Just completed full resto of a Chicago Coin 1976 Coney Island rifle machine. Machine required repaint and had a number of operational issues. My usual approach on restos is to get a machine operating as it should and then move to the cosmetics. But first castors installed.

The coin door had been hacked and the anti cheat switch deactivated. The hack was removed, anti cheat switch re-activated and the coin door wired per original specs. The coin door was disassembled, cleaned and repainted with new CC decal.

    canon21032021 004 (resized).JPGcanon21032021 004 (resized).JPG

Steppers and relays on the back door and the score/timer board were serviced. A back up 8 track player has been obtained and a replacement tape ordered from flippers.com.

    canon21032021 008 (resized).JPGcanon21032021 008 (resized).JPG

Various target assemblies were serviced and playfields cleaned and, where necessary, cardboard degradation reinforced with celluloid backing material.

    canon21032021 009 (resized).JPGcanon21032021 009 (resized).JPG

A number of bulbs within the jumping target assembly had been replaced with 6v bulbs which shone ‘very bright’ (12v system) and were replaced.

    canon11032021 009 (resized).JPGcanon11032021 009 (resized).JPG

The bakelite aiming board and stylus were serviced and wires re-routed and secured. The recoil mechanism had been disconnected and was tested and corrected.

    canon20032021 012 (resized).JPGcanon20032021 012 (resized).JPG

The rifle stock and barrel were disassembled and resurfaced. A Remington 22 rear aiming target was added.

    canon21032021 006 (resized).JPGcanon21032021 006 (resized).JPG

The gun sound speaker had been replaced with a smaller speaker which operated fine but had been poorly installed. An adaptor plate was fabricated and installed.

The backglass contained significant flaking within the lit areas. As an interim measure, pending repro bg from bgresto, the bg was sealed and touched up and lifted sections repositioned using gladwrap.

Cabinet stencils were fabricated from 6mm mdf after first taking a paper trace, transferring the trace to the mdf and using a jigsaw for cut outs. Colour registration was confirmed prior to preparing the cabinet for paint removal. On these mdf stencils I now position vertical struts on both edges on both sides to ensure colour registration accuracy.

    canon11032021 004 (resized).JPGcanon11032021 004 (resized).JPG

The cabinet was paint stripped, repaired, primed, finish coated, speckled then white and blue graphics applied.

To assist synchronising the rifle aim and stylus rivet connection an alignment tool was fabricated.

These are the final pics of machine. Power cord will shortly be replaced where I will tap the 240v connection.

Mate that looks sick , great job .
    Is it for sale ?

Thanks for your kind comment. Not for sale currently but at some point I will need to create space. My P/Owners list will set out any for sale: http://www.pinballowners.com/integ194

    Quoted from pinhead52:

any suggestions on sourcing a 8 track player for this game?

From my research it seems the most common approach is to access an automotive 8 track player Ken. These come up fairly regularly on ebay. The one I purchased was in box and never used-I think price was $US65. The wiring colours replicate my machine.

    Quoted from pinhead52:

I see quite a number on ebay... how does it do track select to play the 1 of 4 tracks for hitting something?

On my machine it is simply connected to the original wiring so it does what the original does. I have been trying, without success, to get a pic of the wiring into the player 8 on another Coney Island just to confirm that my wiring connections are original but I do believe so.

The 8 track player was not working as it should on this machine which also included a hack. Reversed the hack and installed a replacement 8 track player which was slightly smaller than the unit replaced. The player connector was a different config on the new player so appropriately spliced to existing wires. Now working fine which includes carnival theme during game play and a message at game end.

Final task was to fabricate a coin box based on original specs provided by colleagues. First a cardboard template for the box.

    canon10042021 006 (resized).JPGcanon10042021 006 (resized).JPG

Then the box after cutout, bending and spot weld.

Cardboard template for the lid confirming coin drop ok.

    canon10042021 008 (resized).JPGcanon10042021 008 (resized).JPG

All finished and ok. These take a bit of time when done as a one off.

This is incredible. I did this EXACT restoration on the same machine about 2-3 years ago. Our methods were practically identical.
    Nice work.

Thanks-would love to see some pics of your machine.

I must say I am absolutely thrilled with this machine. If there is a better rifle game than Coney Island it would have to be good!
