    Hello everyone!
Decided to start my first restoration. Found a Chicago coin rifle gallery on Craigslist, rough shape was an understatement! Covered in dust, rust and grime, had certainly seen some water as well!
Well I picked it up cheap, knowing it was missing the gun assembly.
Information on this game is scant, parts it shares with pinballs are thankfully sort of easy to find, and others have taken me 4 months to track down!
Thanks some very awesome and helpful pinsiders I was able to get some hard to find parts, and even located the gun assembly! I’ll be posting here over the next few days all the progress with lots of pictures! Long ways to go! For starters, here is the way I got the game as well as a picture of what one looks like.

So got to start somewhere so I decided to first tackle he timer unit board. The timer unit specifically 1st. The unit was rusted solid. Literally couldn’t move any part of it. So I removed it. Disassembled and slacked the parts in evapo rust for a day. Did a surprisingly great job! Reassembled and used a little 3 in 1 oil in places. This was my first parts challenge. The spring on the timer gear a CDI 130-905 was not only rusted but had broken into 3 pieces. Thankfully a few helpful pinsiders helped me track down a few replacements (I needed a few for further rebuilding as well) I also had one bad coil, the timer reset coil, it was burnt and shorted causing the fuse to blow every time the main game reset coil was activated. Plus the plunger was rusted to the insides of the coil. Pictures of the timer board before and after. I took these pictures while waiting on the new coil to arrive. It’s been replaced now

Pictures show up in all sorts of odd ordering sorry. You get the idea and can match them up. I used wood filler to repair the board, repainted the back black and the front a bright white. Cleaned all the wiring harnesses as well.

    #5 3 years ago

Next I moved onto to the entire upper assembly with the back glass, mirror, etc.
this is a simple piece overall. It’s large but other than the backlighting to the artwork nothing mechanical. However it was in need of the most repair overall. The lights did not work. Tear down was difficult and had a lot of pieces. Lots of rusted parts. And the arms that it connects to the main cabinet with where broken. As well the trees graphics that are there to hide the player from seeing the wooden arms were destroyed. So some wood working and graphics reproducing were in order as well as some electrical. Again more evapo rust.

After all that decided to tackle the target assemblies. Mechanically not much, just needed to clean the rusted parts. The targets and graphics were mostly just dirty. Gently cleaned them one by one with Q-tips and water and I do mean a lot of them! 4 of the bears were anywhere from 10% to 50% flaked off. As what was likely a burnt coil in the past caused some scorching to part of the bears foreground. Hand touched these up using fluorescent paints and a black marker. Turned out well. The ducks foreground backer board was broken and impeding the reset bar from getting the ducks reset as well. Cut a new board and fixed this.

After 4 months searching I finally located the gun assembly in California. Had to cut a new top to mount the gun to. Still work to do here. Got to restore the gun stock after repairing a few cracks, and then the barrel. The top will get some metal, edging, but I’ll do that after I get the cabinet repainted as the final steps. Right now getting the game working and all the parts is priority.

After the gun arrival, I spent some time on getting the game functional. First was the reset blowing fuses which was a bad coil on the timer and shit count reset coils h-27-1500. Replaced and fuse issue solved. The row of ducks and the row or bullseyes targets wouldn’t reset. Bad coils, 2 j-27-1700 coil replacement ta later solved that issue. Then sound board, the contacts were too far apart on the gun co tell relay quick fix and the shots were not coming out the speaker. Next no recoil. Ended up placing an alligator clip on the coil lugs one side at a time discovered there wasn’t a good connection so a quick resolder resolved that and the recoil is back. Then moved into the shot count unit. Broken screw and a bad coil as well as some missing trace on the disc that I repaired with solder. And got it all functional turning on the game over lights reset properly, as well as illuminating the correct shot numbers on the board.
From here moved to the coin mechanism and it was a rats nest of broken solders and loose wires. One wire at a time on the schematic and we got it to work and properly reset the game.
Last piece here was stylus. Targets would not fall down. Jumpered from stylus point wire to each target and still nothing. Moved the jumper from the stylus point to where that wire comes out of the main board into the gun jack. Sure enough it worked, so somewhere that stylus wire is broken and I’ll be replacing that very soon!
Sorry long post more to come! Waiting on the stylus disc assembly to arrive now and I should have it 100% complete and be able to ply a full game very shortly after. Once that’s all sorted out I can don final cleaning and tightening. And begin the gun and cabinet work. It’s been a long road and I’ve reached out to over 100 people on here and across other forums and called repair facilities coast to coast searching for parts. Very fulfilling and not a game your gonna see much. Can’t wait to bring it inside to the game room!

