I agree about good clearcoating, but it might not be an absolute necessity to completely strip a playfield if a person is very good at masking and using airbrushes, smaller for touchups, larger for clearcoatings, is likely doable.
I know it'd take a long time with many coats and sanding sessions to finally get to 1500 grit smoothness for waxing, if surfaces under playfield items are good it could save some disassembly-reassembly tedium or nightmares.
not saying stripping isnt the better or preferred way to go, some of us just wouldnt be really capable of complete takedown and rebuild, with so many wires and gadgets it could be overwhelming.. where they could maybe more easily learn how to handle an airbrush.
