Basically he's talking about rubbing the dirt in deeper. Swirls/etc are dirt sitting in the cracks in the finish. Anything that helps clog that up or pushes it deeper.. makes it more difficult.

As long as the novus residual is removed its more about the consequence of working it in deeper...
