway.

Cliffy is a awesome guy and he does a lot for us pinball idiots at the expense of his family time. I would never buy a Knock off from anyone else. If I use a Mantis I usually use a Cliffy as well.

Give me Cliffys or give me death!

I don't think cliffy could do 400 protectors a week to feed Stern. Plus I would feel bad for the guys poor hands

#17 1 year ago

He's the best and has always put up with me stopping by his house and picking up my protectors (on short notice)....I'd never buy protectors from anyone else

He had a plan to do so, but the manufacturers were too cheap to pay for his protectors...which isn't a surprise ....are you saying Stern pumps out 20K games a year?

at 100% production every week of the year they are capable of.. Yes

Not to be critical, but capacity is very different than actual builds....my bet is they build half that many, which is a lot more than anyone else....that being said Stern, and JJP are Waaaaayyyy too cheap to actually pay Cliff for quality protectors.....Cliff is better off doing what he's doing

Just last week it’s like both the factory scoop protectors on my GBprem started warping up on the sides!? So now when the ball comes around the left orbit it sometimes hits the raised up metal and it sends the ball sdtm! The right scoop has a similar problem and can alter the ball path. I know Cliffys are the absolute best, but I’ve got a bunch of company coming into town & in the meantime is there a way to get these cheap thin factory protectors to lay back down? I need to do something while I wait for Cliffys to come in and find the time to install them...

pretty sure this was the last new stern game cliffy made scoop protectors for. It's to bad, I told him I would still buy them and replace the stern ones.
The stern ones don't seem to hold up very well, especially in a commercial environment.

Cliffy seems like a great guy. Always upfront about the wait and always responds to emails in a timely manner. A great asset to the pinball community. And he gives away free t shirts!

I need a new Cliffy shirt. I have gotten too fat for my old one.
