Can anyone give me an idea what is involved with fixing this? Is this a major/common problem? Considering getting the game but don't know what I'd be getting into. Thanks for any advice.

I just took my claw apart a couple days ago. Seems like a pretty basic device.
There a small board with the left and right ops
A small motor board
and of course the motor itself
I was having an intermittent problem..touching up some solder joints seemed to fix it.
There's a claw test in the menu...i's start there and see the ops for the claw and elevator are playing along
Claw problems are pretty common with neglected DMs. As suggested try moving the claw in test mode first. Most problems are probably related to the optical switches below the motor or the motor driver board underneath the playfield. Make sure the motor itself runs properly as this is the most difficult part to replace. If it doesn’t move in test mode, take it out, connect some batteries to it and make sure it turns cleanly.
