Is it possible to effectively clean and wax an entire play field and ramps without tearing it down completely, or am I wasting my time?

I wax my games like this

Its possible. Whether you want to or not is the question. I dont bother for areas that I cant see or if they are virtually impossible to reach. Cant see a reason to do so.

Wear.

It's better to wear out the wax than wear off the surface.

Unattended areas ultimately wear ball tracks thru the paint and into the wood.

Seeing that playfield replacement way down the road is difficult to impossible, it's best to do a little extra attention to hidden areas when possible.

This preventative approach makes games last almost forever.

haha I guess I just dont care that much. Far too much of a hassle to be removing ramps and upper playfields.

I use an assortment of thin tools to reach most places.

Plastic rods, thin wooden dowels wrapped with microfiber etc.

It doesnt take much more time.
It's just a matter of thinking about it.

All of this without a big teardown.

Also vacuum off the wiring harness and cabinet interior after a wax job. Takes 5 mins.

Removes a lot of black dust.

And the game plays better.

hahaha, funny enough, now you have me thinking more about this. I do love my machines and I do care for them.

Do you really think that a machine for HUO would wear down past the clearcoat in those areas?

If you don't clean an area the ball travels on, the ball will pick up dirt from that area and dirty the playfield much quicker. I also remove as little as possible using small tools wrapped in microfiber to reach difficult areas the ball travels. I also try to get the difficult areas outside of where the ball travels, but admittedly use less effort for that.

Ahhh, but if the rest of the machine is clean, how does dirt get to that one spot? haha.

My real issue is my WOZ machines and reaching under the two upper playfields.

I’m currently installing 2.0 light kit on my WOZ, and since I need to remove the upper playfields I will take that opportunity to clean and wax extensively under.

The steps to do so are well documented and it’s not that hard to do, while gaining experience doing it surely helps for future maintenance.

So I plan to stick to a once a year full clean and wax.

Black dust is actually pumped into the game each time a solenoid fires.

The plungers act like pistons.
The dust is the coil stop wearing and getting beat up.

Black dust is finely ground metal fillings. Left unchecked it grinds into the clearcoat and wax.

You will get ball trails and grooves - even in HUO games.
