This is the second machine I've put a set of Cliffy's Shooter Lane Protectors into, and I'm still stumped as to the point of the flat right side protector. If I install it the way I think I'm supposed to, it barely peeks out from under the black rail, and provides zero protection.

Here it is, installed in a machine that's had some wear already. You can see that it doesn't even touch the area that's been beaten down by the balls as they come out of the trough.

Am I doing it wrong? Or do I have a fundamental misunderstanding of what this protector is supposed to actually do?

You're supposed to line it up with the lip of the shooter lane, not the wood rail.

Have you contacted Cliffy about this?

I already have mail to Cliffy about it, but I figured I'd post here.

    Quoted from NightTrain:

I would love to do that, but then the hole in the protector doesn't line up over the hole in the playfield that the long wood screw for the rail goes into. If I just let the protector "float" there, sandwiched between the rail and the playfield, without any way of securing it, then it ends up moving around under that rail, no matter how tightly I secure the rail to the playfield.

What title games are you installing them on?

This is on a GoT Pro, but my last experience with this was on a Star Trek Premium. Neither of them are known for being a unique situation.

Its intended to not just protect but also balance the ball so it stays center in front of the shooter. Otherwise, with only the main shooter eject in place and nothing under the rail, the ball will be canted to the rail side. This is a universal fit which means its going to fit some games differently than others. Not all will have a screw where the bypass hole is placed, for example.

As for securing it there is the 3M tape dot on the upper end and the bypass hole in the other. But mainly it is held in place by the clamping force of the rail. Much detail is in the install guide on my page here in the bottom section of the guide http://passionforpinball.com/twd/TWDProtectorGuide.html

So it's not necessarily the case that I will be using the screw hole in the protector for anything? Huh. OK. I didn't have much luck keeping the protector in place with Star Trek without using the screw hole, but I'll give it a shot with GoT Pro and report back after some plays.

You may want to make the link to that guide a bit more visible on your main page. I had no idea it even existed.

Just installed in my GOTLE - literally 5 minutes ago. Fit is perfect. Should fit your GOT Pro well as well. Let me know if you need any help.

Correct and I agree, I do need to get my pages in order. Two full time jobs, only so much time in a day I'm afraid. All you ever have to do is ask though, Paul

You may need to clamp the rails together first then tighten the screws.

    This.

You have to essentially loosen the screws all the way and then push the rail down while tightening.

Per my install guide on the TWD and Metallica pages you really should use quik clamps or C clamps and yes absolutely the screws need to be pulled all the way out of the rail. Thats how stern assembles the rails at the factory. If the playfield screw holes were drilled for clearance this wouldnt be an issue but they are threaded the same as the rail