Graphics look really neat once cleaned and repaired! I changed the shot light to a red bulb just a personal preference to me makes it look more like a gun shot.

    Thanks!
It’s not been easy and this is my first restoration.
So funny thing I created those trees by hand. I traced the tattered remains of the old ones onto a sheet of black poster board. Then I bought fluorescent craft paints at Michaels $2 each roughly. And one color at a time with the originals as reference just painted them. In the end I embellished with more paint as a personal choice I wanted them to “pop” a little more. I used an exact-o knife to cut them out. Reattached to the brackets and reinstalled. Time consuming allowing each color to dry before the next.

    Quoted from dudah:

Wow very nice work! You make it look so easy!
For the reproduce tree scenery, what did you print it on and what fluorescent paint did you use?

While I am at a standstill awaiting parts to arrive. I decided to start in the gun stock restoration, well and the cracks in the stock were really bugging me lol! So I filled the cracks with some minwax wood filler, let it cure for 24 hours and started sanding away. Partial progress pics

Just to update here, the cracks appear to have been because the gun broke at some point in history, it was glued back together but obviously not very well. That’s why I used wood filler here instead of wood glue. Structurally it was strong with no flexing in the cracked areas. You can see the repaired areas currently but running your fingers across them you do not feel them anymore. Get some stain and a several clear coats on them and they will look great.

Got a coat of gun stock stain applied letting it dry. Probably do 1-2 more coats, then likely 4 coats of clear coat

Found the insert cards after months of searching. They finally arrived today. just put one in the game. Have all 11 now. 1 each for 18 seconds, 25, 30, 35 and 40 “coin returned” or “extended play” and one that’s says “for amusement only”

Also today I got a used (very) shot count disc. I have one that works but it’s had someone along the way make a huge mound of solder to fix a broken or burned trace, and is also missing a trace for the common wire that runs the shots counting on the back board. This one was burned as well but over all in better shape. I got right to work and solder filled repaired the burned trace then filed it to make it flat and smooth. I think it turned out good.

For reference here is the shot count disc in my game that I just replaced the “new” one with. Mounded solder and it’s connecting 2 rings that are not suppossed to be connected. If you zoom in at the top the 4th pin from right going left that is suppossed to have a trace going to the 1st and longest outer ring.
After replacing with my repaired one. I tested and the shot count lights began working for the first time!
However a new issue popped up (don’t they always in these game though?)
Light 6 is not working. Likely need to replace the socket or do the add solder to tighten it up procedure, and then when it switches from 8 to 9 the fuse for the lights blows. So I’ll be trouble shooting and locating the cause of that in the days ahead.
Feeling good with all this progress!
I’ll clean up and rebuild the traces on the shot count disc I took out to have a spare or in case someone else is crazy like me and chooses this game and needs it.

Well I did the best I could on the old one. I’ll file the solder lump down a bit tomorrow. It has bits and pieces of wires mixed in it and it was just too difficult to get it any smaller. So I smoothed it, fixed the trace at the top pin 4th one in from the right and undid the extra trace from the largest outside ring where it was touching the huge blob and it shouldn’t be.

Still working on the rifle stock. Allowing for drying time between clear coats should be done Saturday might wait till Sunday or longer to fully reassemble humidity is high here. But after 2 coats it’s really looking good!

Spent some time trouble shooting the shot count disc issue. I am thinking somewhere along the line someone may have disassembled the wiper arm assembly and possibly didn’t reassemble it correctly. I’ll need a picture to verify but finding anyone with this game has been impossible. Any leads please send to me.
    Here is my issue.
Reset the game, it takes 5 clicks on the stepper to put shot 1 on the board. Cycles through till shot 10. But I can’t get 11-20 to light. And the game over comes on after the 20th click but if all lights were working game over is at the 15th shot due to the first 5 not registering. So the wipers beginning position is 5 clicks from where it seems it should be. The arm it attaches to, has two possible positions and I tried them both ways. Still not resolved. Once I hit extended play relay after a few more clicks I’ll get 11,12,13,24,15 to illuminate but not 16-20 because the click gear hits its metal stopping point. So my only logical conclusion seems to be someone has to have disassembled and reassembled the wiper fingers wrong? Or is there something I am overlooking? I’ve mapped out all the traces on the disc. And again to me where fingers should be for each sequence is not what I am seeing. Gonna think on it some more, research some more before deciding to go forward and trying to reassemble those wiper fingers.

