I would personally only use magic erasers if I was planning on clear coating it after.

Wax after magic eraser with alcohol will be ok. Just don't over do it with the magic eraser or you will remove paint. To clean the magic eraser residue, I use naphtha on a rag and then wax.

There are other methods and opinions on this subject.. Magic eraser can be your best friend or worst enemy if you scrub too hard.

To clarify, is use naphtha to remove the magic eraser residue. I didn't get time to edit prior to your reply.

Use alcohol on the magic eraser and naphtha to wipe of any residue left by the alcohol/magic eraser. The black will come off

Apply light to medium pressure with the Magic Eraser, your not scouring 25 years of rust off of a chrome pinball leg. Be careful around the inserts, that black ink on any raised parts will disappear in a jiffy.

I think the Novus you used over that black schmutz kind of sealed it into the paint, making it very difficult to remove. Getting black off of yellow on a playfield is very tough to begin with. Bad move using Novus before cleaning first. I'd keep cleaning with 92% alcohol and a somewhat abrasive rag or gauze pads until you start getting a dullness to the paint, then carefully use ME and alcohol. Proceed with caution though.

So THATS why I have such a hard time removing ball swirls. On a new game I usually hit it with novus before the eraser and then wonder why the ball swirls take hours to get out at times.

Basically he's talking about rubbing the dirt in deeper. Swirls/etc are dirt sitting in the cracks in the finish. Anything that helps clog that up or pushes it deeper.. makes it more difficult.

As long as the novus residual is removed its more about the consequence of working it in deeper...

Novus contains DE; that is diatomaceous earth. It's an extremely fine abrasive, and polishing a dirty playfield with it will mingle the dirt with the paint on a microscopic level. Once you've done this, it's nearly impossible to separate the dirt particles from the paint, unless you carefully work your way down to a level of paint that is dirt free.
