Quoted from RyanStl:I hear Chinchillas are very inteliegent animals and it's cruel to keep one as a pet. They escape and kill themselves as they run straight for the cat.
They are surprisingly smart. We don't have to worry about that since we don't have a cat!
Quoted from pinzrfun:I had a guinea pig as a kid, a couple gerbils, but now that I'm older i'd have trouble keeping an animal in a cage it's entire life simply for me to look at it once in a while.
We give ours a lot of supervised out of cage time and interact with them on a daily basis.
They really enjoy sitting on people's shoulders like a parrot.
When I was first doing research about them, I was really surprised at how long they live. I've heard of some living for almost 30 years!
Chinchillas are one of the few animals that I'm not allergic to, so that was a big reason why we got them.
I love coming home, seeing them standard attention to say hello when we come in. We've got a pet camera and they do know the sound of our cars pulling into the driveway. It's really hilarious. My wife has watched it when we've gotten home sometimes, and both the chinchillas will perk up ready to say hello.
Quoted from seenev:I went to the pet store about a week ago to buy a chinchilla for my kids. The pet store staff went on and on about how they aren't very friendly or tame and suggested a guinea pig instead. It was a weird downsell because the guinea pigs are much cheaper.
I wouldn't say that they are all unfriendly. It depends. They definitely each have distinct personalities and it has taken some work to get them social. One is definitely more social than the other. They can be moody sometimes and really sweet other times.
They are more fragile than guinea pigs and other rodents and have have much stricter dietary needs.
Ours have a wooden maze they like love to play in. None of the pieces are permanently, so it can be set up differently each time.

Quoted from Cmartin1235:If you are considering one for a pet, know that they live a really long time. Something like 20 years. Also, they eat (and poop) a lot.
They do poop a lot. Fortunately it is dry and doesn't smell. We vacuum and clean up after every play time. This was about 10 minutes into playtime tonight.

I need to make some more sections for them.