    #28 3 years ago

This is the reset starting position. That top finger (closest to the “R”) is 5 clicks away from the “1” shot position. The finger immediately to the left closest to the “L” is in the right position for that trace which when it stops making contact (20 shots later) will de energize the game relay resulting in game over being illuminated.

Maybe I am wrong but I feel like that smallest wiper finger should begin at it’s trace to begin with or the opposite it should be one click off it’s final trace as that finger is linked to 0 shots so it can go either way. On or off the trace I just don’t know yet.

Then the other 2 fingers spaced 10 clicks apart like the longest two would be the 11-20 shot illuminates.

Input if you have some or a lead about who has this game be much appreciated!

So I have never done this before. I have an EM pinball I got 8 years ago. Complete but not functional. Slowly i researched and tried things out and got it to were you could play a 1 player game but it was far from “working properly” on that but none of the other players worked and it had sticky score reels etc. over 8 years I got it to be 100% functional and really enjoy it. Since it was finally done I picked up this. The pinball was mechanicals and cleaning with minimal replacements pop bumpers etc. now I am refinishing the rifle and tonight I started planning for the cabinet restoration. It’ll take some wood filler and sanding, that’s a duh and a given and then I’ll do a base layer bright white. That’s the easy part. I’ve never done graphics etc. so tonight I traced a few parts and cut it out of poster board to give it a shot. Keep in mind this is just a very quick “let’s see how this works” and will not be the final product. I literally traced cut out and spray painted on a piece of board all in 20 minutes. Just a proof of concept I guess. I may do the acetate paper but I still got time to figure that out. Overall I think I’m ready for the cabinet work in the future.

Well traced everything out, got my stencil plans all set. Started the cabinet work officially. Starting on the side in the worst condition. I had no choice but to strip the laminate off this side, it was peeling really badly and also already had very large sections that were ripped off and damaged. Got it all stripped off, scraped and sanded then used wood filler in a lot of places. Will do a final sanding once that dries.
I am going to do a base coat of white. On the bottom I will do the blues first, then I’ll do the reds. Up top I’ll do the reds first then the blues. The rest of the cabinet is in good enough shape to allow me to just sand it before painting.

Gun reassembly. Sanded and refinished stock, barrel and entire top assembly. I think it turned out awesome! I may down the road add the black tip to the gun stock but I personally love the look without it so for now this is where I finishing it. I added a few of how I got it for reference.

    #50 3 years ago

I figured that was a possibility. The manufacturer plate doesn’t have a serial
Number in the serial number plate spot. I haven’t seen a serial number anywhere in the machine. Information for this game is very scarce. Can’t even find a serial number anywhere to tell if it’s in the right order or not. It’s on the back and so it’s unseen and it’s there for historical purposes whether it’s the game or an operators number.

    Quoted from undrdog:

Some routers will stamp a number on their machines. So, if your number doesn’t match with the manufacturer’s number scheme, it could be the vendor’s number.

Only thing I am worried about or don’t have a plan for. The access door graphics. I have them traced but those are hard ones to make stencils of that will be neat. The target and the logo. I reached out to some stencil makers to see if they can recreate it for me with precision cutting so they look good waiting to hear back. If nothing else I’ll buy a target stencil online it just won’t be the same. I will still give cresting a stencil a shot see how it turns out.

So nothing picture worthy, but I remembered I had 2 coils that were needing to be replaced (melted) because the reset relay for the targets was too close and therefore held on and melted the contacts together. So I filed the contacts to clean up the roughness from the melt down, readjusted. Then went ahead and replaced the 2 coils. Tested everything’s working as it should. So now until I find more parts and get some more in I am as far as I can go.

Went a bought some aluminum trim to edge out the rifle mounting board. Got that installed today. Also in testing trouble shot a target issue and discovered the wire from the stylus to the Jones connector had no continuity, so I threaded a new wire into the wire harness pulled out the bad and soldered it all up, continuity tested to be perfect after replacement! So still able to make progress while I await parts and find others.

