Quoted from Dr_Dude:I have a copy (actually two) of Greg Walker's reproduction Fathom playfield, and am thinking of getting it clearcoated before installation. The guy I was planning to use for the clearcoat was worried about the composition of the ink on the playfield since it might interact with the clearcoat. The playfield was originally at least lightly clearcoated to my knowledge, so maybe I should just leave it as is? Any advice from folk?
If what you have is the first repro pf (ever?) that Greg and Kevin did, I bought one too.
Here's what you need to know...
1- The blue and green inserts are too light in color. Back in the pre-led days someone made darker blue/green stickers to put on underneath. If you use color specific leds that should fix it.
2- The clearcoat is too thin and you do need to clearcoat them. I likely had it done within the first year I bought it and there was no interaction, and it was years later before I had it swapped out.
3- AND MOST IMPORTANT, they made the pf on THINNER WOOD than the original and did not tell anyone, so the original game screws are too long and will have to be replaced. Sadly a few found this out the hard way when screws popped through the top of the pf.
