Quoted from Wiggy:Newbie question. Why is Naphtha a better choice than isopropyl alcohol?
Alcohol can react with some coatings.

To cut down on the noise, filter to just vid's posts (click on the person silhouette between the post number and the time of the post): https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/cleaning-and-waxing-pinball-machines-vids-guide/page/1?tu=vid1900 That'll help pull out the more useful posts.

Quoted from BallyWilliams:Wow a cleaning thread! This is exactly what I need and a big thanks to vid1900 who has been super helpful with his awesome guides.
I have a rarish sample machine : http://www.hassellcastle.com/cvsample.htm
As there was less than 3k produced and apparently less than that kicking about now and considerably less sample models , i wish to be careful.
The sample models used "decals" on the playfield and later painted them in production. My playfield though dirty is in very good condition and has original decals all over it.
As I'm learning how to clean I wish to be careful with these decals and possible lifting or damage.
Currently I was planning on using white spirit on a microfiber for a basic clean and then novus 2 on white paper towel and then a rag for wax.
Does anyone see any issues with this and is it suitable for these decals ?
Thanks
I wouldn't use paper towel. Aside from anything else it leaves lint everywhere and vid1900 says not to:
Quoted from vid1900:Use Novus2 - with a soft cloth (not paper towel), polish out any scratches. Polish out the ball trails in the inlanes. Keep the cloth rotated to clean sections, and keep it moist with the Novus2.
The post that came from is probably quite relevant: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/cleaning-and-waxing-pinball-machines-vids-guide/page/3#post-2660463
I wax any game I own, clearcoated or otherwise. I love the way the ball moves when it's got so little friction against the playfield. Less fiction would mean less wear too, right?
I wouldn't use an ammonia based glass cleaner on the glass either. Novus 1 works well. I'd use novus 1 on on the plastics too.
I wouldn't use the wax in your picture as it is a cleaner wax which has abrasives in it. I believe the Mothers product you want looks like this: https://www.amazon.com/Mothers-05550-California-Brazilian-Carnauba/dp/B0002U2V1O
Quoted from Da-Shaker:This is new to me. What's wrong with using Windex on the glass?
Possibly just paranoia, but ammonia on the playfield or plastics isn't good so I don't like having it near my machines at all when there's other products that seem to do as good a job.
Quoted from Bugs6797:I’m a complete noob to pinball, and I just made my first purchase yesterday....a 1984 Sirmo New Orleans bingo pinball machine. It has a ton of issues, when I plugged it in, it gave me error codes. So, naturally, I Windexed the dirt off the glass, but that didn’t help when I plugged it back in....lol. Anyway, on that model (manufactured in the 1980’s in Belgium), what to use to clean/wax the play-field? I was thinking Novus 1, but I’m open to any ideas.
If it was that filthy, I'd be thinking of completely stripping it to clean it properly. I'd filter this thread down to only vid1900 's posts, read the first page or 2 of those, and then make a plan.

Quoted from Chalkey:What vacuum attachment are you using for inlanes?
This was linked by vid1900 earlier: https://www.amazon.com/Micro-Vacuum-Attachment-Kit-Piece/dp/B000BSJCLY/ref=sr_1_2
Quoted from ignat:Thanks for clarification - I was concerned it was a different chemical. So I guess 'Shellite' is fine for use on my Pinball machines then?
I use shellite and have not had issues other than wanting to be somewhere with ventilation. It's primary use that I know of is as fuel for stoves but it also works as fuel in zippos, etc.