So just down to a few items.
1.) Stenciling the front access door graphics. - have a fellow pinsider helping me with this.
2.) finding and installing a gun knocker assembly
3.) installing the shot board - located awaiting confirmation it’s the correct one before purchasing
4.) trouble shooting 2 circuitry issues
5.) small handful of parts I need to locate and install.

    #62 3 years ago

Located the gun knocker assembly hope to get it installed this weekend. Also located a bunch of the small handful of parts and will be looking to install those as well this weekend.

Also got the original parts catalog and just as I suspected the shot count disc feelers are in the wrong positions so I am gonna look at rebuilding that tomorrow. Should resolve that issue!

Gun knocker assembly installed. I had to order the correct coil from marcos, so once it arrives I’ll be all set.
Also installed a rifle board locking hinge
As well as 1of2 alignment brackets for closing the top board and 1of2 of the pin brackets used to actually lock down the top board.
Still searching for 1 more of each bracket. But a fellow pinsider and I are going to take a shot at fabricating these on Saturday. Thanks @undrdog!
Hoping by the end of the weekend to have those brackets done installed, have the stylus board installed, the remaining access door graphics completed, and be knocking down some targets!
Just be down to fine tuning and figuring out these 2 circuitry issues after Sunday!

Added a pair cig holders just to round out its original look. Finally got that shot board mounted and adjusted game fires accurately, it’s truly fun to play! So what’s left?
Needs some leaf adjustments as the shots at times skip say from 1-3 etc...just a minor bend should fix that.
The timer is not functioning by itself. It operates with each shot but is not doing its own thing automatically. Again I know everything works so it’s going to be in switch adjustments.
    After those adjustments it’s 100%
I played a game got all 20 shots and it even correctly reset and went into extended play as the reward!

Here, I shot this video of the first full game play. Just uploaded it! Thanks for your feedback!

    Quoted from fanuminski:

hope you can post a video (or youtube) of the game in action! great dedication on
your part to restore this. thanks for sharing!

Yep absolutely stunned myself! Fully expected it to implode!

    Quoted from undrdog:

Watch his stunned amazement when he gets his extra time ! So satisfying when you finally get something to work right.

    Just a little update.
Just down to trouble shooting 2 small issues.
1.) the shot count when operated manually at the coil, it works perfect. Operating it manually at the stepper works perfect. Operating it at the trigger to the gun and 50% of the time it works perfect the rest of the time it’ll skip shots or not count several shots. I assume it’s in the switches so I’ll take some time to adjust and mess around this weekend
2.) the timer doesn’t work. Now mechanically it’s fine, the coils all test in range on multi meter. Wires are all continuity tested and good. I have limited it to the capacitor on the shot count board, a new one was ordered and when it arrives I’ll install and check it out.

Well installed that new capacitor no deal, so the last remaining component is the resistor next to the capacitor. Ordered it and hopefully that’s the issue

undrdog lol. Or maybe “timer broke, if you don’t like that don’t play it.” Bring your quarters mike I’ll let you play it.

    Lol! That’s funny!

Quoted from edward472:Dude...making him coin up.... Gotta make your money back somehow my wife is always trying to get me to take away the jar of change near my games. She says eventually the games will pay for themselves

Got the new resistor in today be installing it tonight, hopefully that resolves the timer issue!

    #92 2 years ago

Welp was not the resistor so I have 3 more capacitors I can check now.

Found a capacitor that seems to indicate it pulses the gun control relay. It has to be my last hope. There are 2 boards in this game with a total of 4 capacitors and 1 resistor. 1 board has the resistor and the capacitor, I’ve replaced the capacitor and the lone resistor. I just ordered 2-4 of the other capacitors on the board with 3. The 5th (3rd) one relates to the coin return feature, it operates as expected so for now I am gonna replace these 2 when they arrive and see what happens.

Finally resolved the shot count issue! Turns out the plunger trace stop screw was too far out adjusted that and now after over 20 consecutive e games played not one shot count was skipped! So it’s literally just down to the timer issue. Hopefully get that resolved soon!
Side note, the recoil coil has died, R.I.P. ordered a replacement. Minor issue. Will have that resolved in a few days.

So installed the new recoil coil and we are back in business! Been playing the hell out of it. No shot issues at all! Shoots very accurately too! Have a few more capacitors coming to complete replacements on all of them in the game. Hopefully get that timer resolved soon! That’s all that’s left now!
