Hi I just started on a new project. Sega Harley Davidson.

The playfield and everything has black rubber stuck onto everything and ground into the Playfield. Almost to the point of completely obscuring the graphics in places.

So far, I have been using rubbing alcohol with a paper towel and elbow grease. It has been working but it is slow going and tedious.

Is there a better or easier way to remove all of this gunk?

    Thank You in advance.

Sounds more like coil dust that has built up. Novus 2 should get through it if it is.

    You could also try CP100.

And dont use paper towel. Use microfiber cloths. You can find them cheap

Also you dont want rubbing alcohol its watered down.
Use 99% isopropyl alcohol or novus 2 or naptha

CP100 will take the residue off of everything. It's especially effective at cleaning rubber rings. Novus 2 is my preference for the playfield and plastics, though. Use sparingly and buff to a shine with a cloth. Once clean, I typically throw down a coat of carnuba paste wax (Mother's) for protection.

Awesome thank you for the advice. I’ll be getting some cp100 99% alcohol and microfiber wipes.

I have the carnuba paste wax for a good wax and buff after cleaning.

You don't need to use the alcohol if your going with CP100

For how bad it is, I would prefer to use a cheaper fluid to remove the bulk of the gunk.

The crud is very thick to the point of almost blacking out the playfield graphics, white and yellow are practically black where I haven’t cleaned.

And it’s rubber too, the stuff is chunky, in addition to tons of the fine coil powder. The rubbers are badly cracked and disintegrating. Vegas heat does a number on rubber.

    Quoted from mollyspub:

CP100 is 99% Naphtha and 0.6% paint stripper.

A gallon of Naphtha is only $14, so you can probably save a lot of cash and just refill your CP100 bottle with Naphtha.

    Holy crap. Pictures?

    #11 5 years ago

Okay, unless the previous owner was using black rubber balls at 200 degrees instead of pinballs, I doubt it is "black rubber residue."

I'd love to have seen pics.

I’ll see if I can post a pic or two of what’s left that I haven’t gotten to yet

I bleach the black rubber off of plastic parts, but it will rapidly increase the rate of oxidation on metal parts.

The photos don’t do it justice. It shows the chunks. The coil dust shown is not the worst spot I’ve cleaned the worst already before posting.

That's not too bad. Even just Novus 2 should take that off with a little buffing. I would avoid using rubbing alcohol until trying that, or CP100 first.

Ops used double sided tape to hold the rubber on the flipper, you can see the outline on your parts before bleaching.

Thank you for the Naptha tip. It works like a charm.
