Hi, I have a problem with my CV. The upper right diverter seems to be on hold more than I think it should be. Maybe it's just the rules and my knowledgeable friends here can explain! When playing normally, should the acrobat loop (diverter open) be always available until the "acrobats ready" light is on? From then, the ball should do the full orbit with the diverter activated? My diverter seems to close early on allowing the orbit shot.

In test mode, the diverter power test works fine, but won't release unless I open the door to cut voltage.
In test mode, diverter hold works fine to hold it, again wont let go unless I open the door.
The hold power seems to be there all the time and will hold the diverter closed if I manually move it across at the start of the game.

I wonder if my hold transistor is fried? That coil is getting very warm an I think it's the hold winding always active? A quick reminder of how to test the transistor would be appreciated (it's the Q80 from what I can see on the manual).

Thanks

Youtube for short how to videos.

Or set your meter on diode and compare to other identical transistors.

Doesn’t testing a power transistor require one to pull it out of the board?

Not to see if it's shorted.

I found testing to be "variable" in the board, so I took Q86 (damn small writing) out and it seemed dodgy. I replaced it and all good now. What makes transistors turn bad anyway? Thanks for the help again LGL!

Hanging around on street corners. Smoking cigarettes. Frequenting pool rooms or playing pinball. Seen in the company of loose women. Things like that.

Could be a lot of reasons. Diode failed and back surge got it. Old age. New age. We may never know on this one.

Maybe it would be a good idea to replace the diode too.

I wouldn't. It would have blown the new transistor immediately when powered up if it was bad.

Phew! Glad it didn't!

I'll hide the cigarettes!
